SWEET! That's got sleeper written all over it.. 8-)
Lookin' might fine Falcon!!! Going to be a blast cruizin' in a sleeper like that!!! Stance came out just right, looks like a renovated stocker!
Yes it is coming along SWEET
^ 3 , you sure have it looking great and as said sittin real purty .
.
That's what im going for; I like the stocker look with a few extra beans where it counts. You cant call a 318 "fast" but it will definitely have more get up and go than the 100 hp flattie. This is a great weekend to get stuff done in the garage; extra days off and this is my wife Christmas decorating weekend. I just pull the boxes of decorations out of storage and get the hell out of her way! Her and my youngest daughter are on a mission as soon as those boxes get opened.
We call this "Transformation Friday", as the day the house is transformed from "normal" to "CHRISTMAS!!!" My job is to get the boxes out (about 35 :HMMM:), set up the tree and get the lights working, and get the outside lights up (done two weeks ago on a 70F day!!) Getting started on the box movement now....
Got a few more things bolted on today; spent most of the day on my 48.
Wow, it really looks good Falcon! Keep up the great work.
That is looking great. I love watching this project come together.
Thanks, guys; Im really itching to fire this dog up and see what she sounds like. More stuff done; the grill and all the little panels behind it are bolted on, plug wires on, swapped to a Demon carb, accelerator cable and pedal done other than hooking it up to the carb, battery tray built and installed, and the radiator came in today. It looks like it's going to be a good fit; just need to build a mount for it.
Thats sweet falcon the pick back at 207 made look menacing with the black and white look. One heck of a Aluminum radiator .
The good news is; it's running and sounds great. The bad news; it's pumping oil out the rear main seal like crazy. I bought a Fel-Pro gasket kit from Summit and the seal that came with it did not look like the original one. I think the original was a rope seal and the replacement was a mechanical seal. I called Summit, they said it was right and checked with Fel-Pro and they insisted it was the retrofit seal. I went ahead and put it in even though it seemed like it was a little small in the groove. Im really aggrevated about this.:mad: So now I guess the motor comes back out.
Well, still a productive day! She runs and sounds good is always a good feeling.. sucks 'bout the oil seal tho.. Are you going to pull the motor because you cannot drop the pan because it will hit the chassis? Do you know of any parts houses in your area that sells something besides Fel-Pro? That's all that is available in my area, we used to have a different company around here called Detroit Gasket. I used them a few times and they worked ok...
We use rope packing at work for pump stuffing boxes. If you get stuck, PM me and I can get most any width.
Bad news on the bad seal, Falcon! Just one of the bad deals about having to put up with someone on a phone bank vs. talking with a tech who's actually doing this stuff everyday! Keep us updated, here's hoping you can get the correct seal without a whole lot of hassle!!!!!
I could get the pan off with the motor in the car but they had told me to put RTV on the back of the seal so I dont think I'll be able to roll it out from under the crank. I might have to pull the crank back out but Im hoping that's not the case. Still, it might be worth a shot to just pull the pan and try it. Pan has to come off either way.
falcon extra work is all and we know we don't like to do it if we don't have to . We i talked to Russ Martin in Cali about the nailhead he said one gasket it set from a manufacturer was the right one . Well got lucky and that is the one that came with the engine .
I use rtv a lot with some of the gaskets when in assembly , I also have some aircraft gasket sealant that is top notch Never have a leak but you will not save that gasket if it has to come off .
.
I can honestly say I've neve heard of anyone requesting RTV for a main seal! I'm not saying it isn't done nor it was or wasn't recommended.. I just haven't heard that one yet. The rear seal on my FE390 fit loose. It filled the void but wasn't snug like I would've preferred. I did put a dab of RTV on the seal end.. "just because" it made me feel better! :3dSMILE:
I think you could drop the pan and remove the seal with the motor in place.. depends on how much RTV was used to "glue" it in.. I'll cross my fingers and eat some ice cream for you!:LOL::LOL:
Dont feel bad; I dont fit under the car very well these days, either. I gained 12 pounds on that cruise this summer and still havent been able to get them off.
I just didnt feel like pulling that pan yesterday so I worked on other stuff. I got the grill and bumper back together and mounted my fuel and volt gauges. I had several 3/8" holes in the floor from the three differnt seats I had mounted when this floor was in the other car so I welded them up, hit all the edges with seam sealer, and gave it a final coat of paint. Finally I put it up on jack stands to pull the pan today. Back to work tomorrow; bummer.
Details, details, details!!!! Looks really nice Falcon! Hope things go right on getting the oil leak fixed today!
I got the old seal out; pretty easy, actually. I had the pan off and seal out in less than an hour. I cant see a thing wrong other than I think putting RTV on the back of the seal was bogus advice. There's little lumps of it stuck to the seal; that may have been causing the issue. Im going to put a new one back in the groove clean and see what happens.
And good news on getting the pan/seal out/off! I'm really curious what the next one is like. The fit and your confidence level in it is what I'm waiting for.
And, no-one can acuse me of being an old Mopar fan but I'm really enjoying your build! I really like the way the dash has come together! It should be a good looking ride with some muscle!
Cool, thanks! Im glad you guys are digging the old four door.
I bought a seal from Mopar Performance and this one fit much better. It's back together, running great, and no leaks! I also got my brackets made to mount the front brake calipers. Those water jet machines sure do some slick cutting.
Falcon good news on the seal .
.
I like NO LEAKS :)
No leaks is good!!! Good to hear you have things working your way!
Now we can SMOKE some tires
Hah! We got a bit to go before tire smoking but it's getting closer! Now that I've got a running engine I figured I'd finish up the front end work since it's up on stands. I started trial fitting the Explorer front brakes tonight and everything worked out good. I needed some spacers between the new plate and the caliper bracket so I drilled the threads out of some 1/2" nuts and they worked real nice. Other than that it was pretty much a bolt on. Now to clean everything up, paint the brackets and put it back together for good. I've also got a heavy duty sway bar from a Grand Cherokee that looks like it will fit good once I make some mounts for it.
Brakes and tie rods are on, now just need to run the brake lines to the calipers and I'm ready to bleed the system. He's the Jeep swaybar next to the original; about twice the diameter. It should help handling quite a bit.
Good find on the sway bar. That should be one of those hidden upgrades that adds so much to the total project and you'll rarely think about it until you stuff it into an exit ramp at 60 and it won't scare the pants off of you!:D
Thanks, I have to credit one of the guys on the P15D24 site for coming up with that idea and the Explorer disc brake swap. The only drag on the front brakes is that the stock wheels wont fit over the calipers but it's not a big deal. I'm just going to run stock wheels and hupcaps so I'll pick up some later model ones from the boneyard.
I finished plumbing the brakes tonight, just need to bleed them. I got some front shocks ordered so I fugure I'll wait until I've got them mounted before I mount the sway bar. I also found this cool old tach on Evilbay, I painted it to match the dash and I think it looks pretty spiffy.
SPIFFY! :3dSMILE:
Kinda looks like one of the old Dixco tachs, anyway, great find and it fits the car just super!!!!!
I think it was a Dixco, Dave. Didnt get much done over the holidays other than a 1/2 day trip to the boneyard for supplies. I'm off for 9 days starting Saturday so I'm hoping to wrap up a lot of stuff and get down to where all I need for a road test is getting a driveshaft made. Now that I've got the sheetmetal on this car and the 48 Ive been able to start throwing out, giving away, and selling stuff I wont need. The garage is actually getting some more walking space and that's most welcome.
Well, you're doing better then me, Falcon!!! Haven't even been in the garage since Friday and even now haven't convinced myself to turn up the heat and go do some work!!!!!:LOL:
As with all Holidays, I've sat around too much and ate too much so I'm in search of some ambition, then (maybe) I'll get back to work!!!
Me too on the food, Dave. I got back to work yesterday and could barely button my pants. Time to cut back and hit the gym.
I was going to have to run 3 relays (fuel pump, ignition, and cooling fan) so I pulled this from a Dakota while I was at the boneyard. This gave me all the relays with fuses and puts it all in one convienient spot. Plus just the one power supply wire off the battery prewires all of the line sides so it'll keep things tidy once I've got it all wired.
Great idea on the Dakota fuse/relay block! Very smart idea.
Thanks, Roger; being a cheapskate has it's advantages! I got my sway bar finished up today along with wiring up the fuel pump relay and some other misc wiring. I've been sicker that a dog since last week and am just starting to feel human again. I worked in the garage about three hours and I was wiped out. Im off the rest of the week so hopefully we'll make a little better progress tomorrow and Friday.
