I don't know what you meant about your trans was for a 4x4????
I cannot stress enough the FACT that DRIVELINE alignments are far more important than exhaust header clearance. It is not an issue of hood clearance and that trans and shift linkage should work in stock Monte locations---If the motor mounts are an issue with what you have you need to start over on some differant motor mounts.
jerry the mechanic told charlie that the yoke on my th400 was alot larger than the yoke on my rear. that the yoke was for a 4x4. he is going to use my other yoke. he is also going to align my drive line to the right angle. he had to make new motor mounts and weld them in place. he also cut my frame and welded in a plate so my exhaust will clear. the shift linkage was being pinched by the size of the motor in comparison to my 350 so he cut and refit the shift linkage. sorry if i am confusing trying to explain this but it is all new to me.
OK Barb--that order sounds better---The yoke was wrong, not the trans---he is making motormounts so as to align the drive line and then a slight mod to the frame for exhaust clearance---Did you ever get it to run??
Barb sounds like good progress. I tried fitting my headers last week, and found I have a clearance issue to around the steering box. So I will be rerouting the old motor mounts too, but as you will enlist help from the pros on this one. It may cost more, but they'll get it done this year! :)
thanks stovens. i can not wait to get it back so i can try to learn a little fiberglassing. i want to make a console. also i am going to replace the back dash. jerry i could not get it to start so he is going to fix that for me too.

lol. he better not. he called my husband this morning to say that he was finished. he wants my son to come over this afternoon so he can talk to him about the bill. will let you guys know what he said when charlie gets back.
my hubby went over this afternoon amd got the bill $700.00 which i think is very reasonable. He told chuck that the reason it would not start is that the fuel pump is bad. He also said that the engine is in great shape. As soon as i pay for it she will be home. I still need to fis the radiator, fuel pump, and power steering pump. but to me those are minor compared to what i was facing.
Sounds reasonable to me, Barb. Those other things should be easy to fix and finish. Are you going with an electric fuel pump or one in the block?
i am going to replace the original one on the block with another. i knew that the one on the block could be bad due to its age but i do not have the money to fix what i thought was not broken.

Don't know Barb, price of fuel is so high, maybe you should take that big Caddy out and go for a V-6 or something so you can afford fuel for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek::eek::eek: ;) :LOL::LOL::LOL:
that does make sense dave but i am only going to go to local car shows with it and small cruises.

$700 is cheap in hot rod dollars, Barb. Well worth it to get irritating problems ironed out.
thanks falcon i think so too. charlie gave the mechanic over half this afternoon and told him we would be paying the rest and getting her home friday. he said that it would be fine with him and to tell me that he really enjoyed working on the monte.
Too bad you're not closer to DC as I plan on being in DC over the Fourth with my oldest daughter and her family and I'd love to see your Monte running.

she is home. mechanic says that my fuel pump is bad. also that my spark plugs are fouled from the engine sitting for awhile before i got it. so after a spark plug and oil change today i am going to put some gas in the carb and finally fire it up to hear it.

Barb, Did the mechanic run the engine? Just be careful! Timing off and gas in the carb=backfire thru the carb!
Yeah Barb, when you say "...put some gas in the carb..." I assumed you were filling the float bowls so you could get thirty or forty seconds of run time. I'm not sure pouring gas into the intake is such a good idea, if that's what you're thinking, especially if you're planning on continuing to add fuel manually? Don't want to see anyone burned, or the Monte going up in flames after all your hard work.Quote:

Good decision and change the fuel filter while you're at it. I'd check everything twice before trying to fire it for the first time. You've been at this too long for everything to go up in smoke.

If you are having thoughts about trouble with it starting (GAS and all) I'd do it out in the yard not in the shop

ok guys i have a question. while i am waiting for my fuel pump i am trying to hook up my oil pressure gauge. I have a autolite manual gauge in my car but a idiot light wire on the engine. how do i convert it to manual or do i have to buy another gauge.
Pull the sending unit the wire is attached to and replace it with the proper size brass fitting. If you can run copper tube to the gauge as the plastic tubes have a habit of getting crimped or they can melt if they're exposed to too much heat.
