1940 Ford Tudor Build Thread

Sounds like a busy weekend. I know how things you need to do can back up when you're in the middle of a project (and the shop ending up like a bomb went off :LOL: ) That's where I was Saturday when I got the 37 going. Sunday was pretty much cleaning the shop and figuring out the order of stuff I need to do other than work on the 37 for a while (top coat the roof on the shop, service both the wifes' vehicles check a few things on the ram 50 etc etc).

You're work on the 40 looks great by the way.

Here is a pic of the LH rear wheel and tire. Hopefully it fits because I'm stuck with it unless I change wheels. They only offer 2 off sets. This should work. **) (i'll make it work) :LOL:

Here is the 39 I robbed the headliner side retainers from. This poor car was so rotten.... My youngest had fun in it trying to get the key out of the steering column. We both did not win that battle. :eek:

Heck Ryan, that tudor would be an easy re-builder down here in New Zealand and we would probably just shoot a coat of clear over that paint finish. A couple of mexican blankets on the seats and call her done.

Randy, front tires are 205/65R15 I think. On 15x7 wheels. Rear tires are 255/50R17 on 17x9 wheels. Rear tire fit in the fender well during mock up. We'll see how the 8.8 plays into it. It is a little wider than my 9" which should give me the room I need to accommodate these wheels off set.

I had every intention of finishing the steering arm swap on the 72 this morning. But my wife has been repainting our bathroom lately. So that means that the wall behind the toilet needed put back together. Someone never put the trim and stuff back on after they tore it apart finding that pesky water leak a while ago. Who was that guy? :LOL: Well, I almost have that project done. I do have Friday off and I'm going to put the phone up high by the radio and work on the 40. Haha

Thanks MikeP for the idea. I tried finding a period correct tool box, but none were affordable for the size I needed to fit my battery in. But, I ran across this vintage cooler and luckily no one bid against me. This should be the new battery box for the 40.

That is sweet Ryan!!!!!

Actually for a car I think that is better than a tool box.

That is so cool and what a grand idea guys.

My plans got altered once again..... But, I was able to knock off a lot of items off the honey do list this past weekend. I got the 72 back on the road again and used it to haul 2 loads to the land fill, and another pick up load out of the garage. You almost can't tell though. Haha I did get my Kubota repaired, used it to mow, cut up a dilapidated wooden swing and hauled it off, seeded the grass, and built the base for my shed that has been laying next to the garage since last fall. I cleaned the corner behind the 40 and made a mount to hang the hood on the wall to keep it from getting damaged. I keep picking away at what I can. I ordered some parts from Hot Heads today. Hopefully that stuff gets here before the weekend so I can set the engine and trans in before i do the rear suspension. Here's a pic of the new LH seat too.

You just may have too lower the steering wheel to suit Ryan.

I like the style of seat, and neat idea on getting the hood out of the way. Ya got to do something with them (unless you're working on the truck......the bed is just tooooo handy. :LOL::LOL::LOL:

I cringe of the thought of the hood getting messed up. They are so expensive and this hood is super nice. It is almost going to be one of the last things to go on, so I figured that was an easy to get to spot if I need it. Providing I don't bury it in the process. Haha

Steve, no, luckily not. We probably won't be mowing for a few days now. The yard looks like a swamp currently. We have gotten some steady moderately heavy rain for the last 12hrs or so, and it is suppose to continue all day.

I finally snapped a couple of pics of the Kubota for ya Mike. :eek: She's no prom queen. :whacked: I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a 460 or 560 grill, side panels, and hood and cut them down to fit this mower. Then do something different for the fenders. that will be a winter project. :confused:

My wife found a good deal on a fb swapper site yesterday. We are going to rip up the linoleum in the kitchen and bathroom at some point. She found this removed from a brand new house for $50. They said there is around 150 sg. ft. there. There is even one new box of it so at least we know what it is if we need more of it. This saved us around $600. I wonder how long I can hold that project off for now...... **)

I've got that exact same tractor here on the farm. We've even removed the discharge chute - just like yours! HAH!

We've been getting rain off & on so as soon as the sun comes out you know the grass is gonna shoot up a couple inches.

I figured you did all that cleanup to make room for 2 or 3 new projects:eek::eek: you didn't realize they'd be honey-do's :LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::D

Funny story on the twin Kubotas. I kind of wish this one was a hydro, but oh well. Parts seem to be scarce for these as in decks, and a hood etc. Exactly on the projects being honey do's. That's all I seem to get done. Do you see the metal bed frame in the back round there??? Yeah, you guessed it. Another honey do.... I will post pics of that fiasco once I get the last piece bent up....

Ours could use a new deck but just the skin is some 400 bucks. My one complaint is the hard starting. It has an annoying flaw in the starting circuit.
When you turn the key there will be nothing. Absolutely nothing, you have to "flip" the ignition 4, 5 or more times then it will suddenly engage the starter. Then it won't!
I've replaced so many parts it's ridiculous. I've chatted with a few guys online with the same issue and they seem to cure it with replacing the main power wires to and from the ignition switch and then to the starter. I've been thinking that I'll probably just run 2 new wires and use a momentary push button switch and eliminate the crank circuit in the stock switch.

I just need to find some ambition! LOL..

It's funny you say that...... Mine will do the same thing. My glow plugs don't work, and that is part of the ignition switch. When it died a couple weeks ago, the lift pump wasn't getting power. So I added a toggle switch with a fuse straight off the battery. Then the ignition did the same thing you said. I am probably going to put a napa ignition switch on it and wire up the glow plugs on a push button with a relay and be done with it. The weird thing is the dang alternator still charges. Haha

This morning I cleaned up and took some stuff to my storage trailer to make room to dig the engine and trans out. I got the engine and trans bolted together. I had to gut the overdrive assembly because the snap ring must be damaged and wouldn't allow the planetary to slide on the intermediate shaft. I got the engine and trans set in the car. I kind of wanted to get it farther back, but I either have the LH head setting on the steering shaft, or the trans cooler lines will hit the X member. Here is where it is setting and i'm happy with it. I will have ample room to get to the bell housing bolts and run wires to hide them if need be. Maybe tomorrow I can start building the engine and trans mounts for it.

I found this in the car but I can't remember what it is from. I just might use it. Between the wire harness on the car when I first got it, and this fuse block, I can wire the car and have a nice set up for cheap.

Without a side chute, take care not to mow next to a building, or anything else the discharge can bounce off of.

I have a bed head board like that one also. It was originally for a twin, then I widened it for a queen. We recently got a king size bed but the Mrs had different ideas for a head board so I don't have to widen it again. Thank you Chip and Joanna Gains!:LOL:

Those 46RHs do take up some room don't they?

It looks good in there Ryan. The one suggestion I have I have before you start welding the mounts (and you're probably not going to want to hear it) is to remove the drivers side manifold and bolt the header on. You may be fine, but I suspect you may run into interference problems between the rear tube and steering shaft with the headers.

Mike, yes they do. But the overdrive and lock up sure are nice. I'll bolt the header on in the morning and check it. I'd hate to find out after I made mounts that the headers won't fit. :LOL:

Mike, how do those ebay ss headers fit? These are pretty much use less. Can't get a collector on them. :mad: The header almost touches the oil pan. These must be for a wedge engine?

You should have gotten a pair of angled collectors with the headers.

If you didn’t let me know tonight and I’ll try to get this pair out to you in tomorrow’s mail if the post office lobby is open.

Even with these flanges it is still tight and close to the oil pan. I haven’t put my temperature gun on the pan with it running, but it doesn’t appear to have gotten hot enough to have bothered the paint. Please overlook the ugly welds.

This one of those places you want to go with the copper flange gaskets too. I’d really hate to have to replace those gaskets if they blow out. I just bought a set off E Bay for the cut outs….they were less than $10.

I wish I’d seen your post earlier. I just let the jack down from getting the new tires on the front……..jup it’s low enough to the ground I had to jack it back up to get the pictures……I suppose it’s a good thing though, looks Like I didn’t get lock nut on one of the bolts.

Thanks for that Mike. Which ones are those? I do have the angled collector pieces, but I can't get them in there because they hit the oil pan. It looks like yours are about a half inch farther than the block than mine. Are they just the ebay $115 ones, or are they the flow tech ones? Thanks for the help, Ryan.

I guess I could just cut these and re angle them. I'm not going to hurt them I guess. Haha

Mine are the just the cheapy E bay ones.

I wonder if it would be possible to do away with the collector flange on the header altogether and just weld a 90 degree pipe to the collector (then move the flange down stream to make it possible to remove the header if necessary.

Tried it ( new switch) with little result. Most of the guys I know with'em, replace the wires / connectors and the switch. And put the glow plugs onto a separate circuit.

Good grief, I'm mad for you. Like you said, It's always somthing.

Yesterday I bit the bullet and ordered some Hot heads block huggers. I was going to get the ebay ones but I got a refund from over paying on my escrow so better headers it was. :LOL: I have been messing with getting the engine positioned farther back too. It was eating at me that I spent the time and money to have a recessed fire wall, but wasn't really utilizing it. So I removed the steering column and shaft, and moved the engine and trans back. Once the headers get here, I'll get it finalized.

Yesterday I finally took the time to replace the bad brake line on the 95 F350 I bought late last fall. I have to get it ready to go on vacation in June and July. I had better drive it some before we just bonzi in it to KC for the first part of the Power Tour. I have to replace the head lights and turn signals up front, and get rid of the air brushing on the side of it. Do any of you have any idea what the eagle clenching a diamond might mean? I might leave it, but I doubt it. I don't like having some one else's ride if you know what I mean. :rolleyes: I'm going to repaint the entire truck back green some day. (Maybe) **)

Sorry to hear about the headers Ryan. What headers do you currently have, the Flow Tech or E Bay? Looking at your pictures It does look like I have 1/2-3/4" more clearance.

I bought an old Harley once with a very distinctive (Ugly) paint job and rode it a bit like it was.....clear up until the night a couple of big old bikers came into the bar looking to kick the previous owns butt. Yeah it got a quick paint change.

Mike, I'm guessing I have some variation of the el cheapo china headers. I had to oblong some holes to get them to fit and the flanges probably aren't square any way. They look machined but not very nice. They aren't the flow techs. But, the flow techs are really similar from the pics and specs I found. I called Hot heads and they checked clearance while I was on the phone. I really wanted fender well headers but I knew my shock location would kill that. I decided it wasn't worth trying to find a new place for shocks when you won't even see the headers any how.
