I was really put back yesterday when I went out to pick up my finished car and there it sat untouched from the last time I saw it. When asked about the delay I was told that he needed new hood hinges to line everything up right before he could paint. Not having capability of outside comunication I guess, I will have to order them Now and wait another week. I was bummed but thats the way this thing goes alot of the time.
I hate depending on outside shops to do anything. They promise the moon and stars to get you in, but once there the car just sits and collects dust, most times. It starts out all friendly, and you are patient, but after awhile you have to go in and kick some butt, and then you worry about the kind of job you are getting after that.
I've even told the guy I am a generous tipper if the job is done right and in a timely fashion, and they still blow it.
Last time I used a body shop for paint was on my Son's Cal Look bug. I told the guy we had a lot of money in the car and were going to be very fussy. When we went to pick it up the car was as if a 5 year old had painted it, and he was proud of the job he had done. :eek: I made him repaint the entire car, and luckily he got it right the 2nd time. I guess he didn't want to have to do it again.
Problem is, this scenario happens all too often.

Trying to come up with some different ideas for valve covers on my pickup. I picked up a couple sets of the Ford cast aluminum valve covers off eBay (cheap) and started smoothing on them. Looking for some ideas on how to finish them..... Just smoothed and polished or maybe some color on them? The truck, inside, outside, and upholstery will be Ford Bright Red and Ford Performance white. The pulleys, radiator, fan shroud, and a few other goodies under the hood are polished aluminum. The engine block is red.... Any kewl ideas for the covers? I've enclosed a couple pics, they have some really neat ridges and lines, if I was artistic I could figure out what to do with them. But I'm not, so I'm looking for opinions. Thanks!!!
i've allways been a fan of a mix. Color coded to match block with some aluminum showing . I'm a sight type also but if i had them i would try coloring the top and leaving the bottom aluminum to make a break between block and top color. Maybe about midway down the side they have some good break line's built in ?? . Now if i did it and it didn't look good off the color world go .
Even just coloring the two ledges leaving the top and bottom aluminum.

Yup, the engine block is red, so maybe a bit of red inbetween the lines on the side, and polished aluminum on top and bottom. Had another suggestion to get the Ford script engraved on the top, and fill the engraving in with red, too. Then clear over everything. How do you think that might look?
I like that idea too Dave, those are going to look sweet.
He is painting my car 2 tone with 2 stripes seperating the colors so the hood has to be where it's going to be so he can properly line up the 2 colors.
yeah, they should be kewl. Too bad about all the time I'll have in them. Doubt many people would pay $250.00 for a pair of short Ford Valve Covers.... Oh well, never said it all had to make sense and be profitable.......:LOL: :LOL:
Dave great thought to top off the covers . That would be just the right amount of red on the very top . I can see this all finished up in my mind now. Can you do a mock up with some red vynle tape ? Those ledges are a distinct look on the covers. $250 huh im keeping that in mind.
Ok started the IFS today . Somewhere i read they did them in about 6 hour's wheeww i have 5 in just this . I guess not being that knowledge based i was taking my time. Still have alot of prep welding in nuts to mount things back and boxing before i can even tack it in . When i found the center of original suspension i triple measured it . Still will just tack and assemble and slip fenders back on to see wheel in center of opening. One thing i'm still waiting on spindles. Glad my son on the left and on the right my daughter's b/f was helping. Of course they where watching a football game also (LOL) . The crossmember was a nice snug fit to frame rails.
Got my boards and grill shell painted only got 1 coat clear on i think they look great already.pics included.
Stang, looks like you have everything braced up really well, should be a nice install. Oh yeah, when I said 6 hours, did I mention it's a crew of 3 of us that have done many of them together????:LOL: :LOL:

6 hours, ya right I have heard that stuff before too! Looking Great Bluestang, it's nice to have a couple young bubba's around to help! Is the 5% tilt for bumpsteer already built into thier crossmember?

Who Me nice reflection allready dont see much sanding and buffing happening to that nice finish .

Yep Brick all geometry is done just install and align . Which works great for me .Bumpsteer was a fear not having experience is this type of build. So hopefully the advertisement was on the money . Third or fourth hand is allways handy. Plus family makes it more fun .
Also the camera is much lighter then that suspension .
Guy told me for painting a car in a garage . Just hang up a half dozen or so garbage bags . There static is like a magnet for dust particles in the air . Seen his work very clean .

Dave. I am so impressed by your sacrafice that I will refrain from any Ford slander for a day in your honor! The pain you must have endured for the cause! Truely you are a god send to the hobby! Got to get the young guys involved, they are missing out.
I am on paint shop hold now for don't know how long, waiting for himges my car is now on the back burner. I think I am going to go pick her up and send her to the window man for rear side glass and see if I can find someone to shoot the paint on it.
Took my Plymouth to a dinky local swap meet yesterday. A buddy of mine was helping put it on, and asked me to bring it to fill up some unsold floorspace. I had a blast, sold some stuff, bought some stuff, and enjoyed watching people check out my ride. One old guy in his eighties told a friend of mine that the '56 was his "favorite of the whole damned bunch" of cars on the floor. That made my day!
ok tacked in and mocked . I really like the way it sits great wheel center , I must have did it right . It's not fully welded thats where im heading now . Allmost 11 hours to this stage .

Animal, I really like that old Plymouth!!!!! Sure would love to find one in that good of shape some day!!! Talk about a candidate for one of them overpriced size huge old style Hemi's!!!! (Blown, of course!!!)
I went over to the guy's house with the '70 Chev pickup today and did some more work. Convinced him to put some of the same color on the engine, trans and some rear end pieces that will be on the truck. Have no idea what the color is, friend of mine mixed it up special... Anyway, here's a couple shots of it. Oh yeah, the guy that owns it is definitely hooked for life on hot rodding now!!!!!!!!! Then, while we were stopped for dinner, his uncle stopped over and gave us another '70 Chevy pickup. No engine and tranny, but definitely either a builder or a lot of spare parts....

you know, i spent all summer working on my galaxie. my goal was to have it in the school parking lot on the first day. its pretty much finished as far as the drive train goes, but i miss those days i spent dreaming about driving it to car shows.....i need another project
Tyler I know what you mean by the goal's . The Mustang was involved in a move and the house took my time for about 6 yrs , It's near completion but im ispiration burned out . This new project has me locked and hoping its driving by summer . The new inspiration may have me working both as i go along .

The car is really looking good, Tyler!!! As for the wheels, I'd have to say a set of the factory Magnum wheels, or some brand new Cragar SS wheels!! Think either would look great on the car and be good for "the look" you have with it....
i only paid $800 for it and rebuilt the motor...so i would say i got a pretty good deal aha
