That's ok Mate, anyone could screw up and put the steering wheel on the wrong side..........we're only human. ;):LOL:

Don,I did see those pix of Steves roadster, but the r/pu is as kool as the roadster..would like that in my shed too..
Oh well, had lunch, better go back to the shed/salt mines..Back on to Lyndas Customline..;)
I have all colours in stock Whippy as i sell flake through the shop, yeah i used a fair bit on the roadster, its called Forest Lime. Its really difficult to photograph as it don't show up but shows better in video, heres a clip of it in full sun.

Sue's car is Porsche India Red (clear over base) its a shade variant of Guards Red.
I got the heater from U.S. ebay, havn't a clue what make as it came without tags, I have a collection of vintage heaters and probably have around 30 nowadays, Sue's heater is the only one of that type i've ever seen, it has a diecast body and i just polished it, she keeps it polished well as the shine can dull quite quickly.
My roadster has an Arvin i restored but i also installed a set of heated seat pads from a BMW in mine, It gets pretty nippy in england and i like to use my car as much as possible. Heres an early build shot of the heater

Had a few hours spare today so decided to drill and detail my F100 front drum backplates, Not sure whether to chrome them or paint them in flake at the moment.

You've heard of "Computer wrist", I bet you now have "Drill press wrist".:D Funny how a bunch of holes in something make it look so cool.......I like it.
Don
Now I believe that you enjoy polishing things so why not chrome those backing plates. I had my Mk3 Zephyer brake calipers chromed on my bucket plus almost every other part including the leaf springs on the front end and man ,do I curse myself at clean up time after each run out..Oh the joys of hot rodding,I wouldn't want it anyway else..:LOL::LOL:
If you have them chromed, have them baked afterward to remove free hydrogen atoms. Read up on hydrogen embrittlement. These are brakes you're dealing with.

Good info to know Richard!
Surprisingly enough Don it didn't take long to drill really, I would guess at about an hour, marking out however took a little longer :(
I've thought overnight and reckon i will flake them as the paint will add a little contrast to all the shiny bits and also the polished rivets will be a highlight. thanks for the positives.
I used a 5/8" UNF stainless jam nut to hold the pivot in place but wasn't completely happy with it then i remembered i had some 5/8" stainless castle nuts, i think it looks much better now. I'm using them all over as i think they look old car if you know what i mean.

I'm like you Steve, I like the contrasts between painted and chromed parts. I have seen cars with too much chrome, if that makes sense. I much prefer seeing painted parts with touches of chrome or stainless. I saw a 32 coupe on another forum recently where the guy must have had a job as a night watchman in a chrome factory.........everything was chromed, and it was just a big blur to look at, no definition.
Don
Come on be honest, you just don't want that bright English sun glare reflecting of those backing plates . Now ,I have been doing some reseach and as you may know, I have,or thought I had , decided on the colour of my bucket but now I would like to know, what colour is that Bucket that you build? You know, it has a chopped '32 griile, caddy aircleaner, sits prefectly on the road with those chrome steelies and white walls and is painted Itoldyouso (Don) pink.:D I love the colour but how would it look with the heavy flake as after seeing your '32 ,thats the finish I want..
It was a special mix i did at our local paint factors Whip, i just mixed it up till it looked like a mettalic bubblegum.
I have some Pink flake which is absolutely awesome, Sue had me repaint our kitchen doors as she wanted something unusual so i did them in gloss black with pink flake insert panels. Its an amazing colour, If your serious about flake i can send you some samples.
i was originally going to use it on my 26T but thought i would go different with the copper flake.

Well not much progress but its getting there, here is the suicide mount all finished and polished.
Perch is welded in at 10 degrees, 7 is the castor angle and the other 3 degrees is the cars rake.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...uly7th2010.jpg
I got one side of this joint perfect but *floop*ed the other up so decided to polish out the weld completely.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ly7th20102.jpg
Here's some polished holes just for Brizey
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ly7th20103.jpg
The joining of the 2 halves is imminent so the joining plates were cut, they have been sized to snugly slide inside the box section and are secured by a bolt to pull everything together nicely and inline (this will be done on the jig) the bolt goes in the centre hole and the other 2 holes are for rosette welds then the bolts are removed and again rosette welded, then the joint is welded and polished out.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ly7th20109.jpg
Polishing has vastly improved timewise due to my latest buy Its a 4HP 3 phase Pro polisher 2800 rpm that i'm running off a single phase to 3 phase digital convertor, its an amazing bit of kit that i reckon saves me 50% polishing time as its impossible to slow down and you can really lean on stuff.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ly7th20106.jpg
My rad supplier in the states made me up a chopped radiator in ally, Looks like the grille shell needs a bit out of it
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ly7th20104.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ly7th20108.jpg
I will be losing the brackets from the sides as the rad will be mounted on some custom stainless brackets with the original Fords springs and bolts, in stainless of course
I will be welding some 10mm ally with tapped holes to the rad sides to take 2 bolts to hold the rad brackets.

Rad brackets (yet to be polished)

Steve, that is one SERIOUS polisher. I could really hurt myself on that one. Bet it really has sped up your work time a lot.
Rest of the stuff you are doing is just as nice as the first batch........simply stunning.
Don
Jeemaneeze 32,
After looking at this build project I'm going to delete my build project and sell it for scrap. What a hell of a build.
Jack.
I've got most of the bits for this project squirrelled away but was lacking some door handles, had a look around but nothing floated my boat so decided to make some with holes in them to follow the theme in the car.
Luckily I had some 10mm stainless offcuts in the bin so a shape was drawn and cut out with a 1mm cutting disc, as this was easy to hold in the drill vice I drilled the holes before cutting out.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...g/b3bbbf54.jpg
Once the shape was cut it was linished smooth ready for polishing. At this stage the shape was put into the handle with a soft sander and a curve was put into the handle by clamping in a vice over 3 small pieces of bar.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...g/34f7a84d.jpg
Here we have the polished handle, next I spun up a couple of pieces of stainless bar to weld to the handle to act as a extension, I forgot to take a picture of these I think
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...g/d531b04a.jpg
Here we have the handle welded up and the weld polished out, I'm pretty pleased the way they turned out
I robbed the baseplates off some old handles so these will be rechromed.

You've been using that new buffer, haven't you? :D Looks really nice Steve.
Don
This is going to look great when done. I like all the home made stuff!:D
Steve, I watched a very interesting program on TV the other night and learned some things I never knew. The subject was "Chrome" and it was on the History Channel. One thing that I never knew was that stainless steel is comprised of steel and chromium. They blend in a certain percentage of this chromium that looks like slag into the melter and that is what gives stainless it's ability to resist corrosion.
Just one of those things that you don't give any thought to about how something is made. They also discussed how regular chrome plating is done, and how things like the Chrysler building are sheathed in it. It was a good show.
Don
Heck I could really really get sick at looking at all that awesome stuff that some people are just so talented at throwing together because they just couldn't find the right door handle..:whacked:
I struggle getting the right size washer to fit the bolt most of the time and you call yourself "cheap".:HMMM: I call myself far worse most of the time when no one can hear.:o:o:o
You are simply doing a fantastic job as usual on this build and that must be abit of a curse when you have a reputation for excellent workmanship, there are just no shortcuts eh.:3dSMILE:
If you and Sue are tired of the hot summer weather up there you are both welcome to come downunder and do some work on the bucket oh and don't forget the flake samples,da....:LOL::LOL:
Now i thought you might of known that Don, when i left school i did a precision toolmaking apprenticeship so metaluegy (spelling ?) was all part of the course, there are more than a few types of stainless.
I'm lucky that my mate is a chromer/polisher so i've been quite involved over the years as far as he has let me do the actual process on some of my own bits ( i have an inquisative mind)
Its quite surprising what is involved in the chrome process :)
WOW!
I do not know how I missed this thread, but I missed a doozey!!!!:D:D
Steve that is some awesome welding!
Thanks for sharing all these photos and descriptions of an amazing build!!!
I'm stuck with welding chassis together as the jig has a frame on it at the moment so i decided to make a start on my 40 Ford dash, Its a fair bit wider than the T body and its usual to narrow them in the middle and recurve the ends.
I didn't want to narrow it so i cut it to length and will make new curved ends for it later.
One problem is with the 40 cluster is that its almost impossible to get a speedo and 4 small gauges in it, I've elected to fit just a speedo, oil pressure and water temp, my voltmeter and fuel gauge will be going elsewhere.
I made up a baseplate in 2mm stainless sheet and made the surround from 25mm x 5mm stainless bar, its made in 4 bits and welded at the corners. The baseplate is held to it by 8 x 3mm countersunk screws.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...y14th20101.jpg
Next up was the speaker grille which actually will house my radio instead, easy way out would of been to get a repro chrome 40 grille but i did that on my 32 and while it has classic looks i wanted something different so i set about making something that would reflect the lightening hole theme in the car, again i started with a piece of 2mm stainless sheet and marked out my design that just happens to be the same as my grill insert, more about that later.
The outside finisher is 15mm x 5mm stainless bar again welded in each corner and radiused, the sheet is then secured to the back of the finisher with small screws.
It hinges up for access to the radio, I wish i had kept the hinge templates from when i did my 32 as they would of saved me a lot of time making it all work again.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...y14th20103.jpg
Polished hinges are welded to the 2mm stainless baseplate and connect to a hinge plate that is welded to the inside of the dash.
i was originally going to polish both baseplates but thought i might get reflections that might dazzle me so both will be copper flake, I think it will also highlight the polished stainless edges better.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ly15th2010.jpg
I was originally going with small bullet shaped thingys in the small holes but i've now scrapped that idea as i just didn't like it when i put some in, now i will be going with small rivet heads.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...15th201015.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...y15th20102.jpg
Where the ends were cut off the cut went through the ashtrays so fill in pieces were made and welded in and smoothed off.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...14th201013.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...14th201014.jpg
There are quite a few holes to fill, some are stock but a fair few have been added by the various owners over the years.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...y14th20106.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...y14th20109.jpg
The original radio hole needed filling so i used the piece i cut from the top of the dash, no wastage here. The bar you see here is the hinge bar for the hinged opening grille.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...14th201010.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...15th201017.jpg
The piece was shaped to fit nicely and tack welded in place.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...15th201020.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...15th201021.jpg
Then fully welded and smoothed off
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...y15th20108.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ly16th2010.jpg
MATE.....mate how tall do you think we are?????
Stop lifting that damn bar higher and higher.....
We are struggling to take it all onboard all those neat little things you are building....
What supermarket sold you all that raw talent???? I need to go shopping there!!!!:LOL::LOL:
Once i finished the door handles i realised that i would need some matching door mirrors, found some the right shape but when i drilled the mirror arm the die cast was aweful, so decided to make some.
First a piece of 10mm stainless bar was drilled for the tail scallop, then it was cut in half so each half had a semi circle in it.
The upright is made from 6mm plate, all stainless is 316L
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...irrors26T2.jpg
Next the basic shaped was cut and ground with a 1mm cutting disc and a flap disc in a angle grinder. The other parts were cut out, drilled and turned ready for welding together, the parts were polished before welding so only the welds needed blending and fettling.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...irrors26T7.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...28july2010.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...8july20101.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...Mirrors26T.jpg
Next the edes were chamfered several times till a 50p shape was acheived, then the edges were soft sanded till smooth and radiused.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...irrors26T8.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...rrors26T11.jpg
The reverse side had to be hollowed out as this sit on a swage line so again the back was ground away to suit.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...8july20102.jpg
2 x 6.8mm holes were drilled and tapped 8mm for mounting studs, the long bolts are temporary and for holding during the polishing process.
All the parts were then TIG welded together, a fair bit of rod was used so i had something to get a nice radius with.
The finished Mirrors.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...rrors26T14.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...rrors26T15.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...rrors26T18.jpg
That came out fantastic! Keep them coming!
Be ready for lots of guys asking you where you got those Steve. Most of us can't fathom that a person can actually build something like a mirror. :D Very cool.
Don
Thanks guys, it took a while :( but i just couldn't find anything suitable on the shelf and as you know i do like a theme :D
Don i once made a door mirror for my old 29A coupe, one day a guy came up and asked where i got my mirror, I replied i made it, he said how, i replied that i took a hunk of aluminium and cut off all the bits that didn't look like a mirror :D the guy said thanks and wandered off.
Finally decided what to do with the brake backplates so i polished the outside rim and got my mate to chrome them, I will flake the centre bit, I think it will look better than a mass of chrome and give a bit of contrast.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...august2010.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ust20104-1.jpg
The other night i had a few hours spare so decided to pull the Tropic Aire heater apart that i had picked up at a swap in the states. First job was to take it apart for modifying and then off for media blasting.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...eHeater2-1.jpg
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...eHeater4-1.jpg
These things had massive fan motors in them so i chopped off the motor mount as i will be using a 6" fan/motor from a Gileera motorbike thats nice and slim and will reduce the heater thickness by half. I polished various bits and sent them to my mate for chroming.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...eHeater6-1.jpg
The body after blasting was primed with 2 coats of black epoxy primer and will be painted flake later with various other small bits. tabs were made up to held the motor assembly and the long tubes on the matrix cut down to a shorter length. removing the rear section also removed the support that held the matrix tubes so 2 small tabs were made and fitted with a grommet to support the tubes and were bolted to the heater body.
Chopping the tubes down meant losing the small beaded ends which stop the hose from blowing off so as i couldn't find my small beader roller i spun up a couple of brass rings on the lathe and soldered them in place.
