Yeah, I'm the Typhoid Mary of CHR. :o:LOL::LOL:

A few weeks ago i was playing one of my guitars (i'm also a guitar freak) and suddenly thought my Telecaster knobs would make great switch knobs if only a tiny bit bigger, you can buy them off the shelf but they are a bit small in diameter, while i was thinking about them i noticed some pearl insert things in Sue's crafting box , anyways i turned up some knobs in steel (didn't have any stainless the right size to hand) and recessed them to take the pearl thingys, I knurled the outside and dropped them in the chrome shop.
Got them back today so glued the pearl thingys in place, I'm pretty pleased how they came out :D

I mentioned earlier that my regulator cover had some blemish's i couldn't get out, next best thing was to cover them up
My good mate the Bigbossman is in printing and sent me these he knocked up, I mounted them on a piece of 1/16" polished stainless and will rivet it to the regulator cover, nothing like a bit of advertising is there

I could pat you on the back and tell you again what a true craftsman you are, but instead I'll point out that now we all know that your nice little tag is covering up some not so perfect chrome.....................:D And Steve, would you happen to know a good scrap man this side of the pond? I've got a load of hot rod junk that needs to be hauled off...........
And yes those are sweet knobs..........:D
:LOL::LOL: it don't bother me mate
looks good i have a basket case gibson l6 guitar rose wood board .looking at the grover machines and SD hummbucker pick ups the body is malpe thats pulling apart i think i gooing to break it at the glue joints and re use the old body .i have a new body that was made out of mahogany so i have pick ups machines two body and a neck that in very nice shape .i can not play but that not stoping me .. i thinking the guitar is were i want to be at small bit of paint work .wire work . some machine work .wood work. and when done will piss the neighbors off just like a old car
Very nice Steve, but you are going to be catching it from Sue for raiding her craft supplies. I thought I was high tech when I drilled and tapped some dice for knobs on my car..........then you have to come along and make me realize what a hack I reallly am. :o:D
Don
Finished it today Don

Once again nicely done Steve.
Well with the willys tucked up for the winter i managed to get back onto this project, been doing bits on it over the last couple of months but nothing worth posting, a lot of the time has been taken up in machining and porting & polishing the heads, they are away being bead blasted and then i can paint them.
The short motor is now together but i didn't take any pics as it boring stuff like gapping the rings etc etc.
Brief rundown of the spec is smoothed and polished crank, MTS H beam rods that were polished & shot peened and magnafluxed and fitted with ARP bolts, Pistons are KB hypereutetic and give 9.5-1 CR, Rings are Total Seal moly plasma. All were fully balanced.
I picked up a new water pump and removed all the various lumps & bumps and generally smoothed it all off, Then it got 2 coats of black Epoxy primer and 3 coats of 2K Moneyshot colour.
The steel shaft stub of the water pump boss stuck out slightly so a small rounded cover was added to the cover plate, only a small thing but it looks a lot tidier now.

.
One could eat off that engine, it's so clean!
Tomato sauce on the intake is the worst................probably too acidic..........
Eat off of it HEdoubleL, that thing is pretty enough to make love to.:rolleyes::LOL:
Jack.
Now Jack you can love your engine, just NOT LOVE your engine! :)
I didn't think i had taken any pics of the heads but found these on my I phone so excuse the quality.
What I started with, pretty crusty !!!

The heads have had a lot of work comprising of a full port and polish of the ports, chambers & valve throats, Also the pushrod holes have been opened up to 5/8" for the thicker pushrods and bigger valves fitted with uprated valve springs and teflon stem seals.
The AIR ports have been drilled and blocked off with NPT pipe plugs to avoid tubelence.

I dummied the heads & intake in place to check stuff and came across a couple of small problems to solve, firstly when the intake bolts are tightened down the washers bite into the paint This obviously don't look very nice so i made up some stepped washers in stainless, they still bite into the paint but now you can't see it

Next thing to address was the vacuum can on the dizzy, Its just zinc plated and will discolour quickly, beats me why MSD don't finish it better as the dizzy is nicely finished. I had a aluminium cover from Dickster but for some reason the MSD can is a bigger diameter so it didn't fit, sparked the lathe up and made one and blacked out the other bits.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...n26th20123.jpg
I also spun up a back finishing ring to finish it off.

The rear heater connection on a Cadillac comes out the rear of the head (quicker warm up) only problem was that its straight and would foul my firewall, The easy fix was to tap the hole deeper with a 1" NPT tap (luckily i had one as I wouldn't want to buy one these days) and add a 90 degree hose fitting, I gave it a little polish t remove the blue anodising.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...26th201212.jpg
Next little problem was the head bolts, I like to usually cover the heads with flathead chrome acorn nut covers but the Cadillac bolts are much bigger, the solution was easy 5/8" stainless acorn nuts bored out with a 55/64" drill gave them a snug tap fit over the heads, a bit of silicone will make sure they stay put.

Next job is to paint the heads & the adaptor plates, probabley gonna be white like the block etc but i'm wondering about flaking them ??? We will see.

Thanks for looking
Steve you put the C back in Custom! Nice little touches that just add to a "Made By Steve Custom." Sad thing is, people are gonna think you bought all the stuff ready made, not realizing it is all homemade custom parts. Love this thread!
I do actually have a question for once. How are you going to paint the space between the heads and the intake manifold? I found that I left it clean to get a good seal when I put my engine together then wonders how to finish it off without getting paint all over everything!
Nice work Steve!!!! People get so hung up looking for the right 'bolt on' that they really limit themselves on the things they can put into a build.
Great attention to detail, Steve!
Just went back through the latest pictures & words and have to say those stepped washers are super cool. I did not pick up on the way they sit initially, but like you say they still bite into the paint, but it's hidden by the overhanging step, which, by the way, is polished to a high luster... Great solution, and great execution. Like Steve Stovens said, I need to shop for a metal lathe!!
Absolutely brilliant work again Steve and your problem solving skills is outstanding and too the highest degree.
I still think Steve can improve on his prototypes, and have volunteered for him to send me his mistakes, as a quality control manager should! :)
I'm in awe, like the others, with your imagination and engineering skills, and your knowledge, and the execution of everything. Thanks for sharing. perley
Do you know anything about this one? There's one locally for ~$1200 range, essentially new...JET 9" x 20" BELT DRIVE BENCH LATHE BD-920W - NEW *with FREE LATHE STAND | eBay
Don't know about machine lathes, but do about Jet woodworking stuff. Top notch there. The guy who started Jet as a company used to work for Delta, before he separated from them and started Jet, I know their table saws and planers are very good quality. Just don't know about the machine tools!
