There is ALWAYS something, but your handeling it in great form
Steve-I know its a little late for your buid, but for any one coming along later and reading your thread--You can put oil into engine threw the breathers by removing the topcover--Sometimes it takes a little mod to do but it with a little calm it works--------
Also for some retro look---you can get chrome wheel nut covers that will fit over the head studs/nuts---
Lookin good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah I have to do it that way on Sues car through the Moon breathers Jerry but its a pain so thought I would add a wide neck filler, it's 2" dia so easy to get it in.
Yeah I have those nut covers in stock but the biggest I have found are 11/16 and the nuts are 3/4, if you know of anywhere selling bigger please let me know, I might bore out some M20 stainless acorn nuts.
.
That's a mean looking monster of an engine you got there! Can't wait to listen to it when you fire it up!
I took some peoples advice and got my blower intake and carb plate Soda blasted yesterday but to be honest it looked crap so broke open the flake tin and flaked them both last night, looks much better now !!!

My mini starter turned up yesterday so I bolted it in place just to check, Its minute, about the size of a bean can.

Good job I checked it as the pinion is slightly short when meshed, I've seen starters like this before and they have worked fine but i'm gonna mill out the holes and elongate them .125" and weld in tubes to move them slightly. Yet another mod to something that should fit out of the box !!!

.
Again, awesome work! I'd love to have a mill in my shop. They are so handy, and it's always hard to find a guy that wants to do work for you because they're usually backed up! Man your engine looks beautiful! Did you build your intake for the blower?
Had planned to put motor in the car today but rain scuppered my plans :(, While waiting for it to stop I sorted out some covers to hide the black oxide head stud nuts, the black always end up going rusty and then it looks horrible, my solution was to get some 5/8" stainless dome nuts and drill them out to 7/8" which is the OD of a 3/4" nut, once bored out I gave them a polish, they will be secured with a dab of polyurethane adhesive sealant which will hold them fine but still make them removable. Finish's them off nicely :D

While I was working on the nut covers the postie delivered my new 59" blower belt I've been waiting for this so tried it on the motor, it seemed a bit tight so checked its length, its 57" damn !!! I can't get another till tuesday at the earliest so thats scuppered getting it to the drags Really pissed off now as i've put in all the hours god sent to get it there !!!

At this point I just pushed the engine back in the garage and walked back to workshop pretty dejected to be honest.
However I cheered myself up by polishing my Mr Gasket blower scoop, while I was there I decided it needed something between the fins so laid down some gold flake over a black epoxy base.

Oh well, theres always next year to look forward too !!!
.
Looks fine from here???? whats the problem??distributor clearance???
the stainless head nut covers look nice
Why not get stainless bolts?
Jerry asked the same question I was about too, although I think it is maybe because the distributor is at the wrong end of the engine ? LOL.
can you put the idler on the other side???? it would also help with the pull of the belt by the rotation of the crank---would help garud against the socalled ratcheting which leads to premature belt failure----and if you could put idler on outside forcing belt inwards would help with the WRAP with more teeth in contact-------
and from an old time fuel dragster/funnycar guy-----we always put the big pulley on the bottom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe Jerry, I tried it but the belt fouls the top hose, however tomorrow i'm gonna try it again with the idler pulley pushing the belt inwards.
I'm starting off underdriven at 5lbs boost to get it all bedded in, then I can play around with pulleys and boost :D
.
I thought you were talking about the valve cover bolts
What a great build thread, started reading, and couldn't stop! Love the
craftsmanship!
Rich
Looking great !
Very nice, stinks about the belt. It'll be awesome to hear this monster run!
Was gonna leave my Art Carr manual TH400 in black but it looked shite against the motor so out with the die grinder and wire brushes and its ready for paint
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps3445fb0e.jpg
Didn't take long to splash a bit of colour on it, much happier with it now

Well Steve best thing about the Willy's I get to see it in two places :)
.
Wow, that trans looks awesome! Nice work.
Thanks guys, no updates for a while as we are in Texas for 3 weeks on vacation
.
As always if you find yourself in Northern California, Pints are on me, love to meet yah, Steve.
Well its took long enough but the motor is finally in place in the car, what with holidays and rainy days etc etc it seems to have taken an age to get it in place, its a 2 man job as its a painted and detailed motor and on the nice days there was never anybody around to help.
Anyway step forward my old mucker Brian Lucas who helped out big time today, a couple of hours and we had the sucker in

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps51867ba5.jpg
Everything went well except for one valve cover needs slight modification due to being too close to the firewall, they have never been tried on the motor in the car but its an easy fix
We also reconfigured the blower idler for more belt wrap and the idler is now on the left.

WOW, Gorgeous!
"Its aweful lonesome in the saddle since my horse died."
And that explains why he doesn't take to the spur anymore.....

Well that holiday in the heat of Texas is just a long lost memory now aye. Heck the Willys is certainly looking the mean machine now with the eye candy slotted inbetween the rails. Looking cool Steve.
Absolutely amazing,Steve.. It looks awesome.. Beautiful job..That engine looks right at home in there..:cool::cool:
I wanted to get the engine sealed up asap so valve cover was an urgent job, my tig is setup for a stainless exhaust i'm doing at the moment so popped over to my mate Garys, plus he has a brand new Miller Dynasty :D
First job was to cut off the offending portion, then we sliced up a new end cap and job was a good un
Rushed back to fit it and it was pissing down yet again !!! :(

Wish I could put down a bead that looked like that! Oh, you say it takes practice, practice, practice.....? :o;) Can't I just buy a better welder? :LOL:
A great job, once again, Steve. Loving the fact that you've done this one 100%, even the body!!
Yes, it is amazing watching this car being build in your front yard with no security fences etc. and battling the weather gods all the time. And on the news here this morning the UK is in for a horrendous storm with lots of rain, high wind and maybe flooding so hope you are safe where you live Steve.
Hi Whip, yeah it's real rainy and windy here today, just been out and checked on car and the wind has ripped my California car cover, bummer !!!
Hopefully my mate the trimmer up the road can stitch it up for me.
The wind is 35mph today so things are blowing around a fair bit.
