Low Cost HVLP Paint Gun Advise

Many years ago I went through auto body school and was blessed to be one of the top three students, worked at a shop for three months, then had to retire at age 25 because of a long time disability. All I have is a Sharp siphon gun. I have a 60g air compressor but would need a air drier.

In 2001 I built a 66' Ford 427 Shelby Cobra replica, did all the body & paint work, and everything else except for machining the engine. So I do have experience. I don't really need a full size gun to paint what I'm intending to paint. I really don't want or afford a high dollar gun.

I'm wanting to paint my engine, trans etc, chassis, suspention, not the car, and light projects around the house. So I'm looking for real good quality guns at low prices.

By quite amount of users that bought Harbor Freight's guns, like them. When looking at Amazon, there are a lot of manufactures I've never heard of, so it's difficult to to weed out the trash guns.

I'd like to get you guys that have experience, with the lower priced guns.

With my first engine back in 2002 I sanded the iron block smooth and painted it my custom mixed blue body color.

So, what's your thoughts on guns ?

I've used the harbor freight guns a few different times and they work really well for suspension and priming IMO. I don't feel bad having to toss one if I get paint all over it or whatever. The only complaint I can say is the paint will come out of the vent and around the threads where the cap screws on. I wait until they're on sale for around $15 and buy a couple. I have a Sata I use for body stuff. I can't remember the model of it right now.

I bought an HLVP from Eastwood for $129 several years ago that has worked great; painted a few cars with it.

I'll ad this first. I do have a thread about my car build in which I asked a question about what color should I paint my block, if different than my body color. I started this one to get opinions for gun's, which I may not get painters there that I need.

Ok, like I mentioned, the psrts I need to paint are the block, trans, etc along with household projects, not complete cars.

I do have a nice Sharpe suction gun that worked very well at that time. I never sprayed to get runs, dry areas, orange peal etc.
I used acyrlic enamel back in those days. However, I did use for laying down my epoxy primer, sealer, but used my friends HVLP gun for the top coat on my 427 Cobra. I did have some light orange peal though. Quick fix.

If,.....I bought a little bit better and cost for a gun, I may buy the Eastwood. Which model ?

    Links would help a lot.

Which HF guns (with model #) did you guys use ?

    Well, I'll bump my thread....lol

I think with the way I am, I'll spend a little more money than I wanted.
Unless I hear differently from you guys, the performance of the Eastwood Concourse Pro 2 gun with accessories, in the very nice aluminum case looks great. Great to store all of the parts for a DIY's garage. With this kit, alll I should need then is a drier, maybe a stand (or make one) cleaner and paint filters etc.

On sale on their site for $229

    ($100 less than other websites)

    Rule of thumb:

Don't get the cheapest or the most expensive.

Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

Ok, I can't guess how many guns I have, a bunch and they range from Harbor Freight all the way to Sata guns and I will give you my opinion, and that alone. If you are spraying high metallic paint, your better guns are going to help you get away from tiger striping the base and are needed, using somewhere in a 1.3-1.4 tip. If you are spraying non metallic or non pearl paint you can get away with a cheaper gun. I love HVLP guns, siphon feed guns I no longer use and as far as I know HVLP guns are all gravity fed I believe. If you are spraying heavy primer you will need the 1.8-2.0 tip so I use another gun for primer.
My favorite gun is my Sata, after using one you don't need to explain why, however my favorite all around lower price gun is a Sharpe Finex gun, easy to clean and great gun capable of spraying metallics, using a drop coat.
If you aren't using a hvlp you are wasting a bunch of paint and its not cheap so it may pay to switch if you haven't as well as much less drift and overspray. This is my two cents alone but yes I have used a harbor freight gun with decent results but a tiger striped paint job is expensive to fix if its high dollar metallic paint, the Finex I would be comfortable using and I wouldn't the harbor freight gun. I like Dennys choice he showed with the Devilbiss set, it covers it all and is inexpensive. Most paints don't recommend a airless gun on automotive paint.
The major thing is learning the proper way to clean the gun, just running thinner threw after your done will result in a ruined gun the next use, this I have learned, the proper way to adjust a hvlp gun is a great thing to read up on as well, they will last a long while if cleaned properly
Good Luck I am no expert but have had good luck and enjoy painting. Matt

Which gun from this Sharpe list on Amazon ?
I still have my first gun, a Sharpe suction from 30 years sgo. I liked it and was low cost.

Also, I only want a HVLP.
