Thanks, Mike!!! :D:D:D:D:D from ear to ear!:)
Some good folks on the SPI forum - I just don't do much more then lurk occasionally as I get too tied up here and one other site for my auto fix.
The SPI bed liner is supposed to be great stuff though I haven't used it. I did talk to Barry one time about it to use on my truck but didn't pull the trigger. As far as applying it - for sure use his gun. I did mine with 3-4 spray cans, Duplicolor, I believe, about 8 bucks or so each from Advance after I painted it but before assembly. Overspray is almost impossible to remove and of course I was able to find a couple holes where my masking off wasn't too well done:eek:. If I were to do it again, it would be before BC/CC paint, making sure that items like fender and panel flanges were not coated.
Again, lookin' good
Very cool Randy!! I'm trying to figure out where you're at now...once you finish spraying the epoxy do you have much left to do before spraying the color and final assembly?
Hey Robert, I wish I could say I'm about ready for paint but alas, I can't. I had all those body parts sand blasted a while back then did some preliminary pounding & welding before shooting the epoxy on them. At least now they are protected from rust, etc. I still have to skim coat them in some areas with filler then seal them with more epoxy after I get them blocked out. I still have to finish stripping the body, too and a whole bunch of other stuff.:)
How's your car coming along?
I feel like we have spent most of the year playing with our wiper/sunroof motor problem. There just wasn't enough room for both. We didn't want to cut up the wiper kit only to still not be able to make it fit so we gave up and ordered a SPW kit then realized we would need to drill new holes anyway and we liked the New Port kit better. So we moved both holes one inch to the right, cut into the roof structure to fit the wiper motor, cut up the upper wiper linkage to clear the sunroof motor and welded up the first holes. Everything clears now except we still haven't gotten the sunroof to power. We have seen the gear turn out of the car so we know it will work it's all just being difficult. I blame the German wiring ;). We have done some other things here and there, but nothing that shows progress. We're hoping to wrap some things up for the winter. Then put in the insulation, window channels, windows, etc, etc. before getting it inspected this spring and driving it for a while before tearing it down for interior and paint. We aren't in a rush for interior and paint..maybe not even next year. I would rather just enjoy it for a while.
What? What?:confused: It's hard to make any sense of this without pics!:D:D
Hey Robert, thanks for the update! I forgot you were putting a sunroof in there. I'm sure keeping the overhead wipers would be a challenge with that. Did you keep the crank-out windshield or seal it in? Did you consider moving the wipers down on the cowl? Just curious.
I still have the crank-out windshield on my 37 and installed the SPW wiper kit many years ago. I mounted the motor down in the kick panel and ran the cable up thru the roof pillar. It works great except I don't think the wiper studs were mounted at the correct angle with the windshield because the wipers would always fly out at highway speeds.:CRY: I will correct that in this re-build.
Anyway, post up some pics if you get a chance. Would be great to see what you're doing....:)
Sorry, Randy I don't doubt it's hard to follow without pics. It's hard for me to follow :whacked: We are keeping the windshield crank and cowl vent so running the wipers below wouldn't work too well. The holes for the New Port kit don't come out symetrical over the windshield. The passenger hole ends up just past the middle of the windshield which is right where the sunroof motor is. So moving everything over and a couple other slices took care of it.
I think we have it now, but it has just been one problem after another . Buying the SPW kit where the passenger side would have come out way further over and the motor down on the cowl would have worked much better. The New Port kit is a good kit for a stock application though. It comes with nice chrome escutcheons for the outside which make the angle the splines come out of the roof fool proof (I hope! we'll see if I have the highway problems). You could tell it was a kit designed for a 35/36 versus the SPW universal kit.
I just looked up the New Port kit and it looks pretty sweet. I haven't heard of them before and don't think they were available when I bought my SPW kit. Like I said, I've always been please with the operation of the SPW except for the fly away wiper blades. I think I need some escutcheons with the proper angle so the splines are perpendicular to the windshield.
BTW I could make sense of what you wrote, I was just giving you crap about not posting pics because that's what I do to the others....:D:D
Randy - we WANT pictures. We ALWAYS want pictureshttp://planetsmilies.net/shocked-smiley-9483.gif.
I'm even going to post a few of the engine compt. changes I've made over the past 3-4 weeks (the ones I alluded to a while back) to bore the troops, maybe even tomorrow
Alright alright...I know I enjoy other's pictures so I'll stop being lazy. I have a few on my work computer now so I'll put those up, but I am going to do it in the "everyone who is building a car" thread even though I see this one has finally become "public". It isn't very exciting stuff, but progres none the less! When it rains we'll be ready :D
OK - in a never ending quest ....... (Dave, stop the BS:eek:)
I made some engine compartment changes to clean up some things that I really didn't care much for after a couple years.
This is what it looked like the picture order WILL come out different, but that's the forum software:eek: so you will have to mentally sort them out

Next the 'update' without that Coolflex upper hose and the high mounted alternator. I also went to the wide spread terminal style MSD distributor cap on the small diameter billet distributor. I lost that small dia. advantage, but since I had some evidence of cross firing, should correct the problem.
The alternator bracket is a Skip White ebay special - bracket and spacer are fine. The supplied bolts were useless as was the very long turnbuckle. My $40 bracket became a $60 challenge with a homemade turnbuckle and some McMaster Carr bolts. I shouldn't complain as the complete bracket arrangement is a Wyseco, used by Summit, March and Proform at much higher prices.
I took off the Cool-Flex upper radiator hose which I really didn't care for the day I installed it. Speedway has a steel version that I 'V' notched to match the radiator and engine, rewelded, added a couple pieces of their silicone hoses and some Gates shrink fit clamps (one side of the hoses so far until I 'prove' my welding doesn't leak)
The coil has been moved off of the top of the intake to a new bracket.
To me, that engine looks "cleaner", less cluttered
There are a few more updates, like remove that convoluted wire harness and replace it with nylon braiding, remount the trans dipstick, machine polish the aluminum, but winter isn't even officially here yet .......
Nice improvements Dave. I prefer low mount alternators for just the reason you stated, and I HATE the look of the rippled rad hoses........rubber especially, but even the stainless. One of these days (cars?) I want to give those Gates shrink clamps a try. Do they make smaller ones to clean up that bypass hose as well?
Thanks Uncle Bob - this was a fun project as that is the way I originally 'envisioned' the engine compartment. Other parts of the project were more important to make it a driver.
As far as the ribbed rubber hose - I dislike those with a passion. And the Cool-Flex - that seemed like a good idea until I installed it, then it, IMO, really didn't look so nice, though some cars don't look too bad with them.
Those Gates shrink clamps go down in size to 1/2" up to 3". The ones I originally bought were from Speedway and had to be sent back as I ordered the wrong size, but McMaster-Carr have a better selection McMaster-Carr.
I need to order some for the bypass, heater and lower radiator hoses (when I replace them though)
Looks good Dave! I would probably like to see a little less rubber on the bottom of the radiator hose, but I do like that look. I almost got one of those cool flex hoses, but went with a cheaper molded rubber one and I don't regret it.
what is the cross piece on the radiator support rods for? Is that just a support for the hood to rest on? Mine has been laying around for a while now and I'm not exactly sure what to do with it. Not that we have a hood yet either..
That looks good, Dave! :DI definitely like the alternator better on the low side. That's where mine has always been. Of course, I'll have an AC compressor mounted above that.
To get clearance on my cross member my oil pan came from an 80-86 F150 and the dip stick is on the driver side screwing into the pan. I still have to find a decent screw-in tube & dipstick that will clear my headers, tho. It doesn't appear to be the same size fitting as the screw-in 351W oil pan.
I like that radiator hose treatment, too. I see you have what appears to be a heater/ac bulkhead on the firewall but no hoses. No heater hooked up?:HMMM:
I'm sure I'll follow your lead on the distributor, too, but I'm not quite ready for that yet......
.....and thanks for the pics!!:D I don't understand why they can't make it so we can add captions to each pic.:(:( That would make it a lot easier to explain what we're doing!!
Actually Randy, that's supposed to be one of the "improvements" with the new software/pic posting. It's always been available with using a photo hosting site, but the new software can also do it from pics housed in your own hard drive. Sadly, I've not taken the time (perhaps frustration too) to figure out how to do it. Perhaps one of the other guys who has made the effort can show us the way. Hmmmm, does my expecting another member to spoon feed me on this make me an OCHR (Occupy Club Hot Rod) member?:D
Yeah, Bob, I guess I could use a little spoon feeding, too! :D It seems like in the past when using Photobucket or whatever, you could definitely write captions between the pics but the pics would often show up a links on this site instead of actually pictures. I'll do some exploring and see if I can figure something out. If not, I'll just have to pitch a tent with you and wait for somebody to give us something....
That extra length rubber hose is due to the fact that the Speedway tubing ends up being about an inch+ shorter then what I needed. for the application. I would eventually like to have it Jet Hot coated and at that time will add some length. That cross piece is for the hood supports. Since I'm currently running without hood sides, I made up some different ones that use the bolt holes on that as well as the hood side rod loops.
Randy, my original brackets were for the alternator and the a/c compressor. When I decided to not use the a/c, I then just used the alt bracket, but somewhat modified. After having the car on the road for a while decided that it just didn't look right, unbalanced. Then to, it was a bear to do anything with the distributor. As far as a heater, it's a big Vintage Air, installed, works great, but I decided to 'prove' my mods plus make an attempt to do something better then having a couple crappy looking hoses draped alongside the engine.
I guess I would end up making my own dipstick tube, possibly even a flexible one or adapt one of Lokar's if I had your arrangement.
This is what I originally started with and was set up for the sedan that began this saga:whacked::D:D.

My last post was using the forum software and it put the photo at the beginning of my diatribe. I simply cut and pasted it where I wanted it to go. Yep!! A royal PITA, but I tried it and it worked. Now, I'll try it with two photos if you folks will indulge me

IT WORKED!!!
For a neater heater line install a variation on the upper coolant hose would be hard lines with flexible connectors at each end. Drop the lines down to the frame and then back to near firewall and back up (or if starting new bring them in at the kick board). A Model A frame doesn't leave much room, but getting a majority of the tubing down low helps the line of sight. Especially effective if the tubing could be routed under the headers, say along the oil pan rail, but again, depends on space.
That's kind of what I'm planning - tho Ford makes it a bit difficult with the placement in the intake manifold of the one line. 1/2" conduit might be a way to go as it is fairly close the same OD as the nominal 5/8" heater hose ID. Then if I like it, transfer the pattern to SS tubing, if the funding is there.
It IS tight there though, so it might be an interesting project and under the hugger style headers - maybe not. That size conduit is cheap, so we'll see what works.
Ok, I'll take the experiment further to see if I can write things in between the pics....
http://www.clubhotrod.com/attachment...1&d=1323553031
Well, that doesn't seem to work....:mad:http://www.clubhotrod.com/attachment...1&d=1323553033
When I preview the post, I can drag the image to be placed in between dialogue but it only seems to post the image url and not the image itself.:HMMM: How dumb is that? or am I the one who's dumb??!!! Don't answer that!!!
Can someone spoon feed me now??:)
I'll give it a whirl

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL & HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!
Still piddling in garage but a family passing and the holidays have kept me busy . No slowing down after New Years .
Hey Bobby, sorry about the loss in the family... tough time of year to go through that....
Thanks Dave Appreciated . Your pics where of the 57 though .
The truck would be sweet in Fords lot , but like you I am wrapped in finishing 2 by early summer .

Your hood line fits nice Randy , mine had been crimped slightly and will have to be worked to get that much correction
You can see the noise drop down really far .
http://inlinethumb31.webshots.com/42...425x425Q85.jpg
Hey Bobby, thanks for doing whatever you did to figure out how to write between the pics. Now you gotta explain it to the rest of us!!
Which hood fitting pic are you referring to? My hood actually doesn't fit all that great. I want it to fit a good as that red 37 pic above. That's a car I saw at a car show. Or maybe you're referring to the hood sitting on top of my car...:3dSMILE:
I'll try it... First we insert a pic...
Attachment 52435
Then hit the enter key two or three times...
Then select/insert another pic..Attachment 52436
Then we'll choose preview post.
It looks correct here so we'll try it for real.
It appears the picture size has something to do with it also. I expected the first sentence to be above the pic but the smaller picture size makes it fit alongside. I'm going to try and move it lower now. And I was able to move the picture under the sentence by hitting the enter key a couple times.
Hey Mike, are you using images that you've uploaded to the site or are you using the image url from a photobucket type of site? Before, when I used the image url from photobucket, it just shows the link to the image in my post but I want it to show the image and allow me to write details pertaining to a specific image.
Hi Randy, I used the sites software and uploaded pics from my computer under "manage attachments". The pics even stayed in order! LOL..
I hope it works for ya! I drove the car a few times and then began replacing the coil over shocks. Tried the car once since and decided to raise it another inch. Sadly I wrenched my back and have been trapped on the couch for the past 3 weeks!:CRY:
I just had a CT scan and it shows some damage in L3 / L4 so we'll try meds first. I hope this works! Last choice is surgery:HMMM::HMMM::CRY:
See, that's what happens when you try to "raise" a hot rod rather than lower it!:whacked: It obviously didn't want to be raised and made you pay for it!;)
Seriously, sorry about your back. When your back hurts, you hurt all over!! Maybe we should just pray for a good old fashion healin'! :D Keep your wrenching on your car, not your back!! Don't get too comfortable on that couch either!:)
Randy actually I thought that one on top was yours from a time ago ,
Thanks for the kind words also .
