Good to hear the brakes are working better, must be cruizin' time now!!!!!!
I'm always too impatient to mount the m/c, never think to paint them!
I had it out for several hours yesterday and It's a lot of fun. Definitely need those shorter shocks in front but they will be here Monday. ...and a heater! It was 35 degrees here so I was cruising in a coat but it was still pretty cool. I've got an old underdash heater from my 48; I think I'm going to pretty it up and use it.
This is a incredibly fun build to watch, Thanks so much for keeping up up to date with progress and pictures. That car has to be a blast to drive.
Thanks! I've been having a blast driving it this past week. Havent gone very far yet but I've had it out almost every day. Had a few minor issues but smooth sailing for the most part.
Gas gauge fixed; I had the wrong sending unit. I needed some kind of heater and the original one took up too much space under the hood. After looking at several different kinds of old heaters on ebay, I decided to go with this from good old JC Whitney. It's 7" square with a heater core and two speed blower and should tuck up under the dash nicely. I'll just have to build a little sheet metal piece to run some air to the defrost duct. Plus it's new and under $140.
That should do the trick! A heater is something I still need to consider. I don't drive it in the winter but if it had a heater I might!
What are the dimensions on that unit, Falcon??? Looks like a real compact size!!
probably run you out of there ...2 speed fan?? or reostat??
It says two speed but hasnt gotten here yet. I'll post a pic once I've got it in. Our local shows open next Friday at the Kirkwood Sonic; I hope to have it there!
I got my heater in this weekend and it works great. I used the controls from the 49 and a generic OReilys heater valve. I also got the cowl seal on (without it the back of the hood was rattling) and my friend Kyle was kind enough to buff the whole car for me. The old paint came out looking pretty decent.
Sure looks good all shine up Falcon, should make for a fun ride this summer!
A friend came by today; he was cleaning out his dad's garage after he passed away last year. His dad was a car builder and avid hubcap collector. He gave me a set of these for the car; I think they look pretty spiffy.
I agree! SPIFFY!!
Way kewl Falcon, 4 bar spinners add 15 hp to any build!!!!
Very nice!!!!
.
Did I miss the video of the shake down run yet been off and about in the life .
.
No, you didnt miss it, Bobby. I need to get my wife to do a ride along and shoot it for me.
Cool got in a work slump there for a while lol . Been lurking a lot .
.
love the caps,falcon..and the car looks a lot better with a shine on it,too..Amazing what a good buff will do..
Thanks, she's running great but I'm thinking about pulling the fuel tank back out and going with a fuel cell. I'm picking up a lot of rust out of the tank. I've got a filter before the pump and have clogged up 3 so far.
How about the old tow chain in the tank with a few gallons of fuel once you have it out of the car? I always heard that if you remove the float assembly, toss in a big old chain and shake the crap out of the tank it'll clean up the flaky rust. Then dump it all out, flush it good with a solvent, blow some air in to dry it and dump in a quart of good etching primer or rust encapsulator for another shake & dump. Seems like it ought to work, maybe even without the primer?
Yeah, I thought about that and priced a couple of different sealing kits but the price of fuel cells is reasonable enough that it's almost not worth the work of cleaning up an old tank. You can get a 15 gallon aluminum one with similar dimensions as the Mopar tank and a GM sending unit for about $125-$150. I got a couple more filters; I'll see if it gets any better before I pull the trigger.
Clogged up another one; I gave up and ordered a 15 gallon fuel cell today.
Where is the cheapest place to get them now? Summit or?
I found a new RCI 15 gallon cell On EBay with the GM sending unit for $115.
That isn't bad at all. If I can't get the 40 gal suburban tank to fit in the back of the frame on my Longhorn, I'm going to look at getting a fuel cell. For that kind of money, you can't mess with building one in my opinion.
I pulled the old tank and got the fuel cell mounted. Looks like it was a good move; I looked in the old tank with a flashlight and it was rusted pretty bad all the way around. Now I just need to run the fuel lines and the vent and we'll be back on the road.
Looks very nice! I may have to rethink my gas tank in my 40 for that kind of money. Good way to save $100 or so.
Well, after cruising the 51 around for the last few months I got a call from a HAMB member (dhcustoms) about wanting my car and working out a deal for a 49 Plymouth business coupe he had. After a few weeks of talking back and forth and exchanging pictures, I took the 51 to Cleveland and brought the 49 home yesterday. He wanted the bigger car to haul around more grandkids than the business coupe could hold. Dennis is a great guy to deal with, very honest, and he did an awesome job on this car. Im proud to be the new owner.
Neat looking car....but now about that wheezy flathead six........:D
Now I'm confused  You have 2 threads and it looks like you traded one Plymouth for another??? So which one do you have or is it both? I got to go sit down.**)
It's simple, The 48 Im building was originally a 47 but I got the 48 coupe body so it became a 48. Along the way i scrapped a 50 and two other 48s to sell for parts for the 47 which is now a 48, except for the other 48 that i built into a rat truck using the chassis from the 48 and a cab from a 54. I found the first 49 and got it roadworthy for a cheap cruiser but then i found the 51 so i scrapped the 49 for parts to build the 51, which i just traded for this 49. But I also still have the 48 which was a 47 along with the 49. Got it?
Who's on first?
Clear as mud!!!!!
