I think I know what you mean by flanging it; but, how do you do it?
Thanks,

That would be cool if it was the last time. :( Got a long way to go I'm afeared.  :LOL:Quote:

With a tool called a panel flanger. Mine is pneumatic, but they make manual ones too. On the portion of the remaining panel, it forms a recess. The new panel overlaps this. It's easy to keep the panel in place, either with Cleco's or with self-tapping screws. Seeing as how I don't describe things worth a flip, I took some pics.Quote:

Pic one. That's my panel flanfer. Pretend the peice with the flange stamped in it is your existing quarter panel, the other peice is your replacement panel.
This picture is how the two panels fit together.
and this one shows what a nice fit it makes, and how much easier it is to weld, grind, and finish then a butt weld. Put a few tacks along the back side. The front you should weld solid, tack it along it's length every inch or so, then weld a little bit at a time, or stitch if you welder has that setting. Weld slowly, allowing the panel to cool. Too big a hurry and everything warps!!!
Well, if you have a really good imagination, here's a shot of the Ranchero. Dual stacked headlights are switched over to single, the big ugly chunk of tin on top of the hood will eventually be a cowl induction scoop, and the hood is now hinged to open forward. Still a loooooong way to go!!!!
and here's one of the Merc's, going to block it one more time, then jam it and start putting things back together. This is the one on the Crown Vic frame with the 302 and C-4.
Oh hell....I see what your talking about....I was thinking about it backwards, where the flanged part would be sticking out, and essentially creating a new line, not in and creating a weldable seem....DUH!!! Sometimes, I get hung up on the stupidist damn things....
Thanks for the pix. I r uh slow lerner sum tymz...
Oh well, we all suffer from that occasionally. Hope the pics got yer head straight!!!!!
Got some stuff called Ultra Shine delivered today. It's a 2 part system. Once over with the cleaner.
Then a second coat of sealer. Came out almost like chrome. Guy says the stuff holds up for 4 months on semi's. Said I should be good if I apply it once a season. This stuff is great, if it lasts as long as he says. The sealer/polish contains a resin that's supose to seal the surface. It was a wax on wax off process, harrdly any rubbing @ all.
 HEY WAIT A SECOND!!!!
:HMMM: Why are the serial numbers on those different????
You tryin' to sell us sumthin' Z???.....

J/K. It does look pretty good. Let us know how it lasts.
Dutch
Man that stuff shines up nice, Pro, anxious to see how it holds up!! Sure would be nice on wheels if it lasts like the dude said.
Where did you get it at, Pro>????? Do you have a link or a phone number or something????
Hey, whadya know? I just happened to look at the page count on this thread and noticed that it is edging ever closer to the magic 80. Last thread, that I know of, that made it that far got closed.....thankfully. I don't think we'll have to worry about this one going that way though.
bump
I am actually building a truck now
havent been to the dyno or track yet
sorry the pics are dark
one of the mill
this has been a 6 year project
Truck LQQKs great 40. What's in it?
All the aluminum rear end parts are shinned up and ready for assembly. Few steel parts to prep & paint, Few parts to get in the mail. Hope to have it together in a week or so.
this is a little better.
Missed the pic. of the engine. LQQKs great too.
What the CID,/trans/Rear end?
350cube / th400 / 31spline ford9" M/T 33X19.5
after I go to the track it will get a manual tranny
had to put the radiator out back
been there done that on the rad. deal, the black 454 blown el comina i had, had the rad. in the bed. only dif. is i had one in the front also. you think that rad. gonna cool that motor?
so far so good
the griffin is effecient for its size
although the warmest day I've driven it on was 80
the combined 10feet of 2" stainless tubing under the truck
also dissipates heat not to mention the extra volume of water
the fan is rated at 3000CFM and i suspect its crucial
good thing I live close to work
Good looking 40, got to have a few hours in that one!!!
Now that stuff looks awesome ProZ, it was worth what ever you paid for it. Beautiful, whats it called again?
Nice work on the ranchero Dave, starting to look like a bad boy now. The hood is going to look cool.
I see a truck now rusted 40 instead of just a star! HeHe! Very well done with alot of motor alright. a great looking engine with what, Twin Turbo's? Damn!! I hope that you can cure the heating problems, it sucks to have to fight overheating. I don't know if I have cured mine yet or not, I haven't gotten to drive it very much because of the weather.
The rear end housing and bell ends weren't cheap, but the rest of the parts i made from plate aluminum on the CNC so they didn't cost much other than allot a time. Should be a functioning/assembled rear end by next weekend, I hope.Quote:

the parts look awesome, you wouldn;t need chrome with aluminum looked like that all the time.
Personally I have been fighting the timing on my new engine. If I time it where it belongs so it runs good, it won't crank over. If I retard it so it will start, it won't run. I have replaced the vacum advance and no difference. I am going to take the distributor in today and have the curve tested, we'll see if that works. I haven't been able to get it to runn good enough to break it in!
New distributor because of a bad bearing, new coil just because and it's still doing the same thing. I will have a day ahead of me playing with the timing I can see that now.
Once the rear end is installed ....... it's a roller>>>:D :D
Very sweet Pro70, it's "Rolling" along nicely huh!:D You have really come a long way this winter, you must be getting really excited to see her sitting on her own wheels! Very cool!
Yup Brick. As of about an hour ago.......after 3 years to the month........IT'S A ROLLER !!!!!!!!

Pro70z28, absolutely magnificent workmanship. What a gorgeous car. You must be on a first name basis with your tubing notcher by now !!!
What are your plans for the car? I see big Mickey types on the rear, which makes me think street. Are you planning some strip time too?
Really really nice. And, isn't it cool when you can push them out into the daylight for the first time?
Don
thanks Firechicken. Still got to install the rear brakes but I ran short of time.
Don:
It started out as a mild street car. It's been getting a little less street and a little more strip as the build is progressing. I think I'll get a pair of slicks on bead-locks for when I get serious.
Better weld on some brackets for wheelie bars, I think you gonna need um!!!:) :)
Don
Brackets are already there.:D :D
