Richard use a paint pen or permenent marker mark the distributer to block then mark where the rotor is pointing and replace them in same position . You can put distributer back in a tooth off but if you mark them you will be fine its what i do , memory is only short term at times with me .
I have to say, I love Fords but hate the distributer setup with the oil shaft! I remember a few times, pulling the pan, because the shaft fell in, while I was adjusting the distributor!:eek:
Steve, you are absolutely correct when I was 20 years old I was sitting in a restaurant about midnight. I had a 60 Corvette with a 327 pretty much stock with a four speed, a guy came in the restaurant he had a 57 bel air red 2dr. ht. We got to talking and he asks what engine I had, and I told him. He said his was more of a high performance but would like to have a stock engine, (later I found out it had a sleeve in one of the cylinders). He asked if I would want to trade engines even up? I said yes when do you want to do it? He said how about right now so off we went working through the night out side with an a frame an hoist, we got his running with my engine but I had to get another bel housing the next day. How is that for a spur of the moment, now I want to have all of my ducks lined up before starting?
The engine is a 1976 Chevy 454. I had too replace a head on an 350 truck engine 6 or 7 years ago and did the whole thing turning the engine over by hand until #1 was top dead center, and adjusting each valve, to my surprise it fired right up. I just didn’t want to have to go through all of that if I didn’t have to, with a bad back it’s tough leaning over the engine. On the old truck I was sitting on the passenger side fender well and broke the heater tube so that ran into another job. I’m getting closer to giving up on the old cars?????????

Dave W. hit the mark on the oil drive it is a little quirk I just bump starter with a screw driver at solenoid just take a tap . Your welcome too but like said from all this site is dedicated to helping and i dont respond much , but this is fresh with me right now LOL.
Ok finally topped it off and got the valve covers done last thing i had to do . There drying up and will go back on tommorrow . Engine compartment is done .
Had to get the pickup out of the garage to paint some other parts, thought I'd take a couple pics of the progress... Still a lot of little stuff to install, but it's coming along nicely.

She's is really looking good Dave, I must say that is a pretty Ford if I have ever seen on. I like the wheels, they look cool. Got an interior shot, there was a console if I remember right? Very nice work Dave, I remember what it looked like befor you started.
Dave the truck is sharp and it's not going to take long to exchange it to the green . Then the Ranchrostang will begin right . Watching that and the Chebby ?? will clear the garage for a couple more projects .

Dave the truck looks great. It reminds me of some of the friday night racers we had around town when I was a kid! I like the red painted rails on the bed. It gives it that hot rod touch, and the tail light relocation came out well!:3dSMILE:

I really makes me laugh - some of the mfr's are touting 30mpg as so great. My wife's last car, a Ford ZX2 with the Zetec engine was open road 35-37mpg and around town 28mpg. Not sure if that was an exceptional one, but it was a nice car. Even my '97 T-Bird V8 ran 27-28 mpg open road/19-20 town. Now, I have the real 'economy' vehicle as my DD - a V10, 415 ci, 7400# F350:CRY: :CRY: :CRY:
I don't get it either, IC2. The reason I looked at this was I had a Festiva several years ago with the exact same drivetrain (1.3 liter, 5-speed) that regularly got 40+ on the highway. That thing was indestructable, sold it still running good with over 300,000 miles. How can the automakers charge $8K extra for a hybrid that barely gets as good a mileage as these or the old Geo Metros? Granted these are REALLY small but for a cheap, reliable commuter that's easy to work on, you can't beat 'em. Leaves more money for the fun cars.Quote:

The little 94 escort 1.9 Automatic I just bought is averaging about 33 mpg driving to work . Average speed is 45 to 50 and i take off pretty hard not a light footer . Heck a couple days I ran the A/C and I live 20 miles from work half way is stop and go lights first half is allmost all open roads with just a few stop signs.
Those are really good little engines and pretty much space to get around under the hood when you're working on them.Quote:

Got the cut and buff done on the vintage race car pieces, unfortunately the rest of the parts didn't show up for the chassis so we can't make our big debut tomorrow at Huset's Speedway for Hall of Fame night.... Oh well, my part of it's done anyway.... Ron and Lyle are doing the chassis, they aren't real happy about not having the car done, but parts delays just go with the territory.... That paint is gorgous Dave, is that a burgundy? It is deep and very cool looking, nice work ol' pard you've still got the touch.
Progress on the stock 27 Tudor: Got the head on and torqued down, replaced the water pump to the stock outlet (Mr Ford didn't put water pumps on Ts), put on the horn which goes over and bolts through the water outlet, put on the fan, got the timing cover on, complete commutator assembly (timer), put on generator and its cover, and finished with the valve cover. Just need a cotter pin for the spark rod to complete the front of the engine.
Next week I'll be rebuilding the Holley "Vaporizer" carburetor and the petcock on the gas tank. Shooting for Tuesday to have it back on the road.
When I get bac from my motorcycle trip "out west" I'll be pulling out the rear axle and rebuilding that also ( there's two shrust wachers which are made out of babbit which dissenagrate and then there's no brakes), I'll be putting in ones that are made out brass. That's all I plan on doing this year on the 27, after that it's back to the 26 coupe.

I'm sure there's a better way to do it, but I'm no 'puter whiz. Anyway, the guy who owned the car, Daryl Dawley, was a very good friend. We used to hang out at his shop, go racing together, and have tons of fun. He got killed racing his sprinter at Knoxville, Ia. This whole project is a tribute to him, bought and paid for by his friends, and will eventually reside in the Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum in Knoxville, Ia.
RIP Daryl, still miss the heck out of you!
Brick the power assist cylinder , slave as I call it . 3 pieces to make up power steering in the mustang . Sure was nice when they combined it to just 2 pump and gear box . Lot off spit and polish under it Brick i need to get the top half looking like that also . Wonder how much room Dave has left in his garage .
Tom your looking great bent over the T . Feels good working on them , like Dave has said its thereapy for us . Now of course the aches that happen from bending , crawling under and just looing at it are the same Therapy .
Dave now thats being a celeb in the paper. Not just a paragraph or 2 but what looks like a couple pages . Hhhmm autograph on ebay is getting bids as i type i'm sure :D . This is part of auto history i don"t follow but do enjoy it when i run up on iy .
Nice article Dave, and very nice paint. I keep occilating between trying to paint my truck my self, using the old IH red or having a local guy, spray it for me( I also like the New Holland AG red!) He said I wouldn't get any depth to the paint with industrial tractor paint, but your pictures seem to argue with that point! Nice work, congrats on the nice write up!:)
Thanks on the write up..,.... The paint is PPG two stage, not the old enamel stuff they painted the tractors with.... Got my PPG guy to duplicate the color of the car, which originally was the old IH red enamel.... There are some new clears that work very nice over both the acrylic and synthetic enamels.......Quote:

yup, Daryl had a lot of fans and friends... Doug is still around Sioux Falls when he's not flagging sprint car races. Wolfie has a shop in Sioux Falls and building sprint cars. His son Robby won his first ever sprint car heat race last night at Husets, he's 16 and shows a lot of talent for a youngun. Wolfie had him racing MX for a number of years, curious to see how he does in the sprints....
Between you and KennyD and Ken Thurm we are loaded with celeb's!!! Thats a really great thing you are doing for your lost friend and fellow racer. Your a good guy Dave and I am proud to know you. Make sure we see the car when it's done OK?
Thanks Brick. Way I see it when you're all done doing whatever your life's goals were, about all you have left is your friends and memories.... This whole project is about honoring a friend and a racer.... He made a difference in a lot of people's lives. Daryl lived hard, raced hard, worked hard, yet always had time to stop and talk. Didn't matter if you just won the A Main or it was your first time sitting in the stands watching a race he was the kind of guy who would stop what he was doing and explain things, answer questions, or whatever.... Lots and lots of folks around here owe Daryl for helping them get started in racing and giving some very solid advice on how to go fast....Quote:
