Got a little more done on the English wheel yesterday. A guy I talked to on the phone that builds E-Wheels said if I build one it needs to be very sturdy & needs a lot of adjustment built in. So, this is what I came up with for the top anvil. It's a little more complicated than it needs to be, but I had a couple old air actuated hydraulic cylinders laying around that I wanted to make use of. I got them for free probably about 30 years ago and finally decided it's time to use what's left of them. I found one of the cylinder housings was corroded through but the ram was still good & that's what I needed for the anvil adjuster. Too bad they are shot, the cylinders are all aluminum (except for the ram).
Anyway here's the deal. I cut a couple sleeves out of aluminum round stock for the rams.

Cut a couple supports for the sleeves on the CNC

Parts pressed together. I didn't want the anvil assembly to rely on threads cut in aluminum, so I made this little pocket to hold a nut for the 3/4" ready rod that will be the adjusting screw.

Turning part of the ready rod down to 5/8'' to make an adjuster out of it.

Here's where it's at so far. I have those cylinder rams cut to length. Turned a hub for the adjusting wheel that will be mounted on top. There will be a plate where the brass bushings are to tie the assembly together. Got a wheel and mounting flanges to make yet and the top anvil part of the project will be done.

I found some aluminum at the salvage yard that just said "I want to be an English wheel". I am building it to fit in the receiver I have on the wall for the other attachments. So, aluminum will make it a bunch lighter when I attach it to the wall to use. Old guys have to consider these things ya' know. :whacked:
Very impressive pro70z28. Nice lookin too!
Thanks Steve.*I didn't have much to do this afternoon so I drew up & cut out the adjuster wheel for the E-Wheel.
Cut the hand grips out of 1/2" PVC.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...28/EWheel1.jpg
1/4" aluminum for the wheel itself.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...28/Ewheel2.jpg
Used fusor auto body panel adhesive to glue it all together.

As Norm Abram says ''I'll let it cook in the clamps overnight''.

Nice work Pro . Hows that comaro going? That thing was killer when I seen it a while back.
Gonna be a very nice piece of shop equipment--better keep the hand cleaner and towels nearby, be a shame if anyone got the wheel dirty!!!! As always, some excellent work!
Mostly stayed in and watched the Dover race, but I did make a few pieces for the dash and footwell on the 'maro. With the engine setback, things are a bit tight for a 3 pedal car, but it should work out just fine!!! The hoop under the dash will support the dash and also the rear engine plate. The posterboard template will be some 22 ga. steel, just for cosmetics. Decided the stock dash looked like poo-poo, going to build and aluminum dash for the car. Oh yeah, the stock grey seat in the picture is one of the pair I advertised on here last week as for sale--they're dirty, but structurally they are still very good seats.
The side panels on the inside of the pickup were brushed aluminum---then my "color advisor" informed me they didn't match anything on the truck and I should paint them white--so I did and she is (as always) right!!!!:LOL::LOL: Just have to bolt the tank in and hook up the filler tube, supply line, and sender wiring. There's also another panel that covers the tank....
Oh yeah, put an ad on Racing Junk for the truck, ad #1665025 if you'd know of anyone interested in the truck. Sure would like to sell it and throw some $$$$ at the Ranchero!!!!!!
Well it has been a while and I see you guys are still moving along . This is where the A sits today mostly done with no paint . Sure hope Ebay likes it because I did order all the sheet metal for the 37 Coupe last Friday.

looks great Bobby!! Sure shouldn't be anybody wonder about the condition of the body!!!
Dave you would think not but i bet a couple ask if the body has any rust LOL.
The bed of the truck sure does look great .
Cool to see everybody's projects coming along. Got a little more done tonight.
Cutting out the backing plate. The slots are to index the backing plate to the adjuster assembly.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ckingplate.jpg
Cutting out the top cap that connects the ready rod to the rams.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...mcapEwheel.jpg
Top cap completed. The brass thrust bushings are pressed in from the top and bottom. They come about .020 short of touching each other. This allows grease to be pumped in from the grease fitting.

Assembly is pretty close to done. This shows the index slots that align the backing plate to the assembly.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ntassembly.jpg
I also added a grease fitting to each ram cylinder just to keep everything workin' smooth.

Got a little more done last night. Parts for the top anvil.

Trying to finish mine by feb. Will be tearing it down in a couple of weeks for paint and body work. Still have some roof work before I am ready for that though.:D
Pro53 looking at yours in this state makes me think .
Here is a slide show of it going to market been on a few forums a few days now tomorrow Ebay is next . If it don't sell it will be under my porch for a long time .
http://rides.webshots.com/slideshow/574945887vobMZa
Yea thats a nice body, mine was ruff :D What dont ya finish it? I have a murray 4 door and a 26 touring, a hondo drag boat, omega jet boat, what a 53 ford pickup I am almost done with.:D Hold on to it untill you get around to it. You no that old stuff is not gettin any cheaper. The pickup is a second rebuild. I just put it on the back burner untill the model a is done. The pick is when I put it on the trailer to move.
whoa nice truck , Yeah they are tough to find clean but i really like the bigger cars . may get another mid 30's Ford later . Maybe even a Truck .
I cant stand it. Lately I just pop in and breeze through everyone's progress.....and quickly run to the shop. LOL's.
Pro.... you know I'm terribly jealous. The things I could do with the right tools. Great work as always. Wish I had taken up as a machinist by trade sometimes.
Great progress everyone.
Mine....still on the back burner until Dustin and I finish his Elky. Oh bugger!!!! Well...the Elky is pretty much bare metal now. Almost finished with the last of the welding and grinding. I've never been much of "chrome guy". So when Dustin asked me to help him shave the car I gave him the thumbs up. I fear we're nearly at the end of body work till things warm up. I know we'll have several nice weekends still but I know Mr. Cold is around the corner.
I concidered heating the shop with a kerosene heater but was a little worried about it putting a film of oil in the air? Dont want problems during the paint process. Can anyone give me advice about the kerosene heaters?
And a link to Dustin's video. The sound isnt the best.....taken from a camera phone. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...deoid=63086053
And added a couple pictures.
Dave G
Sorry about the pics guys. It stacked them to the side. And now I cant remove the 2nd picture.
You guys like his "Bucket" seat? LOL's.
Elky is looking good Dave.
I finished the top anvil assembly tonight. Time to start welding up the frame.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...lyfinished.jpg
Really looks nice, Pro!!!!! Anxious to see the whole machine together and functioning!!!! Next I suppose will be the planishing hammer to match it?????
Thanks Dave. Na, I went the easy route on the planishing hammer. I bought a HF hammer a couple years ago.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...hingHammer.jpg
That should work fine! Does everything you need to do, anyway....
How deep a throat are you putting on your wheel?????
I'm not sure yet. That's the next piece to figure out. Probably around 24'' - 26'' or so. I'm building it out of 2''x4'' aluminum tube to keep the weight down. I have a plan to stiffen it up. I want to keep it light so it won't be too much of a chore to get in and out of the receiver.
Kerosene heaters and paint don't mix. This is what I ended up using for temporary heat ---and the paint is still on the car. This is a Mr Heater and about $40 plus the tank
Nothing new and exciting around here.... On the 'maro, working out some of the challenges in placing 3 pedals in a footbox narrowed up by a bunch of engine setback....Plotting and planning the rest of the 4 bar mounts....Measuring things for a 8 point bar....fabbed up some trunk lid hinges, and lots of other little stuff.
On the pickup, fixing up the spot on the box where "somebody" crashed the welder into it!!!!!!:CRY::CRY: Some days truly are one step forward and 3 steps back....
Dave hey how is the shop work coming on the big sedan with the new Hemi engine.
Been messing around trying to work out some upper bars with adjustable height.... should work, the IC's come out decent, anyway
Looks like the Maro is coming along Dave. Tonight I cut a jig to align the top & bottom anvils. Next is to cut the frame tube & match it up to the flange on the back of the top wheel assembly.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eelwoodjig.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ginstalled.jpg
Oh BTW: I ended up going with a 24" throat. I figured any more would be pushing it with an aluminum frame. I plan to add gussets as it is to try & minimize deflection. I've also got a second receiver (or something) planned to support the top of the frame off the wall corner. I hope that stiffens it up enough. We will know for sure soon.
Really looking nice, Pro. Going to be one heck of a nice wheel!!!!! Now you can make the 'maro shell out of aluminum, huh?????
looks good yep you going to want to keep the frame from waking when you rolling the metal looks great pro. i would worry abit on the frame from seeing the wheels i have seen alot of power works thru it
Dave. Wouldn't that be cool. But..... to answer your question..no I don't think I'll do*that..
Yea Pat, I will have to do some creative triangulating. I know the guys building E Wheels are building them out of some heavy stuff. I'm hoping to make it sturdy enough to do what it's suppose to do but still light enough to get in and out of the receiver without using a cherry picker. lol
Dave I found a metal working forum a while back. There are some amazing projects going on there. Scratch built replicas & some just their own design. If I had their ability I might give it a try. As it is.....no.
I'll be happy if I can just get the firewall back together. :whacked::D
well i had deams of making body parts for the gto out of alum. hood for the big donovan like stock just bigger hood bump and other parts .did get the plans to build a big E wheel but buying all the steel for the rollers then the frame $$ hell i make hood out of glass if i get there. i beat on steel for many years always want to build my own stuff with a wheel .power hammer planisher . i beat steel with spoons dolys hammer s over wood . and steel for form. and shrinkers . for body parts just allways want to try the wheel
