".....HEMI has the same meaning as a boat. Break Out Another Thousand....."
Ain't that the truth.......however I'm finding that other lower production (read big inch Caddy, Buick, Olds or Pontiac), or 50-60 year old engines (read small journal Small block like the current 283 project) are not real nice to the bank account either.
.
Mike, you're so right. We've been buying up parts for my Dad's 68 Buick GS400. Buick parts will get ya too. Go figure
Since I'm going to have the frame out from under the body on this thing, I've decided to do away with the rear leaf springs and go with a triangulated 4 link system. Are there any disadvantages to this? I was going to go with normal 4 link, but with triangulated you don't need a track/panhard bar which should free up room for exhaust fitment and such. I think I've really fallen in love with the salt flat type wheel like posted above. I'm leaning towards fully polished, but we shall see. I have to get the frame work done and set the body back on so I can figure out what I can run wheel and tire size wise.
I like those salt flat wheels too!
No comments on the first part of post 284?
I've got triangulated in my coupe.. Love it too!
And I also run the polished Salt Flats from AR..
I can't find anything to complain about on my end.. Go for it.
Thanks 34_40. I've seen a lot of kits for 33-35s, but not many for 36-40. I have found a decent kit though I think.
I agree, my '33 has a triangulated four link and like Mike I have no complaints. If I do another car it will have the same setup as this one. There's just no disadvantage to it, from my perspective.
Some chassis/frames aren't readily compatable with mounting the upper links---might be more related to under floor area of a back seat, but the 2 seater rigs seem to have more room there-
an alternative could be a irs from several of the later series of suvs, etc-------
I'll have to check my floor for clearance and see what it looks like. Thanks for the input guys. That's what I love about this forum.
Other choices ===C4 corvette(92-96), Lincoln, T bird Cougar with IRS, Ford expedition(IIRC) latr Mustang Cobra with IRS,
New Camaro , possibly Viper$$$$$
As the cars became lower ( mid/late 30s) and more rear seat usage, the floor board areas drive line tunnels were manufactured closer to drive line components not leaving much room for the upper bars from a much larger rear (9in Ford , Dana 60,etc) compared to the old narrow torque tube center pinion banjo rears
I'm going to pass on the rear IRS. I have created enough work for myself on this thing.
I found some other wheels that may look good on here and period correct and they aren't priced bad at all. $980 powder coated for a set of 4.
Latest News - Detroit Steel Wheel Co.
I had some money saved up from selling things I had laying it around and I was going to go gang busters buying things for this car. But then reality set in and I decided I had better finish my 72 so I can drive it when my daily driver craps out. But, I should be able to recoop and still work on the 40 before summer.
With this weather you may have a lot of time before summer.
Are you considering the 18" or 20". Good that there are different center selections too. Nice selection of whitewall tires, is that a possibility?
I was thinking 18" in front and 20" in the rear. I probably can't do much until I get the body back on the frame and put fenders on and do some measuring so everything is right. I also have to see what tires will fit as well. I've changed so much on this thing I have no base line anymore.
Hey Ryan, are you still planning to paint the car satin black? What color on the wheels? I think will look pretty cool. Dang, I gotta get back on my '37! I keep getting sidetracked on my truck.....:D
I forgot to add about the white walls, I doubt I'll go white walls. I still am not sold on the steel wheels yet either. I'd really like to see a photoshop of a black 40 with them on it and low to the ground. My big problem is, I like shiny things. So I like to see a visualization before I commit. Haha
Yes I am. I think it's the only feasible option to be able to still do body mods and repair but keep it drivable. If I get it that far this year. If I go with the steel wheels, I thought about having them powder coated chrome? Or a metallic blue as I'm thinking white silver and blue flames this time around.
I currently have my 871 on ebay so I can recoop more money to buy other parts. My goal is to get my 72 drivable. I should be able to buy some parts soon for the 40 if I keep on my selling spree.
These are only 16's & 17's and they aren't steelies but it's low.....lol Twin Turbo 1940 Ford Sedan Jpg Photo 10
Here's another. It has 17's & 18's but I think the tires are too small, especially on rear. I'm also not crazy about these wheels but I'm just throwing stuff out there for ya.....1940 Ford Tudor Sedan Gets Custom Treatment [Video]
Here's one with those other wheels you liked: http://www.barrett-jackson.com/stagi...rofile_Web.jpg
I love the maroon sedan. I doubt mine is that extreme though. Definitely an awesome ride. The black one is awesome too. I wonder what sizes the wheels are? I'm kinda thinking the tires are a bit small, but it still looks good. The black cherry one is super nice too. Those wheels do look nice on it for sure. Thanks for the links and help!
I'm going to add these pictures to the thread for future reference.
Here's the twin turbo car.
Jack, as for now, I doubt mine gets as low as the maroon one. Maybe like the black one, but not slammed. I'd like it to be , but I'm trying to keep the floor and trunk room it currently has. I'm sure the maroon one has lost some real estate. Well, the blower is gone. I think I'm going to buy a Hot Heads Dual Plane Intake with the funds from that. I also ordered an Eastwood tubing bender so I can start on my X member some day. Haha
Okay guys, I can use some input. I'm thinking of having some louvers put in my hood. I've never had any on any vehicle before. With that said, are they a pain due to allowing water on the engine after a wash, or a pita due to drawing too much heat? I'm guessing not, but I figured I'd ask. I can't decide how many and how far to go either. I'm thinking do over the engine area which would be roughly 2/3 of the hood. What are your guys's thoughts? Thanks Ryan.
Well, if you want an honest response......I hate 'em!! Whatever benefit of heat escape they may offer is offset by what a PITA it would be to clean around them, water drips on the engine plus the disruption of the smooth flow of the '40 hood! But other than all that, I suppose they're great! Hahahaha! Obviously, it's your car and I'll follow & applaud your build but I'm just not a fan of louvers. There, I said it.....:LOL::LOL:
Thanks for the response Randy. This is one of theose mods that will be hard to undo, so I'm trying to decide if it's really what I want to do for sure. My first thought was of the water on the engine first thing. I guess it won't be hard to undo as I just have to buy another hood if I decide I don't like them. It's just a thought as of now. The car still needs a lot of other things to get it where you can call it a car again. Haha
Unlike R2.. I like'em....
in someone else's hood! 8-)
Louvers can add to the build look of certain cars - 40 plus Hemi = pure Hot Rod for instance. I have done them in a few cars/trucks and they seem to scream Hot Rod to many people that check the look. I have never had a water drip problem that bothered me but then all were drivers. A simple drip pan under the louvers would solve the drip if it bothered you and you slowed done enough to allow drips, unlikely. For you, you are going to have to have a very good cooling system to begin with, and the compartment is filling up with all that big motor, I would do it for the cooling factor alone. Plus as noted, 40 plus Hemi plus big tires plus louvers all scream Hot Rod.
Very true sir. I'm more than likely going to do it. I just have to figure out how many. I'm really digging the wire wheels from the previous page now too.
Well after pricing chrome center wires, I may be out on them for now.
Have any of you seen the new show on Discovery called Lords of the Car Hoards? I'll be danged if they didn't just do a 40 Ford truck and put those dang chrome wires on it. If I keep seeing them, I may have to sell more stuff.
There are louvers . . . then there are louvers. Hood, roof & tailgate. There was a diverter under the hood louvers to drain moisture and a double roof skin with sealant between the two.
