Bruce is just about the best around Dave, most of the platers have fallen by the wayside to be honest du to the Health & Safety do gooders :(
He is a car guy hisself so knows whats needed, I've been going to him for the last 41 years !!! When i first went there i was 17 and he was the apprentice, when the owner died he left to business to Bruce, He has never let me down on quality and many of my old cars are still around with the same chrome on them.
Bruce taught me how to polish over the years and he became a good friend, I have to pay but he gives me a 30% discount which is very handy.
On the cage i knew it was going to be a lot of money so i did all the polishing myself and he just plated it all, final price was £250 ($400) so i saved a lot there.

I know what you mean on the do gooders, Steve!!! Hardly a decent plating shop left around here. I'm not a real big chrome fan anyway, so I'm happy with paint and powdercoating. If you do send something out to be chromed, it's going to be gone forever and chances are at least half the parts will have to be sent back to be redone!!!! Hope your man has a good apprentice to keep things shiny when he's done!!!!

Unfortunately he has no one to leave it to, great shame as it will just disappear when his time is up :(

Ha ha ha, The master is a 60 Chevy truck unit so is brake & clutch, I'm just using one side of it as single circuit brakes, everything is brand new and i've used single circuit many times before so i'm happy with it. I guess it wouldn't be much trouble to fit a balance bar and turn it into a dual system.

Nice to get back into the workshop today and work off all the festive food

Had to get my cage trial fitted together so it all went together easily as there is no room in the ar for fiddling around, had to sand the slip joints slightly and clear all the tapped holes out, There is a lot of copper, nickel & chrome on it for sure.

That cage is a thing of beauty,Steve..Will look awesome in there..I hear you on the PC pushers regarding chrome platers,auto painting shops,etc,etc...The chroming places down here are diminishing too,,possibly for that reason,and no one wants to work,anyway...Its a specialised job,and its very hard to find a good plater now..We have one a couple of hours south of us,who does a very nice job..Hope hes still around when I start the Galaxie..

I dunno Steve---but I think that cage should be put in the showroom and you'll have to build another one for Willy.....

Well today started off good as i got the tubes i had been waiting for to fit my new front tyres, I'm using Protrac 560 x 15's, I did try firestone 560 x 15's but for some strange reason the Protracs are 1" taller ???



I set off to the tyre fitters all excited, they took special care of the rims in fitting the tyres but on the second rim when they inflated the tyre a large piece of the bead just pinged off



Now i knew one wheel had been repaired but evidently not yery well !!!

I found someone nearby that is experienced in welding Magnesium so hopefully tomorrow it will all be repaired, The guy took one look and said someone had repaired it with ally TIG rod and it had cold cracked. He offered me some magnesium rods to do it myself but i declined as having never welded magnesium i thought practising on my wheels wasn't a great idea !!!

Scary stuff,steve..Nice looking wheels,too..Hope it repairs ok..

Here's one of the wheels fitted, ignore the fact i put the springs back on the wrong way round :o, the pins are off set and i didnt notice till it was back on the ground.

Fitting the spindle mounts did exactly what i wanted by moving the wheel inboard a few inches, the old wheels were pushed out by the adaptor in the disc kit and the answer would of been to narrow the axle slightly.

Today i took the wheel to an expert, he was a really nice bloke and even let me have a go on a scrap magnesium rim, Its very much like welding ally, except the gas mix is 50/50 argon/helium and the rod is obviously different, we used a az101 filler rod. The arc is also much shorter than aluminium and everything has to be very very clean. Also he preheated it.
I learn't a lot of this old guy today and now would'nt hesitate to have a go myself.
Unfortunately he didn't finis the job as he ran out of rods :(

Well not much progress to speak of but today i'm a very happy chappy, Got a call from the wheel repairer to say my Spindle mount mag welding was done, They did an absolutely outstanding job and you would think it had never been damaged !!! They also sent it for crack testing and gave me a certificate to prove its ok.

They couldn't remachine it as their lathe was down but luckily i knew someone that had a big faceplate on a lathe, 24 hrs later it was done (thanks Brian)

did they weld up the entire area then cut it back???I wouldn't think they'd weld the part back in???

No charlie they built it all up with magnesium rod, the broken part was aluminium, that was the original problem.

Thanks for posting the wheel repair, Steve. It looks better than new with the face freshly turned. I really enjoy your posts showing fabrication, and I envy your skills and abilities.

I miss seeing Don's posts, too, but I also miss the input of Ken Thurm, BrianUpNow from Canada (yellow A PU who is a fantastic machinist), Don Dalton (who only posts occasionally now), Don Shillady (think that name's spelled right), and those are just a few that I remember being very active posters in the not too distant past. Some others post in bursts, sharing something on their build, then going dormant for a while before hitting CHR with another blast of posts. The fact is people come and go, and occasionally someone jumps back in after being gone for months or years. I hope that you continue to share your talents with us, and that we get some other builds going to keep things more interesting for everyone.

Cheers Roger, I too miss all those peoples posts. Its a shame.

Steve I'm with yah. I wish I had something to post about my build, but weather and money, and lack of time off are big factors for me right now. It seemed the new format to the forum was the start to the major shift of this site. I came here in 2007, and within 1/2 hour of posting a question, 2-3 people would chime in, including many of the above. Politics, and advertisements seem to be the major factors that have sent people away from here. It is a real shame because it is these very people that have attracted most of us here, and kept us. I guess once I got most of the beginner questions out of the way, I enjoyed the banter and project sharing most. Wish Don and Ken would come back, between the three of you, your build posts keep this place alive. I appreciate other members still here and willing to lend advice and comments, so I stay and follow their builds and yours. Dave has always been helpfull, and posted build threads that are fun to watch, and Roger is here too to lend a hand and keep us entertained, as is Bob. But losing Don is sort of like losing Dean Martin and being left with half a comedy team, no fodder for Bob to post his beauties.
Anyway, I learn from your threads all the time, and you inspire me to improve the quality of what I want from my project. Your tips on fabrication, make me want to take some metal shop courses and get a metal lathe! So please keep posting and Cheers!
