305 Smallblock build

My buddy has a 94 chevy with a stock tbi 305 in i, he is wanting to build a good size engine for it using the stock 305 and carbing it, my question is are there any good 305 combos out there or could you reccommend a 305 build, he does plan to take it to the track about once or so every few months, it will be a weekend type driver, won't be driven much other than cruising and down the track. He wants in to have a pretty healthy sounding idle to it with good power also. Any help would be appreciated as I havn't built a 305 before.

I like that last 400 horse combo, but I think we should use a smaller cam than that, as we don't plan on rapping it to 7200 rpm's, and a little less compression because the combo used 10.6 to 1 if I read correctly.

A magazine called popular hotrodding did a 305 with vortec heads with comp 224/230dur flat cam, dual plane intake, holley carb and header and they made 370hp, it's kinda hard to believe they got those number with that small of a cam ,but it's worth a shot if your dead set on that 305 of yours, the article is called "Hate Me" good luck with your build.

I am hoping to get about 300 hp out of it.

We are thinking towards the comp cams xtreme energy 268 cam with a set of full port and polished 601 casting heads, with pro magnum roller rockers, about what size carb you think we should go with, would a 600 performer be fine, still undecided on the intake though, thinking of an edelbrock performer, performer rpm, edelbrock torquer, or a weiand xcellerator, the one with the straight runners, not the one that looks kinda like a torquer. We have a while to build it so surely we will decide on something. The 400 horse build looks nice but we don't need horsepower at 7200 rpms, thats the idea behing using a xe 268 cam, the 400 horse build used a 292 magnum.

The 305 engine is gonna be a lot of money spent. Your better off just going with a 350, they are a dime a dozen. The reason why 305's don't make much power is because of their small cylinder bores. You can't put anything bigger than a 1.94 valve in 'em because of that. The small bore will shroud the bigger valves. That 400hp build seems nice but look at the money put into it and consider a 350 would have made at least 50hp more with the same cost or even less done to it. Just my opinion, but then again I'm all about horsepower for buck. I'm more of a 400 small block kind of guy. :)

The only thing that makes a 305 a deal is the fact you can get perfect running 305s for free to 200 bucks and put less than 500 dollars into it and have 300 hp.
I recieved my 305 with a fresh .030 bore ,new pistons..10 under crank and balanced with a eddybrock intake and carb with rams horns for 75 dollars and you could still see the crosshatch in the cylinders.:3dSMILE:
This is my standard reply to the 305 dislikers,300 hp is good,it is more than all but the newest mustangs came with,ever drive a 5.0 thats only 200 to 240 stock at best and they scream.Ever drive a z-28 camero thats only 275 hp.The new car adds act like 300 hp factory in there new cars is boss,why aint it boss with 300 hp from a 305 ?:confused:

a 305 is not that bad of an engine, if you hate a 305 than you should hate a 454, they both have the same bore to stroke ratio. yes, 305's are very weak from the factory, but look at them, they have swirl port heads that don't flow nothing. camshafts that have little duration and lift. the motor itself is choked. put a decent set of heads, 220dur. cam and some headers and a 4 barrel and you can run 13's all day in f-body.

I built a 335" stroker in my elky......biggest cam I would run in a 305 is what I am running now...221@.050" 471" lift 108 lsa single pattern. lots of fun.
