Too bad that rear end is a little wide, Bobby. I like the deep rims on it too. The 57-59 Ford car rear end is also 57.25". The 66-70something Bronco has a 58" I think.
Morning Randy did your rear TCI leafs set stock like these are ??
Hey Bobby, my springs actually came from SAC Hotrods in Orange Co, CA, but they may be exactly the same as the TCI springs. The rear shackle mounts are a little different though. The upper shackle goes through the frame. (yes, the rear section of my frame has 3/16th angle iron welded to it. My dad did that back when we first built the car. He thought it needed more "beef" to hold a spring mount.) These mounts are different than what I had on the car before.
The first pic shows how the car sits with no weight on it except the body itself. There's no deck lid, gas tank, glass, interior or anything. I think all those parts should bring it down some but it'll still need to come down a little more. I also need to adjust the rear end forward about 1/2 -3/4" to center the wheel. This is a 28" diameter tire. 29" would be better I think.
The other pics show the upper shackle mount through the frame instead of below it like yours. That probably makes a little bit of difference in the height.
Hey Randy - how much clearance do you have there b/w the back side of the tire and the spring? looks like a nice tight fit. I am doing some double checking on all my figures before I order my wheels this winter. while we're at it..what size tire is that?
Hey Robert, it's 1.5" between the tire & the spring. 1.75" between the tire and the inner fender. The wheel is 17x8 with 3.75" backspacing and the tire is 255/50/17. I was wrong on my previously stated tire size - this tire is only 27" tall. I need the rears to be 28"+ I think.
Hope that helps! :)
yes sir that helps. I am planning for a 17x8 wheel and I'd like to find a 255/60/17 tire for a little more sidewall and to make sure there is no space at all between the tire and fender. I think I'm all set on the back...just need to measure the front for the backspace and decide how wide to go. the narrower the better probably with my manual steering.
These are Dunlop Sport 5000 265-60x17 ( 29.1Dia)

255/60/17 should get you 29.04" diameter tire http://robrobinette.com/tire_diameter.htm
That should definitely fill the wheel well.:)
What kind of rims are you going to get? I doubt that I'll keep these Coddington Smoothies on my car. I got a deal on them when I first started the project but all 4 are 17x8 and that's just too wide for the front tires to clear. I think I have 215/45/17 on the front right now which is 24.6" diameter. They would probably clear fine with a 17x7 or maybe 17x6.
Thanks for the info guys. Randy we are thinking about billet specialties vintec with spinner caps or maybe the legacy II. Something modern, but simple and a little old school...not like some of the billet wheels out there . we are going to do 15's in front too.
Randy the rear is dead center in the pick no rub and they are out side in the opening .
I like the Idea of the shackle threw the frame wonder why they set it at such a stock height ? Well blocks will get it down '
On the MII I ordered it with the long control arms didn't ask the difference in length but figured more frame clearance would be best . The wheel in pic is a early Crown Vic 15 inch 4.5 inch back spacing
Hey fellas, long time, no post! Happy New Year!! Hope your holidays were good!
I was in Oklahoma for a couple of weeks and have been working a lot since I got back to SoCal, but not on my car:(.
Why is it that when you're broke you find the good deals on some parts that you need?? Argh!!! The BMW convertible front bucket seats I want are posted on CL this week at a very reasonable price and my pockets are empty!!! Rats!!! I know it's going to be a while before I can actually drive the car but it would be helpful to plan around them. I can't really fabricate a center console or any of that stuff until I know for sure how the seats are going to fit. Oh well, someday it'll all come together....
Anyway, just checking in. Will post some pics when I actually do something!!
Randy
Hi Randy! And a Happy New Year to you as well! :) I was thinking that I should search out this thread and plug in some updates, "just because"!
I stole some time this past sunday and actually made some progress on mine!
I've been struggling to get the connection at the front to be "just so". The fenders come together and a connector hold it all together but they just wouldn't fit just right so I ended up cutting it all away and "re-working" the joints and after a few attempts it is starting to come together, I didn't plan on being there so no pictures..:( But I hope to get back in this weekend so I'll snap a few. I really wish these were metal fenders as I would've been done weeks ago! This fiberglass and trying to get the shape "just so".. it's been kicking my butt!
And a big 10-4 on the deals coming when the pocketbook is empty! Why is it we always remember those deals the most also?!? **)
Hi Randy, we thought that maybe you didn`t like us anymore..... hey we know life just gets busy and the hobbies wait....:toocool:
Randy, I kinda figured when we didn't hear much from you that you must have made your yearly pilgrimage back to be re-okied.
Now it's time to get back to work on your vehicle(s).
Welcome back:D
Everyone has been quite lately , I have been a little under the weather and not doing much . But at least the builder has done some and spirits are up .
A couple pics

Hey fellas,
I did a small little project on mine today. I purchased a halogen headlight conversion kit from Bob Drake several months. Since I had a little time to kill today, here's a few pics of what I did....
Now I just need to clean up the buckets and paint them.
Lookin' good, guys. I too have been a bit under the weather - cold then flu but now I think done till the next time:CRY:.
That looks like quite a mod, Randy
I got the new 325# (effective rate (300)springs on the front end replacing the 160s (150 effective) as well as make up a front license bracket. I also did a 3rd tail light but need to take a couple of photos of that:

Nice springs, Dave! I see now why you chose that color for your car.....to match your license plate.....:LOL: Looks great!
Yeah, on my headlights, the sealed beams behind the original glass lenses were never really very bright. Hopefully, the halogens behind the original lens will give me a brighter outlook on things. :3dSMILE: There is a big rubber grommet that fits into that big hole in the back of the bucket. It's supposed to allow you to change the bulb from the back when necessary.
I had a choice* when I did my registration - the older blue on white or the "coordinating" color. I do need to do the raised accent line ..........................:whacked:
*(The county clerks DMV office still had some of the older versions for "friends" and we are friends, but I went with the new color:D)
I saw those at the street rod nats last year Randy, think I`m going with the clear poly lenses though, they make a big differance at night, lot longer light beam on the road.
Wow Dave! More shiny stuff in the front suspension! I guess you got the time to clean it tho'..
I thought the first pic wasn't your car as the color looked yellow! Just proves what lighting can do!
Been working in Buffalo, snows every other day :( Can't wait to go home this weekend, hope the airports stay open.
I needed springs, Speedway had AFCO's and they are either yellow or chrome:whacked: Clean it? Once or twice a year maybe?
Under florescent lighting, it shows almost yellow, natural light it turns much more orange. The paint supplier said it probably is that wee bit of pearl in the mix. If someone says it's yellow, then I don't argue - it's close enough
Gotta love Buffalo ( I don't) but the folks are hardy there
I've got visions of you being "bored"..:whacked: and laying on the creeper, under the front end, once or twice a year? I won't believe that!!!:D:D
Close enough.. I agree..
Buffalo is okay. WAY to expensive for my tastes! Only time I saw the sun in the last week is when the plane rose above the clouds yesterday afternoon! Now I'm home and trying to catch up! Seems we had 8 inches of the white stuff here!:CRY:
I've been to Cali a few times. Maybe I've only seen the negative sides of it:HMMM: But I don't care to go back! And I want NO PART of AHNOLD! **) But the weather should be perfect for Dave and HIS Creeper!:LOL::D:D:):)
I actually had a blast on the tractor with the snowthrower! The sun was out, warm when not in the wind! It didn't take but 30 minutes so Life was GOOD! :p
And now back to our regularly scheduled broadcast! Anyone else working on their car? I noticed a broken cross chain on the tractor tires so after I replace it I'll try to get some more sanding done on the car.
I'll make a good effort to remember to bring the camera too!:3dSMILE::D
Hmmmm....I could say so many things....but I think I'll just leave that one alone....:LOL::eek:
I pulled out a front fender over the weekend and started removing the undercoating that I slathered on there 20+ years ago. It was a tar based stuff in a big vat. It's held up pretty well but I think I need to take if off and start over. Any of you guys have a great method of undercoat removal that you would recommend?
I`ve never undercoated mine, let alone wax the rear end.....! ???
