Looks great Uncle Bob.
I'm rearranging the garage for a new arrival
Doese it have a Hemi in it?
Ken
Thanks for the kind words guys, btw Gary, your stuff is much more impressive.
No Ken, the hemi stays down south for now, this will be something I've wanted for a long time, and has MUCH less hp.:)
I got a whole day in on the Chevette; dont look like I did much but I did get a lot done. I spent the day cleaning and painting engine parts and I started re-dong the previous attempt at mounting a small block. The motor mounts were way too far back and the firewall was butchered pretty bad. I got a tube crossmember from Speedway for the engine; it should help stiffen it up, too. It should start looking better in the next few weeks.
Looks a whole lot better under there!!!! Looks like you have a bit of sheetmetal fabricating ahead of you!!!
Just a bit; maybe I'll leave it like that so I can adjust the distributor from inside the car! How's project Bronco II coming?
Sounds cool! Too bad there's not 30 hours in a day and 9 days in a week, huh Dave? Maybe we'd finish some of these!:D
Yesterday I did manage to get the deck lid cleco'd together....Used the back edge of the metal that was on the glass hatch, then added about 6" to the front of it... Anyway, now I have an '82 'maro with a trunk..... Think I'm just going to get the body tacked together for now, probably going to TIG the rest of the sheetmetal together.... Still haven't got the upholstery back for the pickup yet!!!! Going to have to go find out what the deal is, was supposed to be done a month ago....
How bout a picture of that Maro trunk? I'd like to see that. Sounds like your upholsterer needs a kick in the seat. you'd think they'd be slow this time of year.
I tacked in some more of the old firewall today and mounted the brake pedal assembly and steering column to get an idea of how much room I'm going to have. This is really going to be tight; I dont know how I'm going to make the exhaust work on the drivers side. I'm stuck until I get the motor together and start test fitting. Parts should be here this week.

Well, he's an old cripple like me, so I know how tough it is to get things done.... He'll have it for me, I'm sure.... He does really first rate work though. He did my last '34 coupe I built in '84....Best upholstery trophy in 5 out of 5 shows it was in....
I should be back on the 'maro Monday or Tuesday.... got to finish up some sheetmetal work on the spoiler part of the deck lid then it should be ready for welding and finishing..... Might just make me a 'glass one and shave some more pounds off the car, same with the hood.
I've got a ways to go on my trunk.
I hope to get back on this thing soon.
PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE DUST.

Hey fella's. Its been a while. Been trying to learn a new addition to my job title at work. Nortel DMS100. Tele-swith. It has consumed me. LOL's.
Anyway...Been piddling with the IRS a little....finally got the stiffener plates welded in on the batwings. Turned out nice. Should polish up nice.....unless I get burned out and just bead blast it to match the factory finish. Undecided still :whacked:
Still waiting on my fuel tank. Heck of an ordeal. Fella keeps promising the next day....then the next...then the next. But by gosh....I'm patient! Just hope he gets something mocked up so I can test fit it while the ground is frozen. LOL's.
How's the progress on the Bronco II Dave? Get those big balonies stuffed under it yet? I'll go back and read through the threads. Just kinda sorta missed you guys! :o
Pro.....looking good. I dont mind the dust....work in progress as I see it. I miss the prostreet stuff. Funny....in a town of less than 10,000 at the time....there sure was a bunch of 33x21.50 rolling around town. Of coarse....yours is more purposefully built for the strip...right?
Falcon.....you side step on that thing and you'll blow the rubber plumb off the rims. :D
Uncle Bob....now I'm going to have to refab my motor mounts. Those look way better than mine. BTW....when I donate (your a moderator...correct?)....how much do most folks give....and please dont say $5000...cant do that. Do we have a T-shirt bonus....is what I'm getting at....for a certain given amount. Not that I need it...just wondering. I've finally decided to make CHR my home for good. Got sick of the drama 'elsewhere' from 'someone' we all know here that is a 'mod' over there.
Dave G
Thanks for the nice words on the mounts. As for the moderator thing, not me, they knew better than to give me that much power..............:D If I were in charge of donations though I'd follow the same suggestion I give a potential buyer when I'm selling a car or parts..............just keep peelin' off $100 bills til I say stop!
LOL's. Those $100's go real fast dont they.....:D
Got to suffering from houseitis and had to go to the garage for awhile. Pictures aren't the best quality and there's still a lot of work to be done, but I'm happy with the progress and can see the finished rear end install project. It's a triangulated 4 bar, but will have adjustable front mounts on both the top and bottom bars. The frame ties will be welded to the structure as well as to the seat mount "crossmembers" (or supports, whatever chebbie called them and will stiffen up the car quite well. I'll be adding a 1 1/2" tubular crossmember and drive shaft hoop between the front lower 4 bar mounts. The lower mounts (not shown) will be welded to the same reinforcement plate the main hoop for the roll bar gets welded too, should tie things up in the back end fairly well. The wood pieces in the floor cut outs are the templates for the frame ties. Also included a couple pics of the deck lid with the extension cleco'd in place. Have to do a bunch of welding, grinding, and smoothing on it.....Might end up doing the deck lid and hood in 'glass, have to see how much they weigh, 'glass would be a whole bunch lighter. Probably wait to decide on that till I get the suspension finished up and set the car on the scales to see where I'm at.
Hope to get the interior and all the little odds and ends I need to finish up the pickup this week then I'll have more room to work on the 'maro. Way too crowded in there now!!!! Like I've said before, I miss everything about my big shop except the payments!!!!!!:LOL::LOL:
Anyway, here's some pics of the 'maro I took tonight before I came in the house....
Wow Dave, your making some serious progress there. Your making me feel reeaal lazy. Now I have to get out to the shop and hit the grinder for a while. :D
Dave G
That looks awesome, Dave! This is looking kind of NASCAR; is that where you're going?
not sure where the thing is going to go.... Just thought the new roofline needed a spoiler and the boys at chebbie just had that little plastic pos on there, had to do something bigger then that!!!! Same reason I had to re-do the front and rear end, I just hate plastic parts on the outside of a car!!!!!:LOL::LOL:
Question; if I put an early short style water pump, water pump pulley, and crank pulley on my 79 350, will the pulleys line up? I need some more clearance in the front and I wasn't sure if the thickness of the later model balancer would put the crank pulley out too far.
Thanks, Bob. I was hoping it would work. That should get me another 3 or 4 inches in the front.
That should make your wife very happy.............
OUCH! Walked right into that one, didn't I? She says she loves my "Little Smokey"!:D
LOL's....You Guys
I've just about finished putting the engine back together. It's nothing wild, just a basic rebuild with Speed Pro flat top pistons, a mild Speed Pro street/strip cam, and a set of reworked 883 heads. I'm going to use a painted Edelbrock Performer intake and a Q-jet for induction and a set of early exhaust manifolds. I also have a TH 350 with a 2300 stall and a shift kit to use. I looked at several V8 Chevettes online and it was like they were all stamped from the same cookie cutter; some kind of mag wheels, Chevy orange engine with chrome goodies, headers, Holley, etc, etc....so I though it would be cool to set this up to look like it could have been a factory production V8 car. No chrome, factory style dual snorkel air cleaner, late 70's GM blue engine paint, quiet exhaust, and stock hubcaps. I probably will dump the pizza cutter tires for something a little wider. The car was a factory manual steering, manual brake, no A/C so the only thing on the front of the engine will be an alternator and 1 belt. What do you guys think?
Should be fun...light cars with V-8's always are...,..... Now, you're not going to take it out and hunt down any ricers or anything are you??????;););)
Now what kind of person would I be if I didn't thoroughly test it before I sold it to the next guy?
Falcon I am not riding with you on the first try . But when you get the hang of keeping it straight and about 30 MPH I will get in .:D
30? Come on, Bobby, at least let me get it out of first gear!
Spent the weekend helping put a trunk floor in a '58 Impala, then had one of my sighted welder buds tack the deck lid together.... Have to make some hinges, and the 'maro will have a deck lid that opens. Ordered the NHRA legal tubing for the roll bar today, should be here by Friday I hope....
Sounds like you're full steam ahead on the "Maro, Dave. Cant wait to see the final product!
I am not sure about anybody else but over the holidays excluding Christmas I was in the garage non-stop, got all my brakelines run, rearend with the coilovers in, working on the body and firewall and floor right now, I took a bet that maybe I shouldn't have taken, I told someone at work I would have the car done for the spring car show in the middle of April, Doesn't seem like quite a stretch for most people but I work 2 jobs plus run a small business and that takes up too much of my time.
When you put your firewall in, what gauge of metal do you use and what can you put behind it to support it?, looking for the safest easiest way if that is possible
Not getting old, I AM old!!!!!!!:LOL::LOL: Haven't got in to the expensive parts yet, the sheetmetal and fab work is never all that expensive but it sure as heck is time consuming... Sometimes you can work all week and it doesn't look like you got anything done!!!!!
