Great to see this project back in play again, Ryan!! Looks like maybe it used to have shorter rear springs with the shackles running through the frame rails? Guess it doesn't matter since you're going 4 link this time, right?
Will be interesting to watch how you "unhack"
the front part of the frame. With all the work involved it makes that $2K perimeter chassis posted on ebay a couple of years ago look more attractive but I haven't seen it listed for a while. I'm sure yours will be plenty strong when you're finished plus you'll get to say you did it yourself!!

Take lots of pics!

Frame looks good and solid Ryan! Like a lot of us you seem to have to divide your time among multiple projects, someday I'm going to do just one at a time start to finish!!!!! Randy, yes sir. It's getting triangulate four link in the rear with air bags front and rear. I think I purchased front boxing plates a while ago, so I think those might be able to give me a profile to reshape the front of the frame. You're so correct about that perimeter frame. I actually called them this spring, and by the time I got a basic frame with body mounts, MII cross member set up with tubular control arms, it was $3500 and 6-8 week lead time. Probably not bad, but not as attractive as the $2500 eBay price.
Dave, yeah, I get going on one and then want to make changes and go a different direction. I like you think that someday I might stay on one project. But I don't know when that'll be. I keep seeing hot rods and muscle cars roaming around and I got depressed and decided there's still some hope for the 40 before snow flies. Plus then I can keep working on small stuff or whatever. I'm sure it'll never be done as I always see something that I'd like to have or adapt to.Ryan

Some light progress on the 40 frame. I got my rear end power steamed/washed off and drained before I went on vacation. While I was gone my youngest brother installed a stiffner and removed the stock rear suspension cross member. He also started boxing the rear cross msmber. This morning I cut out the old in frame shackles and the other under frame spring shackle brackets. I made some boxing plates and began the prep. I got some holes welded on the inside and then welded the RH plate on. I still have some of the bottom to do. Tomorrow hopefully I can finish the left side and then fit the gas tank to see how I want to reinforce the corners of the rear of the frame. I have to decide where to add the center support bars for my X member so I can remove my bracing as well.

Today I got a late start but was able to get some stuff done. I got the LH rear boxing plate welded on the top and tacked on the bottom. I sat my gas tank in there to get a look at what clearance I have. There is a lot from what I can tell without the body on. For now, my plan is to box the back portion of the frame behind where I stopped, but go from the lower lip straight up under the top frame lip so the tank can still be angled and dropped out.

I think I've changed my mind on my plan of attack too. I had planned on cleaning up the bottom side of my floor and painting it, then sticking the body back on the frame after I painted areas of the frame. Now I'm back to reality.
I'm going to have to place the body on the frame after I get the rear suspension brackets tacked on, and check axle placement. At this point I'll have to fix my front suspension, re-install the engine and trans, then finish my trans cross member and X member connector junctions. I will also have to squeeze my brake pedal set up in there and then make the according floor mods. Also, I'll have to add a C notch to the rear frame rails after I have the rear axle placed where it needs to be. Then remove the body, and paint everything. There's still a lot left to do. This doing stuff correctly and in half way backwards order is a PITA!

I would like to replace my tank and get a larger one. Thanks for the pictures of the mounts that helps. Is your tank, stock size or larger? Do you know if they add the extra gallon or so on by making the bottom lower? If so, I have a hitch to contend with. Keep on working, you are doing good.

Scooting, how have you been? Good I hope.
This tank is a 16gal tank from Tanks Inc. Stock size is I believe 14gal and I believe you're correct in they extend the bottom of the tank down to get the extra capacity. I can measure my original tank to give you an idea how far it will hang down. My car had a hitch but I removed it. If we go on any long trips we'll need a second vehicle to help haul our little circus anyway.
Here is a link for the tank on their site.

I didn't have enough time today to get anything done to the car. Maybe tomorrow.Last edited by 40FordDeluxe; 08-13-2014 at 12:14 PM.

I haven't had any extra time to touch the 40. But I have been searching for images of 40's getting ideas and just trying to see how different things look on them I haven't seen before.
Here is a 40 I found on ebay and it happens to have the wider rear fenders. They don't look as hideous as I thought they would look on a sedan. I have a set of these and plan to use them to use the same size tire I have but get it away from the body and still be able to have the car low to the ground.Ryan
