I gotta be straight with ya, I think what you said can be done and it would be unique, but those bat wing air filters would have to be pretty expensive before I would go through the work you explained. On another note, he has 150 old lawnmowers? And does this mean your going to sell me that T/A shaker you have ?
The T/A Shaker I have got smashed in shipping and I got stuck with all of the extra pieces to it for no extra charge.... I haven't seen any bat wing air cleaners for less than a grand. I've been looking for a while.
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...eaner&_sacat=0
I'd like to make it look similar to the black one but we'll see.
$1000 bucks, holy crap! Didn't know they were that expensive! Ok, I'm on board with it now.Good eye on the belt cover.
Excellent idea! Everyone will wonder where in the heck did that air box come from. More power to ya.
looks like it is going to be heavy. Nothing the hemi can't handle, I'm sure.
Cool project, keep us updated
Reminds me of my 73 dodge charger: to get RT grill and headlights, it was cheaper to get a whole car. You can't touch a complete RT grill assebly for under a grand.
Last week one day, I had to work a split shift. So I started the air cleaner for the 40. I made the lower pieces tall so I can trim them to get the final height of the air cleaner after the engine is in place. I also need to figure out the air cleaners before I set the height because I don't want the air cleaners on the valve covers. Still a lot of work left to go on it but I think it is looking cool so far.
Looks good Ryan. I think the originals were a bit narrower but the shape is right on.
.
sorry double post.
.
Looking good, you sure do have a variety of stuff in the garage, don't you love remodel jobs
Yeah, everything is in the garage that shouldn't be in there. I shouldn't cry though. I was lucky to get a place with a garage in our price range. I didn't think that was even an issue until we started looking. I have started cleaning my shop and storage unit at my parent's so I can organize parts better. I'm trying to get ready for when the Buick gets torn down.
My brother just moved into a new to him house and he's had an extra washer and dryer for a while. He was going to bring them for a while. Well, he brought them so in the garage they went. Wouldn't you know it but 2 days later our washer crapped out. So now I need to get the dryer switched out, in my spare time. Then I can take the old ones to the mission and they will repair them if needed and resell them.
.
I'm on the fence. First I thought that having it in an enclosure would hurt power. But then I got real and realized that the big HP 392's in the Chrysler 300s had these so I doubt they would rob horsepower. So, I wouldn't mind trying to mimic an original and have the media covered. Also, I think it might actually be a good idea to have the filters draw the air from the top of the lid instead of the bottom so the engine isn't pulling hot air in right off the heads. i'm not sure it will matter with a hood on and setting in traffic though?
I also thought about just having a 7"x3" or so filter under each wing and call it good. The original style with enclosed elements might look better or more nostalgic though?
I agree about not pulling air off the bottom near the heads. If you made a metal cylinder hanging down for looks, you could slot or lover the top part of it for air access and that should work ok. Just a suggestion, you have so many ways to go now. Look at some old pickup oil bath ones for inspiration perhaps.
Ok, time to think out of the box.
How about using 57 Chevrolet heater boxes hanging down with the scoops facing forward?
There is one on my Craigslist for $30. You might dig around and see what you come up with.
Place a cylinder filter inside.
I think that idea could be a winner!
Thanks Scooting! I think that could work out pretty sweet! I'm going to have to dig up 2 of those. That's better than the vent cap I picked up this weekend to see if I liked it.....
Since we're on the subject of the 40, I think I might pull the trigger and get FItech for it now instead of later. When I was building the air cleaner I couldn't get over how close the 2 carbs are together, and how much fun it will be to change a float or change jets when it's all together. I don't mind working on it, but this sure brings back memories of the 2 carbs I had on my tunnel ram. I sure want to drive this with less hassles.
I'm also thinking about trying to get the vintage air compact instead of the mini. I've heard the mini's don't cool well in a sedan. Anyone have any thoughts or experience on that?
Hi Ryan,
I don't know the physical size of the heater fan boxes but hope they would be close to what you need.
Just trying to stretch the mind to different possibilities.
The injections that look like carbs are becoming better priced and make them tempting, huh?
On the air, When I did mine I did not have much spare change and was feeling frugal. The kits were priced above what I wanted. One good thing if you go to a local dealer, they will have fiberglass reproductions of the under dash units which they will let you borrow for a test fit. Easy to grab a couple versions and see for yourself how they will fit.
My unit, i purchased the out front radiator heat exchanger made by Be Cool off ebay. The same size fits a 55 Chevrolet in the books if I remember right. (Worth knowing at swap meets or closeouts.) I am happy with it. The sanyo compressor, again from ebay but new - saved some real money on that. Now inside the passenger compartment, I looked at all the manufacturers and elected to go with an underdash unit. I did not want the chrome 50's replacement look but wanted it to blend in. I elected to buy an underdash evaporator that showed nothing but black vents for about $75. Had to find some bits and pieces (spal switches, make my own coolant lines) but overall am very happy with the performance. Running at 120 outside temps in Palm Springs or 122 in Sedona AZ we never have moved the control from it's lowest position. At that point the car is comfortable overall. Speed two will blow up the skirts and freeze things. Speed three, you will want to roll the windows down for heat. My setup is not as pretty as some but it sure will outperform any of them. (Happy wife, good trip.) Don't be afraid to try your own ideas but then you are good at that.
If you're asking for opinions, what you posted won't cut it. It doesn't have the same "feeling" as what Scooting posted.
Just my two cents..
Thanks Scooting. I forgot I think I have a heat exchanger saved in my ebay favs that you gave me a link to. I definitely am not opposed to piecing a kit together since I won't be able to get brackets from any of them I'm sure. And, yes, the prices are not bad at all especially for a single throttle body setup. I sold some stuff and am trying to make smart parts purchases to get the 40 closer to a complete car. Haha The first thing I thought was, it is finally time to get my 671. But then somewhere inside I heard, yeah, that'll be just as streetable as the dual quads. Right now i'm just reading and watching videos on the few who offer dual quad EFI set ups. I thought about going multi port, but if i do that this thing may go from mild to wild. I don't need all that and have to keep myself in check. Haha The worst thing I see with FItech so far is good luck getting someone to answer their phones. That doesn't thrill me too well and i haven't even purchased one yet.
 I just picked one of those up to see if I could make them work before I saw what Scooting posted. I will be taking the tin can strainer back.
“……I had thoughts of purchasing all hot heads brackets and pullies a few months ago. Then I came back down to reality……”
I hear you Ryan. I’m using the HH timing cover and lower double pulley and short BB water pump on the Hemi in the 57. I groused about the cost 10 years ago and they sure haven’t come down in price.
This is what I’m using for pulleys and brackets on my 37.
I’m using the stock early HEMI timing cover and Long BB Chevy water pump.
The upper pulley is a two groove SBC unit…..I’m using an original but the aftermarket chrome 2 grove units will also work and may save you some time hunting for an original. If you do eventually do go with the Hot Hemi heads stuff, this pulley will also work with their thin timing cover/lower pulley set up and is a lot cheaper than the HH aluminum one. The lower pulley I’m using is a 3 groove BB Mopar unit but the easier to find 4 groove unit will also work. Due to space limitation I’m using the 3 groove unit because I’m running a flex fan bolted directly to the WP pulley. If I use the 4 groove lower pulley it will require a 1” fan spacer. If you have problems finding a 4 groove let me know, I have a spare I can send you.
For an alternator bracket I’m using a modified late 60’s early 70’s Corvette/Chevy truck bracket. Years ago I could buy these new from the dealer for $12.00, the last time I checked they were getting $60.00 for them. If you can’t find one off a truck (or have one left over from your smoky old vette  ) let me know I think I have a spare.

The mods to get it on the Hemi were pretty simple, basically trim the end, and drill a hole so it could bolt to the water crossover tube. As I recall a needed a couple of washers on the back side of one hole to get it to sit square.

I’m using the same bracket on the 57 so I know it will also work with their timing cover/pulley set up if you go that route later. The biggest concern I had with this set up (and it’s the same if you use the HH stuff) is that the belt really doesn’t have much of a contact patch on the WP pulley. It’s not a problem if you are running AC as you also have a second belt that also goes around the WP pulley.
For the PS pump and bracket I’m using a Federal pump and brackets from a late 60’s BB Mopar. This may be the hardest part to find. I think this set came off a 440 powered 69 Chrysler but I’m not real sure. If you don’t have any luck at the local bone yards you might check on E Bay….but keep in mind most mopar guys think their stuff is gold  As simple as the bracket is you might be able to fabricate the whole thing out of a couple pieces of flat stocl. If you do find one on the car you will probably want to snag the pump and at least part of the pressure hose with the metal pipe on it.

I ended up narrowing the bracket so that it would fit the PS boss on the BB Chevy water pump.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4496/...06180995_z.jpgMB 1 by M Patterson, on Flickr
I had to fabricate a bracket for the bolt that tensions the PS pump.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4459/...38ed18a7_z.jpgT B by M Patterson, on Flickr
That bolted between an alternator bolt and one of the timing cover bolts (the old Hemi used 5/16 timing cover bolts and I replaced the bolt with a stud and nut to hole the timing cover and then slipped the bracket over stud.

When it was all done the front belt goes around the 3rd grove of the crank pulley, the outer grove of the WP pulley and the PS pump pulley. The belt now has a pretty good amount of wrap around the WP pulley.
The alternator is driven from the inner grove of the WP pulley and that belt does NOT go around the crank pulley.

Then all you need is a custom pressure hose to connect it to the rack. I had all the pulleys and brackets on hand so I have virtually no money tied up in it…..your results may vary ;)

Wow, lots of great information Mike P. I am impressed. I like to see workarounds especially on brackets. Good Stuff.
I'm really liking this build Ryan. I just read the whole thing. My first car was a low mile 1939 Deluxe 2 door with a '55 265 Chevy on an Offy adapter in 1964. My second car was a 1946 Ford Deluxe Club Coupe with a '55 hemi out of a Chrysler 300 complete with original dual fours and dual point ignition on Hurst mounts. It looks like I should have kept them both and put the hemi in the '39. I have that same alternator mount on my truck. I ground it smooth and polished it then painted it with Eastwood Titanium. Looks great.
Tom
Can’t beat the look of those mile wide Hemi heads; nice work.
Thanks Pat.
Ryan, I posted this for Mike and then thought of you. https://www.ebay.com/itm/112642692463?ul_noapp=true
Thanks Ken. It will be interesting to see how high that goes. Dual quad stuff for these has been bringing more than new stuff would. Pure craziness.
My good friend started working on his 51 Chevy the past few months. I've sold him some parts for it and now he's getting a good bit done to it. I had plans to start working on my 76 K30 so I could try to sell it this summer. But after walking past the 40 last week I decided maybe it needed time put into it instead. This summer should be a car year instead of a truck year. I've got a truck to drive in the summer.
This isn't much new progress.
I found my rear axle to be to the right too much so I had to cut off my tack welds and start over. I got the rear axle re positioned and the right side bars are back on. My top bar still went on without any mods so I really wonder if one of the kids just bumped the rear wheels and I didn't need to cut anything off and redo it. Oh well, it is half done now. I'm going to do the LH side in the morning so I can keep going on it for a change.
I'm having trouble uploading pics but I think that is because my new phone takes too large of pics. So I need to figure that out. While I was under the car I noticed the X member I made actually landed where the body mount floor bolt holes go. I don't think I planned for that but glad it worked out that way. Haha
Good to see progress on the 40 for a change. 8-)
Keep it up, it's looking good from here.
All 4 bars are tacked on. I will have to make gussets for the upper mounts as they aren't done. I will weld it all after the body is off the frame. I have to cut the floor now so the rear end will clear it. Next is to decide how far I want the rear suspension to drop, and I have to do my air bag mounts. I should get my engine and trans mounted too. You can see I will probably have to modify my floor because the drive shaft might interfere with the floor due to the offset pinion of the Explorer 8.8. I will work through it because I want this driving this summer.
I was going through my photobucket account trying to decide the easiest way to get the pics off there and saw a couple pics of the 40 I don't think I shared before. That white ford is my old 92 F350 I built and then sold to my brother.
On the bridge is an awesome shot.
Agree about he bridge photo. That is nice.
I am having trouble pulling my gas tank down to replace it with a larger poly one.
I have pushed it to the drivers side and need about another 1/4 inch for the passenger
side to fall. Got any suggestions?
