How many rattle cans of primer and top coat would cover a big block, steel bell and Tremec trans ?

I've painted several 5.9 cummins engines and I usually use 2 cans of primer and 3 to 4 of paint depending how nice you want it. So you might be looking at 4 to 6 cans of paint?

I figured 3 to 4 cans of epoxy primer and the same for the top coat. The VHT prices are from $10 to $13 per can.
So, I think I'll do it right and buy a gun.

After more research, I may try this company for the paint and maybe,.....their 3 gun kit. I don't need a expensive gun for painting the block, bell, tranny and small jobs around the house.

Or spend a little more for a better brand that I know from the,....old days.

I'll offer that you don't need the VHT paint for your engine & tranny. A good quality primer and compatible top coat will serve you well at half (or less) the cost of the VHT coatings. There're lots of engines painted with epoxy primer & base coat, clear coat or single stage running around. The difference is that rattle can paint is reduced more to flow through that tiny orifice, making it harder to control runs and sags.

I'm confused. Which do you mean, use a paint gun to shoot normal primer and top coat or use any lower cost rattle can brand ?

If you choose to use rattle cans, you do not need to pay for high temp coatings good for up to 2000F. You can buy Rustoleum Engine Paint for $4 a can and it will do just fine - https://www.zoro.com/rust-oleum-engi...oPhg&gclsrc=ds
