I've been racking my brain trying to decide on what to do for fuel tank(EFI) on my 36 truck. Then a thought came to me in the myriad of other thoughts for the day. One huge fuel tank to fill the entire bed. 45.5X61X3deep (exept on cab end I can drop down an additional 6 inches for the length of fuel pump). Then set the bed side angle strips on top of the tank. Maybe even figure out a way to attach bed wood or find someone real good with an air brush to paint 'looks like wood' design on tank...then add strips. I'll lose 3" of bed this way but still be able to use it.

If I place a tank between the rails at the rear....that sucker will hang down way too much for my liking....or be very small (12 gallons or less)

What do you think?

Well.....It's certainly different, that's for sure. It does sound like a cool idea though! I imagine it'll need some baffles in it to keep fuel from sloshing around, but it sounds doable.

I recently built 2 tanks of aprox 8 gallon each for a 32 ford---they fit inside the frame rails on each side of the drive shaft and basicly straigt down from the seat area--

For your deal---how would two vertical tanks down the inside of your bed work????? I would be hesitant to use the tank top as the bed bottom---

I have less than 5" either side for fuel tanks down the side. But I have concidered two tanks. One inside the rails at the rear that will hang down a couple inches below the bed box, attatched with a hose (sounds unsafe?) to a tank filling the void below the bed infront of the forward link brackets. Now I'm wishing I hadnt aimed the driveshaft loop up. At the time all I was thinking about was using up the void under the bed.

I may call NSRA tomorrow and find out theyre stipulation regarding fuel hoses. I really wanted to get this truck to pass NSRA saftey inspection.

What is the dimensions of those tanks? How did you plumb them together?

i did a tub out 57 chevy pickup built a steel fuel safe for a fuel cell built a frame out of 1by1 tubing to hold below the wood bed and built a batter box that slid on a rack with pins and was bolted so if you need to get at the batter you unbolted the bolt pull it 1 inch off the pins and it would come out all of it was painted a body color and all was above the roll pan the owner made up a filler neck up that was flush with the deck like a boat filler neck

You must have a lot more room in the 57 Pat? I have concidered something similar....adding a sort of valance at the rear to hide the biggest part of it like Steve's 36 in Washington.

I've done similar to Pat- I've got a tilt bed with a cell mounted to the frame and made a custom surround with an access door mounted to the bed so it's movable. (Tilt bed is only for tire removal purposes) Wood will completely surround the tank cover. Your full bed idea is neat but I'd think in the event of an accident you'd be in serious danger. JMO

You will not like the results of having a 3" deep tank when it's 3/4 full and you're going up a grade.

I don't know how deep your bed is, but let's say it's 20". You could build a tank side to side the width of the bed and as tall as the bed up against the cab and still have most of the bed to haul stuff. Let's say it stuck back from the cab 6". A tank 45.5" X 20" X 6" would hold 23 1/2 gallons. The bed floor would be 45.5 X 55. That should be enough room to haul 4 small block Chevies.

I like that...it goes with them big meats. I was trying to save as much bed space as I can though. Plan on making long trips with the truck to visit all of you guys abroad at car shows. Or at least thats the plan.

Ha. I like it. I'll add that to my thoughts too. I had concidered doing a tank behind cab....but then decided to move it all the way to the rear for better weight transfer....but then realized my wife is only 5'3" and the little lady is going to have trouble reaching stuff in the center of the bed, from the sides. Shhhhh. Here she comes.

that car is done it in a buick T type with a 5 speed lenco it was a zz502 engine i built to a540 bbc not much let of the zz502

By the way. The frame has a 6 inch kick to it.

Made this up to sort of give an idea what I meant. I'll make one for what I vision yours to be like Tech, in the morning. My eyeballs keep rolling back in my head. Getting tired.

Why would the tank be dangerous in an accident? Just curious.
