It stopped raining for a while today so I popped the valve cover on to check clearance, I now have a nice 3/4" of clearance instead of the 1/4" I had previously..

Got a real lot off the list of jobs to do today, had to dodge a few showers but its nice to get stuff done.
First job was the fittings on the transmission cooler, it had push on type but it was bugging me that i really wanted bolt on type, solution was to turn up 2 fittings on the lathe with a 37 degree taper and bore out to fit the 3/8" copper pipe on the cooler, first off the ends were trimmed and the fittings pushed on, I reamed these to get a real tight fit, then they were soldered with plumbers solder.

Here it is fitted with the lines

Next job was to alter the pipework on the electric water pump, because I altered the blower belt configuration it now allowed me to run the pump a lot lower, the entry port is now straight off the bottom hose stub. I just extended the pipework down with a couple of mandrel bends and gave it a quick going over on the polisher.

Next job was to fit the plug wires I had already bought, unfortunately I received 90 degree dizzy fittings instead of the straight type I asked for so these will get replaced at some point, they are also too short on the offside and pass over the top of the valve covers which I don't really like, the nearside are fine though. They will do for starting it up.

Getting close Steve!!! Everything looks good!
That sure is PURRRDY
Lookin' good, Steve. Real good! I think we will be as excited as you when you fire it up.
Great!!
Now eagerly awaiting video of the start up!!
Careful though, all that power may slow the Earth rotation!! ;-)
Managed to find a few hours today as ran out of materials on a job I was doing so looked out the window and it had stopped raining so managed to get a few more jobs of the list, its actually very short now !!!
I had ordered another blower belt due to the repositioning of the idler assembly so that was the first thing to fit, got it all in place and now the idler fouled the thermostat cover end of the top hose, unfortunately the length belt I wanted they don't make so had to have one slightly shorter.
So out with the thin cutting disc and within minutes I had a selection of bits, the top hose was duly modified and extended where needed but the thermostat cover needed to exit at an angle, so more cutting and the bend was rewelded round a bit, all good now !!!
I'm glad I altered the idler now as it gives excellent blower belt wrap.
I really must get a nice cover for that rad cap !!!

Filled all the fluids up today and although I knew the modified oil pan was gonna be greedy I didn't realise it would devour 2 gallons of Valvoline VR1 !!!
Need to get 2 more quarts tomorrow to get it to full on the stick !!!

That nut on the radiator bracket got enough bite?
I figured that engine would twist enough to cause a problem if things were not NAILED down tight
Any reason why the top radiator inlet cant be swapped with the filler to save a long and winding route?
A few more jobs done today, the hose fitting and longer coil lead turned up so they got fitted, about the only awkward job left was to make an alternator mounting for the small Nippon Denso alternator I have, I'm quite surprised no one noticed it missing to be honest  Its a 60 amp so should be fine but I have an 80amp which is a straight swop if needed.
I've left it as one of the last jobs as I needed to sort the blower belt first, I had a few options but ended up mounting it low on the drivers side.

It was quite awkward to do on the willys with all the other stuff in the way so used my 26T Cadillac motor as a jig, plus its nice and warm in the workshop :D
The rear mount picks up on the original engine mount pad and the front mount picks up off the fuel pump blank off plate, nice and simple.
I originally intended to lighten the incredibly heavy stock cast pulley, I started turning of the not needed excess but then thought I might as well make an aluminium one, still need to put the groove in for the belt.

Next I needed an adjusting arm, this mounts on the frame.

These pics are it all bolted in place, its tricky to photograph now the front end panels are back on.

Also moved the Willys to its new home for the winter Thanks to Jason & Vince for helping me move it, doing 3 point turns with a spool equipped car is definitely not fun !!! :(

Steve,
Do you have any concern with the potential of a motor mount failure, and the frame mounted alternator bracket being the point of restraint? Just wondering...
Wow Steve, you do fantastic work but I am truly stunned and amazed that " The Scape Bin " has been depleted to the stage you had to purchase Stainless stock. Is the garage in a secure area and is it in a line of garages at the end of the street type thing ? I just would hate to see the Willys go missing now when it is so close to finished. Is the a small doorway that would allow you to fit extra internal locks to the four corners of the tilt door ? Why I ask is that one night a scum bag used a screwdriver to force the standard catch which allowed him to lift up the corner of the tilt door on my old garage and he stole all my electrical tools. Gladly due to me fitting extra locks he couldn't open the door fully so couldn't take either my daily driver or T Bucket. I realize this is out in the colonies and we have primitive savages here but I understand your borders aren't as secure as they used to be and now have heaps of unemployable people who like nothing better then steal from others that work darn hard to get what they want.
Whip I had a neighbor who scaled the 8 foot fence on a regular basis to help herself to the meat in the freezer and the beer in the fridge in our garage. I finally figured it out when 100.00 dollars of steaks and burgers disappeared in a matter of days. I then started locking the garage and put a security camera system up, I guess she tried forcing the door, because the lock was jammed one day causing me to have to break in to my own garage to fix it. Now there is a steel plate in the frame to keep unwanted folks outs. Sad thing when people feel the need to take from others. Now we let the dogs out when ever they bark, that seems to keep the back yard and garage free of unwanted visitors! :)
That is all good then Steve and if you notice the earth move funny one night and you haven't been drinking, you will know to sprint that 2oo yards quicker than the fastest man on earth and without drugs. Now the other Steve, shit man, the cheek of the woman. I would of run a line from a power source, here it is 240 Volts, out from the garage and hooked it up to the top few feet of the fence. That would of sorted her out real quick. A sad reflection on society that there are people who believe it is their right to steal from others instead of working hard for their own needs like 99% of good honest folk. Sad how things have changed so much in the last 30 to 40 years.
Had a stroke of luck on sunday I thought I was gonna have to make a grooving tool for the alternator pulley but chatting with my mate Brian and he said he had a grooving tool for vee belts, so had a borrow of it today and put the groove in the aluminium pulley I made up earlier

Work Work Work Its never done. BUT it helps keep ya young, wore out but young
Well the Willys is tucked up in its lockup but still been making bits that have forgot, was topping up with coolant and realised I had no catch can fitted
I know I could use a coke or beer tin like some people use but wanted something a little better, legally it has to hold a pint but I made it hold 1.5 pints.
Was going to make it in stainless but as I don't really weld much aluminium I thought it would be good practise
Had a look in my scrap ally bin and only thing suitable was a piece of 5" diameter x 1/4" wall tube, A bit big really so I decided to turn it down in the lathe to .050" wall thickness.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...psvpnhjinx.jpg
Once the turning was done I slit the tube down the side and used a piston ring compressor to pull it down to 3.5" diameter.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps0zcgbh8k.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...psstuz7mlb.jpg
Next job was to make some end caps, I didn't want flat ends so I metal spun some .050" flat aluminium sheet in the lathe to make curved tops, this is done by spinning the lathe at its fastest speed and pressing against the aluminium with a piece of hardwood dipped in tallow, Its gets very hot through friction, crude but it works
Once made the caps were welded in place, wasn't worried about the weld as it was to be scurfed off and radiused. I had a bit of a problem welding the .050" as I really needed 1.6mm tig rods but all i had was 2.4mm rods, the 2.4 rods tend to cool the weld pool too much and also give a higher and not so neat bead.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...pscwq8xn0t.jpg
Next I spun up some threaded bungs for the top inlet and the bottom drain, also 2 more for the sight tube, these were welded in place, welding getting better with practise
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...psvw9w9lce.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps0rfaats6.jpg
I thought I would give it a polish
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...psplikwfrl.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps4mwdjjql.jpg
After spending time polishing it I realised I didn't actually like it polished so scuffed it up and painted it satin black, looks better know !!!
I also welded on a mounting plate but forgot to take a pic

.
nice home made work as usual Steve.
But we all loved the highly polished finish so can you take that black off it please........ Okay, all is good, it is your car, but that polished jobbie certainly looked the part.
Thanks guys but sometimes less is more
.
Managed to get the catch can mount made today in between nipping round to my mate Jason to help him progress with Wiggys T bucket, again its made in aluminium and bolts to the chassis with 3 x 1/4" unf bolts, just need to paint it black and bolt on.
Also got the bottom of my aluminium welding problems, turned out the AC cleaning dial was wired backwards on my welder so when i was selecting penetration i was actually using more cleaning !!! Had me going till my mate came over and worked it out.

I had forgotten about this forum and low and behold, my favorite builder from the "other" forum is on here! Like Ive said before, great build Steve!
Man, I really love how you build pieces when you can! That is awesome and I try to be like guys like you! I need to learn how to weld aluminum better because I'd really like to remake a lot of my parts on my corvette in aluminum to cut some weight.
Yes its a skill worth learning Ryan, I don't do an aweful lot of aluminium so not as neat as I could be, I find aluminium welding one of the nicest welds to do, I recently made an aluminium tank and the welds were passable to start with but as the day went on the welds just got better and better so practise is a very good idea.
.
Wow what a great day today has been, sunshine all day Got out there bright & early and got the front axle etc in place, I also made a little towing fixture which bolts to the frame to make it easier to get to and from the lockup where its stored.

Also got the rear axle & spring all mounted, next I will mount the motor & transmission, ran out of light in the end otherwise would of got the rear wheels on

just an observation so dont shoot me
the front of the ladder bar only supported
