Rich - I'm moving the alternator to a mid position on the RHS. I made up the existing wrap around bracket and married it to a Street and Performance head mounted piece. What it does is make it difficult to access the distributor plus seems to take over the top of the engine. I also can't install a big cap on the distributor to stop potential cross firing with the MSD. I'm going to use a Wysco bracket and fully understand that I'll probably have to do some mods. As far as the Cool-Flex hose - I just don't like it - too many cars have them. I'll be making up a replacement from a 1.5" piece of tubing.
re: all the "sighs".....
Oh ye of little faith.......
HMmm.. I think I might enjoy that spreadsheet!
While I can toss pebbles now, my real motivator to complete mine so quickly was the State of Mass.! With the new rules coming into place in 2012, cars like mine will be so difficult to deal with, rodding as we know it is over I think! I had to beat that deadline and get my car in and grandfathered. (Their term too!) Since the car is now grandfathered, it doesn't need to meet the Year of Manufacturer (YoM) emmisions which in this case would be 2011!
In April 2012, "Assembled Vehicles" can only use a "certified manufacturer" drivetrain. That means the motor / transmission / rear axle have to be an assy from a late model vehicle with OBD 2 capabilities! The vehicle assembled from it will also need the plastic emmision stickers from the original vehicle in place! Oh, and if you want to change the rear axle, you need to stay within 3% of the original ratio! There's a lot more to it also but as you can see, I did NOT want to be a part of that! Hence the big push to get mine into the system.
So I guess I should thank the State of California for setting the standards for all these other states to follow...**)**):(:(:mad: for they really did push me into beating the deadline! Oh Yes.. SIGH........;)
Randy - create away. Like Mike, will enjoy a good comparison.:D:LOL:
If all goes according to plan, mine should again be drivable on Thanksgiving. The weather will probably conspire against that plan, but.....
Well, to actually create that spreadsheet would take away much creative time from working on my car.....but suffice it to say there are some definite differences in available project cash, usable workspace, limited times when noisy work can be done, having to make a living, etc, etc, etc but I'm not jealous, just envious!;):3dSMILE:
Well there you go! We can show progress after all!! :D:LOL::D:rolleyes::rolleyes:
My issues are another matter entirely! :3dSMILE::eek::whacked:
I've already taken mine apart to replace the coil over shocks that were leaking. Seems a dozen years in the same position (for the most part) allowed the rods to rust/corrode, now I start driving it and the rods passing through the seals have done the damage, I knew it was coming as I saw the rust when I first picked up the chassis.
Shocks and spring selection has turned into a mind bender with so many choices / measurements / angles / opinions and much more. That's okay as I had to have an appraisal done for the insurance company. It came in at 30K! :D:) so I was happy!
The appraiser even used the terms "professional assembler" and "quality components", I was looking around and over my shoulder to see who else was in the room!:o:cool:
I am just going to lurk for a bit more :). You guys are doing great !!!!!
hmmm....I guess that makes you a "lurky-loo" Bobby.........which sounds like you're just sitting back and watching while they grill me about my lack of progress on my car..... and I thought we were joined at the '37 Fords!.....
Actually, I spent the day tending to some matters on my daily driver 66 F100 shortbed.
I finally found a pretty straight bed at an OK price so I bought it. It was delivered here on Tues. (btw if you need to ship anything, check into uShip - The Online Shipping Marketplace - Ship Freight, Furniture, Cars or Moves . They delivered the bed to me from northern Cal to SoCal far cheaper than I could go after it myself). I had posted my damaged bed (caused by the sleeping driver who smacked my truck last year) on craigslist. A guy bought it with intentions of repairing it for his '64 F100 shortbed. Anyway, he came to pick up the bed tonight. Now my truck is bedless....looks kinda naked:HMMM: but it's easy to see everything when you're in reverse. Tomorrow I hope to weld up a couple of un-needed holes in my new bed, undercoat it and mount it on my truck. No, it's not the '37 but it is somewhat vintage and still gives me some car status on CHR....it also adds to the further bastardisation of this thread....:LOL::LOL::LOL::3dSMILE:
So I guess we'll call him Bobby Loo!:LOL:**):D He is from the south ya know, and it has a good "ring" to it!:):3dSMILE:
All teasing aside Randy, it's great that you found some great parts for the truck! It was a sad day when "she" got smacked.. How about some pics? You know how we like pics right? LOL... :3dSMILE:
Do I see "fresh meat" to pick on??
Randy - again!! You post a teaser and not a picture in sight!!! :(
And you'll note that I left that one alone!:LOL: But now that it's out there, Far be it from me to rag on someone for forgetting us and sharing some photos...:( I mean when others did it to me well, I just felt terrible for forgetting my buddies here and all..
(ya think I laid it down a little to heavy?)
Well, MIKEY......now that you threw it out there, far be it from me to use nomenclature that you hate so much but once in a while I lose complete control of my fingers and the type whatever they type!:D
If it's pics you want fellas, here's my day....or week...or whatever.....
Ok, so I hate the method of adding pics on this site! Argh! I wanted to add captions but don't know how to do that.
So, we'll go with what we have:
As a refresher, you may remember my truck got smacked by an idiot who fell asleep while driving down my street. His '06 Toyota Solara was totaled and my truck sustained significant damage to the left corner of the bed and various other parts. The insurance company wanted to total mine, too and pay me as if it was a gardener's truck, but I fought them on it and they paid me for damages and I don't have a salvage title. Yay!
Since my old bed had rust in the front, new damage on the left rear, and right side had heavy bondo, I decided to look for a good replacement bed. Decent '64-66 F100 short beds are really hard to find! But I finally found a decent one. The bed floor is solid except the some previous owner felt the need to drill 21 drain holes in it....
Thus pic 1 - I spent the morning welding up many of those unnecessary holes.
pic 2 - I attached little pieces of copper to the top side of the bed floor with a magnet and welded the holes from the back side.
pics 3,4,5 - The I coated the underside of the bed with the Hy-Tech Metal Shield product that is shown in the pic. I bought it a few years ago for my '37 but decided to try it out on this.
More pics in next post....
I sold my old bed on craigslist because it was definitely worth repairing if you have the time and space to do it. The buyer picked it up last night so my truck has been bedless today.:eek:
While the bed was off I took it to the car wash and blasted the chassis and shot a little rustoleum on it. Since this is not a frame off restoration, that will have to do for now...
How about the cool '60 Dodge Power Wagon in the background? That belongs to my neighbor. My truck now parks next to it. :whacked:
The underside of my new bed will be dry tomorrow and I'll put it on. I can do the rest of the body work as time permits....
There you have it gents! It's a pleasure as always....:D

Mikey - Huh? ;) I'll let it go this time! :D
Ah the Pics! Love'em! That truck is so clean! It must be a blast to drive too! Do you have any help moving big pieces around? Even a short bed has gotta be tough by yourself! It would be clumsy and bulky no? The bottom came out nice, I'll bet you can't wait for it to be all complete again! This chapter has been a long one!
And look at Dave Severson jumping in here! Hooray!
We see the count go up but never many replies for some reason?!?!
And 406rich, good to see you back in here as well! Now we just need Don Shillady! :)
OK Bobby, you can come out of hiding now!
Very nice, Randy. That vintage truck around here would have been crushed into 100 pound bale of steel and sent to China to return in a different form at Harbor Fright, the rest having been distributed along the highways and byways as flakes of iron oxide
So I'm wondering what in hell could generate over 80 pages about headers on a '37 Ford...........................now I see it's a little "private" club.
Those deep rims really work with the truck shape/size.
Unca Bob - it's NOT a private/secret sect, but there are some stipulations that are hidden even from us.
Amazing that it took you goin' on almost 5 years to "find" us:eek::D
Very nice truck Randy...wish it were mine...:)
Good lookin' old Ford Randy! Anxious to see it with the new bed on it!
Wow! Thanks for all the kudos, guys!! I love this truck but must admit it has stolen it's share of time from the '37 in the title of this thread!!:CRY::) It still has the 352V8/cruise-o-matic/Dana 44 limited slip drive train, all of which I have threatened to toss more than once! It runs great, sounds great (especially after adding the headers & flowmaster 50s) and to be honest, it's the first vehicle I've ever owned with a limited slip rear end. I love that and now the '37 MUST have a limited slip!!
The down side is the mpg's..... which almost translates to gpm's!:eek::CRY:
But everytime I drive it, which is everyday, I get a thumbs up, a wave, a "nice truck", "what year is it?", "wanna sell it?" or many other comments that keep me putting gas in it!
I've owned the truck for almost 3yrs. My dad had a '65 F100 when I was a kid and I always liked it. I have mixed feeling about the twin-i-beam suspension but I made it better by converting to power steering, power disc brakes, and a front sway bar from all from a '78 F150. It's a pretty easy swap and direct fit. It's a pretty straight, mostly original California truck and I haven't been able to veer too far from that but who knows what the future holds if I win the lottery or something??!!!:D:D
Anyway, before I turn this into an essay.....
Thanks again for the kudos, guys!
-Dave (IC2, orignally IrelandsChild) was among the first responders to this thread back in the day. He's been a huge source of help, knowledge, and encouragement over the years with an occasional kick in the butt...which is a good thing!
-Sorry for using the "M" word, Mike. You know I'm just kidding around;)
-Uncle Bob & Dave S, Welcome to our NOT SO PRIVATE, Private thread...:LOL: It's DEFINITELY not meant to be private! It's really more of a gabfest on some days but I love it! There's is a ton of great info in here if one has the patience to find it! Of course, you guys can write the book on great info! And Bob, I do hope you find your pants this morning!!:LOL:
-Thanks, Rich! This too can be yours but you might have to dump the Chebbie!:) Is the Chebbie a short bed?
A wire wheel in your 4" angle grinder is an excellent method of skin removal....
Just thought you'd like to know. :HMMM:
A cut off heel in same grinder only puts a notch in a knuckle.
(bicker, bicker, bicker - now kids, be nice:whacked:)
