a 305 is not that bad of an engine, if you hate a 305 than you should hate a 454, they both have the same bore to stroke ratio. yes, 305's are very weak from the factory, but look at them, they have swirl port heads that don't flow nothing. camshafts that have little duration and lift. the motor itself is choked. put a decent set of heads, 220dur. cam and some headers and a 4 barrel and you can run 13's all day in f-body.
