Be careful after fans and heaters it's cabin filters! :)
Got the air filter finished last night, as I said earlier due to the carb change things had got very tight !!! We are talking every 1/8" counted.
Got the base spun up on the lathe, then the 5.125" hole was put in on the faceplate as the hole is off centre to keep as much of it as possible inside the scoop opening. A 3/8" thick ring was formed around a bit of 5" tube and welded to the base to lift it slightly for clearence, not sure what sort of aluminium it was but it turned real nasty like toffee and welded horribly as well, it would weld nice and then not so !!!

There was no room on top for a securing nut thingy so it had to be a countersunk bolt, this screws into a piece of hex bar on top of the regular 1/4" unc stud.

Here it is finished, you can see its a little tight on space but will get a nice flow of air, next job is to extend the front of the scoop slightly.
While I was there is turned a nose on each carb stud to help putting the nuts on easier.

Good post, it's the little things you do that sets your work apart from others.:):)
Jack.
Bit more progress today, mostly been repairing fibreglass but while i'm glassing up I generally plan other things in my head, one of these was where to pu the boost gauge where it would be easily seen, I put the one in my Coupe near the column but its not easily seen so a small mistake, anyway I thought what screams street racer ??? Yep scuttle mounted gauges !!!
I already had a Stewart Warner 2.062" gauge so looked around for a mounting cup but couldn't find anything suitable, didn't want chrome or black, I started to make one out of a piece of stainless tube but eve with a brushed finish it didn't look correct so I started to make up from some aluminium bits from the scrap bin.
After a bit of lathe work I welded the bits together and blended & fettled the welds.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...psvqnqv6w2.jpg
Its held in place with 3 small studs, 2 holes were drilled through the base so the lighting wires and boost tube are not seen. It will get vapour blasted and have a cast appearance.

Your work is amazing, VERY sweet build.
Ah Steve, I so enjoy your periodic posts. I do believe you could pick up a dead rat off the wharf and in short order turn it into art........
They seem to be breeding, oh look identical twins

Hey Steve, you gonna run two speedo's on toppa yur hood ? They was a chappie wanted to buy one of those fancy speedo's of ya yo know.
Awesome work on it all! Those gauge holders are a work of art!
Update on the gauge pods, I always intended to put in a stiffener plate but couldn't decide what shape, Did a few doodles on cardboard and ended up using this one. I might run a weld around the base yet, i'm undecided.

....and the second pod's going to hold....? Did I miss a post? They look retro-custom and unique, for sure!
I really like the base plate. I was wondering what you were going to use to keep them from cracking the hood. I figured you had some thing up your sleeve. Also, in the pics of your air cleaner base build, what are the aluminum tubes with the 6 bolt(?) flanges that were sitting on the back of the bench for? Those look like great pieces that will lead to something cool too.
Something else the carb change affected was the scoop, Its now been extended 2.25" and I altered the shape of the opening slightly.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ps4l19gquu.jpg
While I was extending the scoop I decided to add a finisher around the opening, this is made in 1/4" stainless rod and curved around an old alternator pulley. Once I had the shape I looked around Ebay for some mesh but couldn't find anything I liked, suddenly it came to me :D !!! I still had the offcuts from the aluminium Fairlane grille , Now you know why I never throw anything away !!!
Dug them out but not long enough to go the full width so I decided to weld the 2 halves together. I sanded the joint to a perfect fit and tig welded it, a little clean up with a file and it looked fine. A quick trim up and it was all fitted and dandy, matches the front grille, got a little bit of making good at the front but will do that later.

Well that will keep birds and small children from getting sucked in!
As usual "Great job".
Been thinking about the sides of the bench seat, i've had the ply templates on there for a while now, had a root through my aluminium scrap and found some 2mm sheet so came up with new sides, a bit of hole sawing and a few rivets and viola !!!

Nice. I like the way you're continuing a theme throughout the build. Those seemingly little details bring it all together.
Yep very nice theme going on here! I still want to see the rocket gauge light up when reving!
That scoop looks great. The trim piece with the grill screen looks aweome! I was thinking I wonder if he'll make a grill for the scoop and then blam. You sure did. The seat brace looks killer. Keep up the great work.
Got a couple of pm's asking how I made the seat sides, I thought it was obvious but thought I would explain further.
I rough cut the shape out of a sheet of 2mm 6 series aluminium sheet, this is a harder & stiffer flavour that doesnt like being folded, If you wanted to put folds in you would use a softer flavour like a 5 series, I cut it outside with a cutting disc, then took the more manageable bits inside, started with jigsaw but thought I would give the Cut50 plasma cutter a go as I already had the plywood template, It cut all 4 pieces out in about 20 mins and left a decent edge that was cleaned up quite easily with a 80 grit flapwheel.
They are made in 2 pieces as you can see in the pics, the relevant holes were drilled and hole sawed, the rear upright and lower holes are actually 6mm stainless coach bolts with re profiled heads as they attach the sides the rest are solid rivets, The edge that is seen is welded and then smoothed to a bull nose shape. I then finished it all in a brushed finish.
Thats about it really, I've also added a pic of the riveting tools, nothing complicated. Hope this explains.

Where does a guy get the rivet tool kit? It looks like the Cut50 did a great job.
Ryan my Cut50 is a cheap chinese plasma, When I bought it about 7 or 8 years ago everyone said it would be rubbish, I use it every day and its always been fine, go figure !!!
I thought at £170 if it lasted a year I would get my moneys worth from it.
I get my rivet tool parts from here Rivet Gun Punches | Brown Aviation & Aircraft Tools But I didn't buy their expensive Air hammer, I just bought a cheap Ebay air chisel, does the same job.
.
Where does one buy a stainless left hand thread coach bolt?
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...psjgfjm0vn.jpg
It's what was shown in the picture....
Wow, good catch on the threads.
Ok, now let's hear some jokes from the left..
Sometimes it's the little things, lol..
