lol that would be fine with me.
Congratulations Barb and I want too know what word that was that slipped out between your lips? It might be one that I'm not familiar with. Keep at young lady, you are putting me to shame by accomplishing more work on your car than me.
lol. whip i know all the bad words. when i got gas in my eyes i said them all.
Congrats on the engine firing.
Its one of the most rewarding parts of a build.
yes it is pugsy.
im happy for you jyardgirl. its a heck of a feelin when it comes to life the first time.time for a little happy dance.i would love to have ben a fly on the wall when it first lit up..how long did it take to wipe that grin off your face?:):)
i still have it geezer.
Congrats Barb, you deserve it! Hope you get a chance to do a little driving in the near future, and yes we need a video! :)
Barb-the best part is no one had to borrow your eye brow pencil after trying to start it.LOL.
thanks gary and stovens. trying to get the timing right. neighbor is going to show me this weekend how to use a timing gun. this should be fun
Any update Barb?
it went from being " it`s too cold to work on anything outside "to " it`s too hot to work on anything outside " in one day .. we didn`t get any spring weather .. i have`nt touched my stang in 3 months ..
i agree hoss. right now i am trying to hunt down a timing light. i have a friend that will show me how to use one once i get it. then she should be running alot smoother.
you know i have never owned a timing lite .. i time by ear .. i bring up the timing till i hear engine ping when accelerating then back off till it quits .... for racing pruposes when max compression and race gas is used then dead on timing would be bennificial .... but then maybe that`s why i never won a race 30 years ago when i did such silly things ..
got the timing right. it was still having problems. the neighbor that helped me suggested that i pull all the plugs and check compresion. when we pulled all the plugs he noticed that the #7 plug smelled really strong like gas. he told me to bump it over. gas shot out of the plug hole. my carb shoke was stuck wide open. he fixed that then reset the timing once again. put all the plugs back in and made sure all the wires were in the right order. she fired right up. WOO HOO. scared the daylights out of my girlfriend as my headers are not hooked up to the exhaust. shut her back off as i do not have water from the radiator running to the engine. small hole in my radiator. what is the best product for fixing that?
Great Barb, should be moving under it's own power before too long.
Alumiseal (SP) works sometimes (provided the hole isn't too big) and doesn't seem to plug up the cooling systems.
Of course it's usually not too hard to just pull the radiator and repair the hole. All it takes is some acid core solder, flux and a hand held propane torch.....ready to lean another new skill?????
no mike i am not . lol i will get the alumiseal. thanks mike.
Bars Leak is another alternative.
i got some of that ntf. the heavy duty kind. my neighbor who has done this before said that bar leak will sometimes gum up my cooling system so that is why i am asking you guys.
Yes I use Barrs Leak. Be carful how much you use of any of them as the tend to plug up the heater core.
thanks charlie.
That is great Barb you got it to fire! Just some little stuff to get it to roar and give you the goose bumps! I can hardly wait for you to kick it in the rear for the first time!
me either. rocks the car almost like a dragster. and that is with the engine welded in and at idle. woo hoo.
When you can afford it and get time I would have the radiator cleaned and recored and flush the entire system.
thanks ntf. i will. or save my dollars and get a new one. found one on the net for $260.
Yes ideally either have the radiator repaired at an auto shop or look out for a good second hand one and as NTF says flush the whole system out with the garden hose. Oh don't forget to remove the thermostat and open the heat control so that the water circulates through the whole system.
Vote number 2 for Alumaseal. Years ago when I was trying to keep the 302 in my 27 going for a little longer I developed some radiator leaks from it shaking around. I used Barrs Leaks and later on when I had the radiator reworked the guy said he had to almost chisel the stuff out of the tubes. When I pulled my engine apart the cooling passages in the heads, block, and intake were almost totally closed up with stuff that looked like cement.
I've seen Alumaseal plug up pretty big holes in radiators and not plug up the rest of the system.
Don
Need to put a camera on the dash and point it at your face so we can see your smile!!!!!!
thanks whip and don. i am going with the alumaseal. fort i dont do pictures. too old and beat up. lol
thanks louey. that is alot of good information. had a friend here that recommended the tablets too.
Louey - that stuff is great. Had a headgasget leak 5 years ago in the Toyota truck, and a mechanic friend put some in the radiator, and it stopped the leak, for 5 years now, no problems! I'm pretty sure I put some in my new engine after we fired it up, but I will have to drain the fluid, soon, so I'll do it again, to help with the leaks, good stuff! When we put it in the old truck, he just told us drive the car for a minimum of a half hour after I put it in, and it will circulate everywhere, without plugging things up. He also told us that most car manufacturers were using it right off the assembly line, to fix any assembly leaks. Never had a problem with it yet!
thanks stovens. did not know that.
you aint old or beat up. ive seen you.hahaha. that would be priceless to the first time you jump on it.a vid would be cool!
will see about one today or tomorrow.
okay guys. got the bar leak tablets and was ready to go with the instructions. my neighbor stopped me and told me that i can not run my engine for 15 minutes because my headers are not hooked to my exhaust. that it would ruin my seals. is that true?
I hear that from time to time, but I think it is one of those urban myths. Look at all the cars running around with open headers all the time (my old 23 and my 27, from time to time) I've heard burned valves too, but I think that is in the same category. We'll see what some of the others say though.
Don
He probably just didn't want to listen to the noise. I don't see a problem, someone else might have a different answer.
Barb,
It depends on how long your headers are. Long tube headers are fine but if you are running the shorty headers that are not much longer than a stock exhaust manifold, the issue is when you shut it off. The cold/cool air coming back into the headers could warp a vlave. The long tube headers will heat the air before it reaches the valves.
At least that is what I was always told. I have had brand new engines with long tube headers run for over an hour on first fire up and never had an issue.
I agree with NTFDAY, your neighbor just does not want to hear it. But you have to live next to them. Do you really want to make them mad?
