looks very cool Steve. Like the grill and tail lights too.
Wow, if I knew those head and tail lights were that nice they might have gotten lost in transit !:LOL: That guys does make some nice parts, doesn't he?
Don
Yes Dave they are repros, very good though, I got them from Mike at Willys Reproduction Parts in SoCal.
Thanks Steve, I'm starting to with i had bought the beltline trim now, I think it would look cool with it.
Wouldn't of happened without SuperDon :LOL::LOL:
Well not much progress today due to getting up a bit late  ain't jetlag a wonderful thing :(
Along with my lights i got the door handles too, Its difficult to use the original handles on a glass car as the originals sort of clip into place so Willys parts have modified them and do a verson just for glass cars that bolt in place, pretty well designed so you only see the screw heads when the handle is turned. They are very nicely made with good chrome plating.

I also made a colour descision today, Ian (bigbossman had done several photoshops for me in satin blue & grey but they just didn't work and looked horrible, So see as its a 60's car I have gone for a dark blue mini flake., not sure the pic will give its true colour and sparkle.

Someone commented that the header flanges didn't have enough room for the bolts so today i made a bit more headway with them and they are fine as i thought they would be.

I knew you couldn't get away without the sparkles.:D The color looks great. Are you going to do the door art? Looks like it's coming along good.
That has more clearance than most production headers I have seen. I have a drawer full of special wrenches and sockets and some of them have been ground and bent in various ways just to get header bolts in and out. There are some header bolts you even have to use an open end wrench on because they are so tight to the tube.
Those door handles look as good as the rest of the stuff you bought over here. The guy who makes them has a real niche' market all to himself, it seems.
See, Steve, I told you I could keep a secret........I knew weeks ago what color your car was going to be, but I didn't tell a sole.
Don
The hardest thing with any car project, is the more time you put into it, the more you want it to look really good, vs. o.k. or driveable, pretty soon it takes on a life of it's own. For what it's worth the blue flake looks perfect for what you want to do with the Willys. I had a motorcyle helmet it the 70's that looked like that blue metal flake. I thought it was so cool!
Awesome colour Steve and now tell me as I regard you as the flafe expert, is that a medium flake ??I now believe from reading your previous posts either here or elsewhere, one can get different grades of flake?? I too like the goodies you purchased in the States and what happened to the " just thrown together race car look" you were going for?? Oh that's right, you haven't used stainless bolts on everything yet.
Yes mate the sparkles will make the difference, I really wanted a finish i didn't have to look after but after Ian done many photoshops it just looked crap, I think the flake will suit the style of car too.
My mate Ian (the bigbossman) is a time served sign writer and is skilled in Gold leaf so thats what he wants to use, should look very cool.
Good O i can now tell you more secrets about the woman on the other side of our road, she used to be a female escort :3dSMILE:
Steve i wasn't going to fit the beltline trim as its a bit spendy but the flake will highlight the chrome so i think its now needed. The SWC car was dark mettalic blue once too, heres a couple of pics with the trim and without, Hopefully i will get mine on straight

How ya doing Whip, Yes flake comes in various sizes from Large down to ultra mini flake, the ultra looks more like a coarse metallic, my favourite is the mini flake as its the sparkliest of them all, some people think the big flake is the sparkly one but if you think in square inches the mini flake will have more reflective flakes per square inch than the big flake, that make sense ???
Is being called a "flake expert" supposed to be a compliment? Come to think of it, down in Kiwi land it may be.............:whacked:
I think the one with the belt trim is a clone, but it makes your point for comparison. Given the likely reflective menageree from the flake the addition of the trim might complicate what the eye sees.
Bob,
Not saying the one posted is or is not a clone - only saw "The Swindler" run once at KCIR back in around '67, and cannot recall beltline trim or not, but the Stone Woods and Cook website shows that they had them both ways over the years. Yep Steve the trim does set off with the blue flake. How about trim around the front grill? Just a thought, might be too much though.
Not sure Bob hadn't thought of it that way
You might want to save this pic i took of Don on a night out :LOL::LOL:

You trying to make work for me Steve
Yup, the A was the one with trim but I only recall it in the light blue, but that is about 50 years ago. As I recall the dark blue is B, no trim, again long ago memory. Just a note on the dark blue one pictured above with trim, the grille opening is a tad small and the front shackles don't quite hang the same, as well as Ansen sprint style wheels that I don't ever recall seeing on the originals, that's why it looks like a clone to me............again, I'm not a total fanatic on SWC stuff, just fond memories.
Steve, that Picture of Pops tops 'em all........................and I may not sleep tonight!! Ugh!!
Agreed, been too long ago and the memory is not as good as it used to be. But if memory does serve me right the powder blue car was "A" and I believe it was BB/GS and was wrecked on tour. I loved the "Gassers" and watched them run many times at Lions.
Bob the darker pic was taken by me at Bakersfield and i seem to remember someone saying it was a clone.
Yeah Pops said no charge for a lap dance :LOL::LOL: (there will be retaliation i'm sure lol)
Those headlights, tailights and door handles make the car Steve. Looks too cool!
And see us Hulgas boys can all keep a secret as I knew too what color you were painting weeks before you disclosed it!
Keep up the good work!
I think it's going to rain................ugly photos coming!
Ha! Yes I did Steve thank you very much!!! I just wish I did not sweat so much!
It was awesome having you guys in Florida....I have to admit though I am glad you are back home so we can see some of this great progress on the Willys :)
Give our love to Sue:):)
Your playing and entertainment was brilliant Don, keep sweating !!!
Sue sends a sloppy kiss to ya.
Steve - didn't you make some door handles a little while back? I remember some nice shiney stainless ones that looked great, but I think the original style fits the theme a bit better. I'd love to see what else is in that scrap pile though
You gotta post a link to share with us. Gotta love rhythm and blues.
Wow thanks for the link! What a talented guy Don Jr. is. If I read the other info from the band page correctly, our Don Sr. and his pops too are or were musicians too, something I never knew. Very cool. I really like the music they are playing too! Wish I still lived out that way to see them live.
The last few evenings have been spent making up some fenderwell headers, these curve up and over to clear my side steering draglink, tube is 2 inch stainless 316L primaries, unfortunately i couldn't find any stainless collectors at a sensible price so i've used some mild steel ones from Summit Racing.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...S/dcbb7ef5.jpg
Some 1/4" plate was spun in the lathe to make the quick release caps and a stud mounted in the end of the collector to take a wing nut for securing, the standard wingnut will be changed for some larger custom made ones when i get around to making them.
A gasket was cut from some Reinz boiler door gasket material.

The primaries were started by squaring off the ends of the tube and welding to the flanges.

.
You make this stuff look way too easy, Steve. Really nice work on the headers and I especially like the single wing nut deal............very old timey. :)
You and Sue should have been here last night. Dan and I went to see Don's band and Dan sat in again. We had a blast and I even had a young lady ask me for a few dances.............being the gentleman I am, how could I refuse. I may have to start going out more. :D
Don
Very nice work again Steve and with part being stainless and the primaries mild steel, are you going to have them chrome plated or go the cheap man way, aerosol spray on paint??
Hey Don,I watched a episode of CSI Miami last night and it was about cougars and cubs. Now mate, I'm going to watch all the episodes to see if you appear on it.
I've got a picture of Pops a few years ago that should explain everything...............
Whip, I actually like cougars a lot, but younger women are fun too.:LOL:
