Maybe I missed something, Ryan, but just curious why you didn't just use the '38 frame and make your modifications to it rather than cut the front off of it and weld to your existing frame?

Randy, the 38 frame had some rot through I found after I got it home. The lower flange was very thin on the rh rear rail just ahead of the rear axle and has what looks like a crack but is a line from thin metal. I figured by the time I fixed that, boxed this frame, and made an X member again, I'd have a whole lot more time in the 38 frame than my 40 frame. All I have to do to the 40 frame is cut off the front rails and reattach the fronts of the 38. Once I get the cuts made, and get the 38 rails lined up, then I can weld them on. I'll be ready to box it and then I can start on the new MII cross member.
Yeah, Ryan, I figured it was something like that but I just hadn't seen where you talked about it. I wish I had a few extra thousands laying around because there's a guy out here who wants to sell a TCI rolling chassis which is already setup with 4 wheel disc brakes, hydraulic clutch & brakes, 9" rear, etc. But, I can't swing it just yet. It would sure save me a lot of time & work trying to make my chassis pretty!
Hope you post lots of pics of your frame build...:D
Well, some good news! I found my sand blaster, and the new package of tips for it. It was in the shop, right by a walk through door. It was actually put away. That's nuts.
Last night I was reminiscing of my child hood remembering how I used to build lego models of this car. For what ever reason, I always built it with a hood scoop. As I was envisioning the old lego car, I saw a late 70's T/A that had a shaker hood scoop. It's funny that shaker scoop is the near same shape as the scoop I had on the lego 40. Is it destiny? :) So I'm seriously considering putting a shaker hood scoop on top of the dual quads on the hemi. What do you guys think? At first I didn't want to cut a hole in my hood. But if I had a supercharger, it wouldn't be a question. I think it will look cool and help set the car apart from most other 40 Fords.
I'm not sure finding a sandblaster is good news, I will be doing a bit of that Saturday and I'm sure looking forward to it as always.:(

Go for the boyhood dream of a scoop! If done right, it really works.
I too am watching for an extra hood to punch a hole in, already have the scoop.
Remember a 40 Willys is so close to 40 Ford sheet metal looks... Look there.
I think if you look closely in your garage you probably have that hood scoop in there!:eek: :LOL::LOL::LOL::rolleyes::p
I found a pic last night of this coupe with a mopar shaker scoop. I really like that scoop, I just think it might look too "ricer". It looks out of place but maybe with the hood and scoop painted gloss black, it would look better? I'm not saying it doesn't look nice on that coupe, I'm just not sure it fits mine. I'm really leaning towards the 77-81 TA scoop. It isn't huge, and has a line down the middle that I can line up with my hood molding.
There's no turning back now! After I get the rails blasted, it'll be fit up time and then weld time! I think I might reinstall the inner pieces too. I have a plan to sleeve the inside where the cut I made is. I'll weld the sleeve in the frame so there is more structure and this will give me a place to rejoin the original inner pieces too.
I placed one rear fender on. I should be able to stuff some tire in there! There's 14" from the fender edge to the inner wheel house.
In that first pc of the Mopar Shaker, I don't see it as a good fit either.. I'd be curious to see it 180 degrees from where it is now.. HMmmmm.
I'd say the same thing with the T/A scoop....
With the TA scoop, I'm thinking of putting it back wards from how the TA's had them and maybe modifying the inlet. I saw a polished aluminum cobra jet scoop on flebay, but it might be too large.
I have one that I cut the inlet out of when I was 18 yrs old thinking it was cool, now I would like it back to original. If you have an unaltered one I would love to do a swap with you if your interested. I never thought about turning one backwards for a scoop, I think that would look pretty good.
When my scoop arrives, we could swap if you'd like? I purchased one off ebay and it is in good shape. I think reversed will give it a cool look and it would be like ram air.
Sounds good, when you get it you could show some pics and I can get a few more of mine. If it is a pita for you or you would like to cut yours up different than mine that is no problem. I have enough things going on where I shouldn't be thinking about redoing my hood scoop.
I didn't get anything done to the 40 this weekend. I got rained out on sand blasting. So, I'll have to wait until the end of the week for that. It is raining here and sleeting tonight into tomorrow. I did get sand and a new hood for the blaster. Too bad yesterday when I went to get my generator from my shop, I found my old hood. I guess I'll return the new one and get something else I can use.
I did finally get my other Excursion I have been owed for about 3 years. I have it listed for sale and can hopefully buy more parts for the 40 once it is gone.
Looking great, I dig the TA scoop idea!
I hear you on the rained out front. I actually finally got some time to figure out why my relatively new Harley battery has been flashing yellow on the battery tender. Turns out the negative charging lead broke off it's connector on the negative terminal. Then after fixing that managed to polish the oxidized lights on my MR2 and My 1998 Toyota 4x4. Started out wanting to get the 48 out of the garage and idling, but dealt with the more immediate issues first! All in all a good day the yellow light no longer flashing on the battery tender, nice solid green now. But priorities seem to stimmy fun along the way, and bleed the bank! :)
Beautiful high 60s here in GA, so I broke out the chief for a putt.. Must be contagious: my negative cable was loose too, it nearly melted the terminal off my $300 glass matt batt.
This morning I tried sandblasting but the silica sand I got from Menards has too many rocks in it so I'll have to make a better screen set up for a funnel. The rocks in the sand kept plugging the tip on the blaster. What a PITA!
I'm looking for a floor shifter that would have came in a mopar with a 727, A518, or 46rh/47rh. Does anyone have any ideas? The early 70s stuff is kind of pricey. I could go with an aftermarket shifter, but I figured if I can save some dough on a junkyard part, I might as well.
In case anyone needs it, here is a wheel offset chart I found in my searches.
Wheel Specs | Wheel Specialists, Inc.
I was looking to see what my options are in a 17x9 wheel in the Rev Classic 100 and there are only 2 different offsets. 0 and 12. 12 definitely won't work. Hopefully the 0 will. I'll have to wait until the rear end is back in to get that info.
Thanks for the wheel chart, I've been thinking about buying some torq thrust rims for the 53 if the budget allows, and I was about to start the whole measuring offset backspacing thing.
Ryan as far as a shifter I’m not real sure what’s out there as far as 80s up but the mid-late 60s is pretty limited. Here is a link to the most common one. IMO they are overly complicated and not necessarily a good fit in a lot of cars due to requiring a console for the linkage at the bottom of it.

I have used these shifters in the past and have been pretty happy with the results. It usually takes a bit of custom fabrication but for under $100 new I can live with that.

The only real complaint I’ve had with them is the lack of detents on the shifter….except for park (it relies on the detents in the valve body). Once the shifter is installed and adjusted it’s pretty easy to take a die grinder and ass them however.

The pointed end of the Mopar shaker looks out of place given the shape of the hood it's on.. Wondering if a Mustang shaker (flat front vs the Torino shaker) would look any better for what you have planned....

Mike, thanks for that. I was looking last night and found that you're exactly right that they are pretty limited. I did find this one last night but I'm trying to see why it's so cheap.

Robert, the mopar scoop is out. The TA scoop is my plan, but I am watching a nice polished scoop like you have shown. My only concern is that it may be too large compared to the hood of the 40. I used to know a guy that had 4-5 of these laying around. It would be nice to have one to set on the hood to see how it fits.
Ryan-some of those wheel specs are in MM--------aprox 1/2 inch
This morning I blew a lot of dirt and debris off the 354. I removed the stock intake because I have no need for it right now. I also bolted on the 392 water cross over I got last year for it. I also test fitted a distributor I got about 3 years ago that I thought wouldn't fit. Turns out, it fits just fine. It is a new HEI style and I only have to get a drive coupler for it so it will be a drop in replacement.
This morning I cleaned my edges and ground on a bevel on the edges of the rails. Then fit each frame rail and measured and clamped each one on. Tacked them on, took more measurements, and then welded them on. I then put my make shift dolly under the back of the frame and the engine hoist up front. I drug the car outside, covered the front of the body with plastic, and soda blasted the inside portions of the new rails that were the worst. It was pretty nice out. It is in the high 40s now. Darn nice for January! I'm going to get some rust converter paint and paint the inside to help seal them up. I might use weld through primer since I will be welding the boxing plates on. That might be better than a regular paint. The last pic is just showing the weld from the back side. Full penetration.
That's great progress, nice to see it moving ahead again.
Do you intend to add any plating over your weld joint?
Yes, I'm going to make a sleeve, like a [ , and plug weld and end weld it where I can. I was going to put the parts of the original x member pieces back in the front part as well. But I'm thinking they won't do much except add some weight since I am boxing the frame any how. I haven't decided if I will need to plate the outer part yet or not. I wouldn't think it would need it but I'm open to advice. :)
I think I would plate the outside and make the plate in the shape of a diamond. This is much lighter duty but on loader frames and truck frames, a square plate or a vertical weld will develop a vertical crack right next to the original weld.
Times 3. You could even do a "more decorative" shape just to dress it out. It will add structure / strength and help carry any flex load.
I think I'm going to do a flat plate with a fish mouth on each end. I didn't have time to mess with it today. Maybe next week. :(
No real pic worthy progress on the 40. I marked out the inner lips of the 38 rails and started making new boxing plates for the inside. I dug out my welder series cross member and started getting things ready for when it's time to install that. I've got to finish a huge PITA truck before I get to work on this much more. :(
Hey Bud, you made some progress and now seems you have a goal to work towards, don't sweat it... it'll come together. It should look sweet on the "TOUR"!
I have a lot of people on bookface thinking I'm putting a 7.3 in it. It's pretty funny.
I've been collecting some parts for the engine. I had 0 small cfm carbs laying around, but did manage to get 2 600 cores, and 1 390. I'm searching for one more. Anyone have any 8007 Holleys they want to sell?
I did get the new to it front frame rail inner lips trimmed. I also cut out the boxing plates for the front too. I cut out the gussets for the outside of the frame also. I might just take Sunday off from working on trucks to work on it. Everyone needs some time off right?
Lookin' nice.
Those big valve covers always bring a smile don't they??? 8-)
