Good grief, the awsome looks of that motor just trumped my W motor's looks hard core:LOL:
The W motors definitely have a cool look too though!
One night this past weekend, I cleaned and vacuumed out the 40. I sat in one of my later model bucket seats to get an idea if they're going to work. I think they will work with a riser under them. These are power and heated, so they should help with long rides. Eventually they will need recovered. This is the worst of the 3 I have. Of course, the back seat isn't going to work with what I have planned. So I'm going to have to research the best way to build a back seat. I was thinking a fiberglass base covered in foam etc, but I'm thinking that is too much work for what I plan to do.
Ryan, Check out Sid Chavers videos for seat & upholstery work, worth every penny!
Thanks Matt. I will look into that.
I did manage to get another 390cfm Holley. I'm still on the hunt for another 8007 though. I'm also thinking about getting a pair of SS cheapy ebay headers. The mild steel ones I have has a weird tube through flange set up that makes me leary. The SS ones are all flat which seems like a better way to go.
Looks good so far, what rear seats are in it now? If your like me you'll change your mind on the seats 3 times before your done, I have a nice painted center console in my garbage pile
“….Good grief, the awsome looks of that motor just trumped my W motor's looks hard core…..”
“…..The W motors definitely have a cool look too though!.....”
Just this old mans opinion (so you know what that’s worth  ) but the 3 most impressive looking engines to come out of Detroit (in no particular order) were the Ford flathead, the Chrysler Hemi and the Chevrolet W motors......especially when they are dressed up with speed parts.
Looks VERY good Ryan.
Are you going to try the HotHeads in-line carb adapters or mount the Holleys’ sideways? If you’re going in-line it will be interesting to see how much distributor clearance you end up with.
I started out with a set of the chromed steel cheapie headers when I did the mockup on the 37. The steel set had a pretty badly warped flange and although I suspected it might pull straight when I tightened the bolts, I ended up biting the bullet and sprung for stainless set off of E Bay too, I’m really pretty happy with them.
If you don’t mind a suggestion or 2 on the headers here are a couple of tips.
Spring for a set of the solid copper header gaskets. Changing out a blown paper gasket in car is not going to be fun with the engine in car (those wide heads make it a real PIA to access the bolts if you’re running a full hood. If the bolts loosen with the copper gaskets, it just tighten them down again.
If at all possible use studs and nuts (like the factory did) instead of bolts to hold the headers on. The reason is the holes in the block are tapped straight into the water jackets. If you have to pull the headers after the engine is filled with coolant and you use bolts it gets real messy with all the coolant shooting out of the side of the engine. I know this first hand as I had to change out 2 of the studs for bolts on mine in order to get enough clearance between the engine and frame to pull the drivers’ side header.
It looks like your steering column comes out a lot lower and to the left than mine in the 37 does so hopefully you won’t run into all the twists and turn to connect to the steering rack/box that I did.
.
Thanks for the info Mike! That makes me feel better about the ebay headers. My plan is to run the hot heads adapters to run them in line. It will be really close for sure. I can change my steering column height now. I cut that hole and mounted the column with the old hack mess up front. It will all be new and the cross member height will probably be different. That might even change the engine height too. I'm not sure yet due to all the unknowns. I'm definitely excited to get the front end all done so I can get the rear suspension positioned, and get it as a roller again.
I said to heck with working on other people's stuff this weekend. I cleaned up the garage a bit and pulled stuff from around the 40. I only had a few hours each day to actually work on it, but made some progress on it none the less. I need to keep plugging away to get the suspension in it so I can move on to engine/trans placement so I can make the body and frame be one before May. I got the gussets put on the outsides of the frame rails, welded the inside of the joints where needed, and coated the inside of the rails with some rust converter just in case. I have the RH boxing plate welded on. Now time to trim the LH one and get it put on. Then I can set the body where it needs to be and get the frame set to a ride height to do the front cross member install.
There ya go! Good to hear you've made some time for yourself. Bet it feels good too!
Looks nice.
Since I'm feeling like I'm actually getting some things done, I kept working on the 40. I got the LH boxing plate(s) almost all welded in. I took my daughter to school and played with her at the playground. Then I came back and worked on bolting the body to the frame. I had to run to the hardware store to get some bolts. I have it bolted in with 4 bolts right now. 2 at the front, and 2 at the rear. I'm going to have to work on getting it shimmed correctly as the doors aren't wanting to shut. It was sort of this way before, but way worse now. I put the front sheet metal on there and one rear fender so I can get my axle center lines marked so I can do my suspension installs.
Does the front of the hood need to come up more? It looks like it is down hill to me. This isn't my ride height. I just ran out of time before I had to leave to go to work. I'll work on it more in the morning. Please excuse my mess. I have been working on this and side tracked cleaning right now.
You can see my youngest has been helping me. He was driving to get parts in the pic. Haha
Mine was a Standard and yours is a Deluxe, the grill on a 40 Standard closely resembles the grill on a 39 Deluxe, 1 piece versus 3 piece and from what I see your front sheet metal needs to come up a tad. I wouldn't worry about it until you get the body on the frame permanently. As far as I'm concerned that's the most beautiful 2 dr sedan Henry ever built.
Those look like real nice welds and you got quite a way the way it looks to me.I like how you curved the plates. Sounds like you have about the same deadline as I do. Glad to hear that your taking time out for your kids, I miss those young years. I'm also for shooting for May, probably will be June but willing to accept July, however I will settle for August, Although it would make a nice anniversary present for my wife in Sept. :D
This morning I had the boys with me. I had to go remove a valve body from a trans to sell to get more hot rod parts. While I was there, I grabbed my running boards. I took the boys to get breakfast and when we got back, they "helped" me on the car. My wife is going to love me. She already shakes her head. :p
I put the LH running board on and lowered the car to where I decided can be the ride height. It isn't too low, but close I'm guessing. It has 5 3/8" in between the ground and the bottom of the front of the running board. And 5 1/2" in the rear. Now I can measure my well openings, get the axle center lines marked out, get the frame leveled, and begin the new MII cross member install.
Yep. that would make me smile too see her sitting that sweat. You want to be able to drive her without the constant worry about clearance issues. You could always bag her up and sent her down to me to look after once you have it back together of course. That would help tidy the workshop up somewhat.
Ryan, (to my eye) the hood is good.. the whole rear needs to rise up an inch ( or so)... but that could just be the picture too.?.?.?
Nice to see the progress, and getting time with the kids. priceless!
Keep up the good work 8-)
Thanks. I don't remember a lot of stuff from the time that I was the same age as my sons. I do remember little bits and pieces though. Hopefully this time with them will keep them in the garage and have a want to learn as they get older. The youngest was under the car on my creeper the other morning with a squirt gun pretending it was a drill. Helping me drill holes since that was what I was doing. I have extra safety glasses and ear protection for them. Finding little people sized PPE is pretty tough though.
Ok, back to the car. Thanks to you guys, I have been picking up tricks and buying small stuff to help my work be more accurate. This morning I got the frame as close to level as it wanted to get. **) I found the center of the front wheel wells, and got the frame marked out. I even used some of my spray on lay out fluid for the first time. Right now my axle center line is 18" in front of the front of the fire wall. On both sides. I'm pretty happy about that. Both sides matched up. I'm going to measure from some other points to make sure my marks are as close to perfect as I can get. Tomorrow I'll remove the front fenders and grill. Then it will be time to weld up my cross member and then fit it.
What to you guys think? Should I make the bottom of the front cross member be level with the bottom of the middle of the frame? Or have it higher a little to make going over speed bumps and intersections easier? I just realized that I will have to remark my lines on the frame. I used a square from the floor up to mark the lines. I'll just need to use a different square to make the lines square with the frame instead of the floor since I know the frame isn't level right there due to the frame kick up and down etc.
I also stuck one of the tires I have for the rear under it to see if it would fit. The tire has room all around it so hopefully the wheel and rear end combo can be achieved to accommodate the tires.
"...... Finding little people sized PPE is pretty tough though.........."
Ain't that the truth!!!!! I run into the same thing with my grandsons, gloves in a small size can sometimes be a challenge too. Besides the places grownups buy the PPE, you might also check shooting supply places. I envy you having the kids out there.......now that school is back in session I don't see the grandkids quite as much. Cade's at the point where the computer is more interesting than Grandpa now and I suspect it will get worse when he discovers girls
Looks like your getting there on the frame and suspension.
.
Nice work there Mr. Ryan..
Thanks for the update and pics too..
I had two auto darkening helmets for when my kids used to come in the shop, before they became " cool " I made my cross member just a tick lower than everything else, like the oil pan. Right or wrong thats how it is now.
I'm just going to put the engine way high so the air cleaner sticks through the hood. That ought to do.
Seriously just kidding.
Cars become quite interesting to a young man, just about the time girls do. Or at least: when they realize that girls like guys with cool cars.
My guess is that grandpa won't be outer of the picture yet.
I wasn't able to get a lot accomplished this weekend. I finally sold off the 2001 Excursion I had setting in the drive way. But, the guy whom purchased it wanted me to deliver it, or he couldn't buy it. He offered to give me $115 to haul it the 75 miles to Garden Grove. I didn't really want to, but I really wanted it gone. He was the only one who actually showed up with cash to buy it. So I agreed.
A few weeks ago my middle brother borrowed my trailer to take his 3 bay Matco tool box to his job in Oskaloosa. He told me then that the trailer was blowing fuses on our Mom's truck. Of course he didn't look into it as to why it was blowing them. Haha Yeah. Apparently when my youngest brother borrowed the trailer, the LH brake/turn light was out. So instead of going and getting a new lamp, he presidential solutioned a marker lamp in there. Not only was the lamp the incorrect shape, he just twisted the wires, and zip tied them together. No tape, no protection. I wonder why it was shorting inside the pocket? Not only was that jacked, due to the continuous shorting, the trailer plug got hot and ruined it too. So I replaced the connector, and installed some expensive truck lite LED's to replace the old lamps. I've been wanting LED's back there for a while. But I would have rather not spent the money on the trailer now. I sucked it up and did it seeing how I do use it and it needs to be safe. I told my wife I'm about ready to sell this goose neck trailer and get a pintle hitch trailer since no one I know has a hitch for one. That may keep them from borrowing it. Nah, they'll just want to steal my hitch too.
With that done, I loaded the wife and kids and we began the trek. Everything went well and on the way back we were able to stop at a great restaurant in Osceola Iowa. It was really good. I told the family when the 40 is done, we'll have to drive down for their town car show and eat at the restaurant again.
Saturday was a no progress day for the 40. Sunday we went grocery shopping and I took the family out for breakfast. I was able to get the front suspension cross member put together and welded up. I also had the help from the boys to remove the front sheet metal off the car. I started making my marks for the cross member and the upper hats. Hopefully this week I can get the front cross member installed. That will be a huge step forward for this car.
Oh yeah, we did get more white stuff, and I managed to get the stacks set in the blue Ford. The laundry list is getting smaller. Hopefully the owner will be showing up with lots of C notes soon.
Hey my thumb has looked like that a time or two!!:LOL:
.
That sounds like my trailer. everyone else uses it more than me. Since we moved I forgot to renew the registration... so it's been pulled all over creation and it isn't registered! OOPS!:D
Last guy who used it complained the lights weren't working, so I asked did you fix'em? Of course he says no!! SO I says .. if you weren't worried about that then I guess you didn't care that it wasn't registered!:eek::LOL::eek::LOL:
Do you like the new trailer lights? Expensive?
I do like the new trailer lights. I put LED in most of the marker lights back when we were dragging it all over the mid west. The tail lights never got replaced because they kept working I suppose. Yeah, they were expensive. The 2 lights, pig tails, and tax, was around $140. I self tapped them in but will put rivets in them later on.
Crikey but that sounds like my big tandem trailer too!
Someone would want to borrow it, I'd lend it, and when I wanted it I'd have to go looking for the blasted thing. Bob had lent it to Jim, who'd lent it to Paul, who'd lent it to Bruce, who'd lent it to David, and so on and on...
When I'd finally find out where it was I'd have to repair a puncture, a broken tail light, the plug because someone had neglected to plug it in and had dragged it and so on and on...
I finally fixed that.
A mate of mine owned the local garage, so I stabled it there, and painted on the side: '$50 per day trailer hire.'
Bryan, (my mate who owned the garage,) took 10% of that, and charged out the hirage fee, did any repairs, and charged out any damage to those that damaged it.
And I knew where to find the damned thing and at least got beer money out of it!
It worked well until some clown burnt it out. I actually felt sorry for him; he had his entire household goods on it...beds, linen, furniture, fridge, tv, tool boxes, bikes...the lot.
Everything he owned.
Bryan and I went to see him. "It can't have been us that set in on fire," he said, "we didn't throw any cigarette butts out the window; the windows were all wound up 'cos we had all our chickens in the car with us, and if we'd wound the windows down they would've flown out."
I couldn't look at Bryan. 'Cos I knew if I looked at him I would've burst into uncontrollable laughter.
300 miles with a car full of chickens and kids?
It doesn't bear thinking about!
But I still felt sorry for the man, and told him we'd reimburse his $50 for the hirage.
I didn't care. The trailer was well insured for more than it cost me to build it.
That is craziness right there. Kids are one thing, but chickens too....... Nah, they'd be in a box duct taped on the trailer some where!
I wonder who that guy made mad, and if that was why they were moving in such a hurry the way it sounds?
kinda makes you ask... "You know you're a redneck when"???:LOL:
I'm sorry, I'm just thinking about the Fireman who showed up to a burning trailer and a car full of chickens **)
He was a redneck alright; even more so than I.
He was living in a rented house just south of Auckland and had been given a job just south of Opunake (which is ten miles from where we live,) and a house went with the job. He was living pretty well hand-to-mouth, absolutely broke (we've all been there,) and to save money on a removal truck hired my trailer. (It was a pretty big trailer, carried 120 conventional hay bales easily; that's a bit under 4 tons.)
There wasn't just a burning trailer the Fire Brigade had to contend with, they were on an uphill incline when they disconnected it, didn't put the brake on, it rolled backwards bouncing and swerving and started another four or five fires on the side of the road on its way downhill. With approaching traffic swerving all over the place in complete panic.
I'm told it did a couple of 360 degree turns on its wee run...it's quite a long hill.
it would've been bloody hilarious to watch.
Enough!
Sorry for hijacking your thread!
Johnboy, wow, I bet that was a mess! No biggie on the hi-jacking. It is a nice twist here.
Ryan, You got Boxers????
That's the only dogs I've ever owned. I love them I got a bloodline right now I have 9 Champions in.
My records go clear back to 1968 on their Bloodline. my last male I bought out of Florida is the sweetest male I have ever owned.
But we have two acres for them to run, have had a lot of coyote's out here running around. They get peoples small dogs out here all the time.
I only let mine out in pairs just to be safe because I have seen them travel in packs of 10 to 12 before but they usually give my property a wide birth.
I think any of mine would be able to handle 2 by them selves but any more and I 'll let my whole pack out on them. Here is a couple of my pup's in the link.
I didn't know you owned Boxers too, great minds and all that. HA! HA! HA! LOL!!!

Very nice Boxers you have there! No, I don't have any boxers. My Aunts have had several over the years though. One of them has one that has congestive heart failure now and a lot of muscle issues, and hip issues. They are really good dogs.
