Barb,
I just want to give you a word of encouragement. I was so fed up with my truck I was ready to get rid of it. I asked myself what the heck am I doing people say they love this I said I hate it. When it started I had to call my friend from the old neighborhood. He was a kid about 4 or 5 years old he would come over to see what he called my (OLD FASHION CARS) to make a long story short he has been paralyzed since he was 19 years old from a drunk driver car accident. That was 21 years ago and he is Hooked Big Time on cars and has a Race Van that is running in the 10’s. When the truck showed 50 pounds at idle when I got the new gauge hooked up after all of those years of sitting I had to call him he was excited like me.
My point is you will get there and I know, you know you will get there also it may just take something real simple to get it going. I always look for the hard things first and over look the simple, that’s just the way I am. Good luck you’ll get it going soon.
Richard
thanks richard that is exactly how i feel. i am out of my league with something that i know is a easy fix and i am frustrated. this entire operation has not gone smoothly. every thing i have tried does not go as planned or as easy as i thought it would. i am finished with the engine for a little while and have moved on to trying to get what i believe to be 40 years old universals out to install the new ones. every once in a while i will go back to the front of the car and try something else to get the engine to start. I am using a metric socket that i have 20 of and a dead blow hammer to try to beat the universal out. some days i feel like i caould take a shotgun and blow right through the grill and put it out of its misery. oh well, i am sure that i will be working hard on it again soon. does anyone else here get these feelings?
I would rather work on my cars than the plumbing in my house!
now i enjoy plumbing. just remodled my bathroom a couple of years ago. at least that went as planned.
Barb,
It happens to me once in a while, also. That''s why for me I like to have a couple of projects.
I wish we all lived closer to each other, it's times like this it would be really nice to drop by and give a hand.
Hang in their. :)
Ken
This is from an old Friend of yours . Now set the Points and make sure you have Power to your coil and Fuel in the Line / carb and start that Engine up .
thanks tango. and thanks to my old friend. i believe that my firing order is correct. when i redid my spark plug wires i did them one at a time so as not to get them in the wrong order. going to get a neighbor of mine to come over this afternoon to check my wiring. he is a electrician and knows how to read the voltage meter. ken i wish that you guys lived closer too.
Your husband might not like it if he came home to find 20 guys trying to help you do stuff!!! HE! HE! HE! I could just hear him, Barb you have some splanning to do!!!
I am still waiting for that burn out video.
Hope you get it going real soon Barb.
Kurt
waiting on a distributor to be shipped in. there were none locally. thanks vara. hubby is used to me hanging out with guys and talking cars. thank goodness.
HE! HE! HE! I like him already.
My buddy had a real nice girl that knew about cars and she would go to the races even if he did not. She was pretty and smart and liked cars.
He went out and cheated on her I wanted to smack the piss out of him after that she met another guy and he didn't like her hanging out with a bunch of guys or gears heads so she stop comming around. She was a good girl and my buddy was a idiot.
Kurt
sounds like he really was a idiot. my hubby used to go to sea with the navy for 7 months at a time. he knows that i stayed true to him. if i did not cheat on him then he when he was thousands of miles away he knows that i am not going to when i am in our back yard in the garage. as far as other guys he knows all i am interested in is their cars.:D
cool barb.you bout got that thing ready for a drive.cant wait to see that thing on the road.
Did you and your neighbor find anthing out yet Barb???
I am starting to get excited for you because I think you are
gonna love that motor in that car. Some of those engine swaps
can be pretty tricky. Not just with the wirring but getting some
of the motor mounts right so the engine is not sitting twisted or
something. I think you've gotten past the worst of it though.
Let us know what you find. Kurt
trying to hunt down a used one. hei with vaccumn advance. contacted summit racing to see about a kit to change my points one over. every used one i find for a 74 caddy their website says that they have it but when i call to order one they say that they dont.
Tell 'em it's a '76, 500 CID. Their catalogs probably don't show HEI for the year of 472 that you are telling them. And the parts fellows probably aren't old enough to remember a 7.7 or an 8.2 litre motor. ;)
thanks tech that helps alot.
Ya my brother's 76 Eldorado was a 501 with the HEI.
I love the car but I didn't like the front wheel drive on it. Seem's like every couple of years he had to do front end work to stop that clicking from the CV's.
Give me that Turbo 400 and rear wheel drive everytime.
Kurt
looking forward to driving mine kurt.
I bet you are Barb.
What motor did you have in there before?
Did you put some new springs in or are they the same?
I am not sure if you have this info already, but here is a site below.

Barb
would you consider putting your distributor and coil in a package and sending it to me to fix for you??? Even if you get the hei you would then have the points for a spare.
Jerry
kurt i had a 350 edelbrock putting out about 410 hp. they guy that i got the car from was sitting it up to race. when i put in the 472 there was not difference in the weight on the springs. jerry i would send you the old coil system but i threw it away when i cleaned the garage up from all the junk of the swap. wish now that i had kept it.
yep. i only paid 6 bucks for it. by the time i decided to change over to hei i was so pissed i threw it all out.
a $6.00 coil?????surely you jest!!!!!!
Would you like for me to get a dist for you?
yep 6 bucks for the coil. i have a distributor lined up just have to get the money in the bank. guy in ohio has one for $150. Is that high? it is a hei for a 74 caddy non efi.
only one i could find.
thanks hoss
hi barb this is a co. on craigslist los angles they have new hei for 80.00 no core or they can convert your to to hei there ph# is 626 960 5164 I would send you a link but that's above my capability....ted
Dang Louey; I'll let you know when I need something for my car. HE! HE! HE!
At them there prices I can almost afford to buy something.
Kurt
Barb, I was surfin' on ebay and found this HEI. This is a re-listing, as he had no bids on it the first time around. You should be able to get this unit for under 50 bucks delivered to your door. Go to ebay and enter item # 300492543169.
Here's another one on ebay that says it was pulled from a 425 and will fit a 500. I'm uncertain whether or not that's true, but if it is, then you could own this one for less than 40 bucks delivered to your door. Go to ebay and enter item #160505800457.
thanks tech. that is a huge help
got the buy it now one. i hate waiting on bids for 5 days and run the risk of losing them both. thank you once again tech. you are a life saver.
ok guys got my distributor in and wired (thanks again Tech). As i try to start it it pops out of the exhaust. when it does that i turn the key off. Is that normal or do i have a problem. I do not want to hurt the engine. It does not do it until it tries to crank for awhile. should i keep letting it do that until it runs or is there something i have to check.
If the engine pops through the exhaust the timing is retarted. If it pops through the carb you are advanced to much. Check timing Check location of plug wires. Sounds likeyour getting there good luck
okay guys. got the timing straight. but now it is blowing fire out of the head where i removed the pollution control. that is what charlie said it was doing. so now i have to block those holes off and try again. will start again tomorrow morning as i have to feed the hubby. i will let you know how it goes.
You have everyone sitting on the edge of there work benches on this one:)
