Turn off SH 3 at the seven mile junction and head for Taumaranui.

I've driven a full size (44 seater) bus full of townies through there...a very quiet trip.
Not from terror; all the comments were "Wow!" and "Look at that!"
On another occasion I drove a Garden Group out to the Whangamamona pub for tea.
The trip in was in daylight, but it was around 9:00 pm when I drove them out again.
That was hard work; one of the toughest jobs I've done.
It's as black as a bank manager's heart in there; I could see absolutely nothing in my mirrors, so didn't know where my back axle was in relation to the edge of the road.
So I had to 'exaggerate' every corner to ensure I didn't put a back wheel over a 300 ft drop...or slam it into a papa cliff on the other side.
When I got to the old Douglas factory I stopped.
Told them I was going to get out and have a smoke...I'd earned it...they could do what they liked for ten minutes.
And that one was a Tonka Toy bus...a little 28 seater!
Wouldn't like to drive a full size one over that road in the dark.

I believe you on how tiring driving a bus on that road would be John. I was going to do the Forgotten Highway last time I was down your way but from Stratford up to Taumaranui on the way home from Magoo's first open house day but got as far as Hawera for the night which was to be two as I also wanted to visit a museum just out of town that I have heard is a must see. Well my kidneys decided it was time to play up again so all I want to do was get home as quickly as poss. The Taranaki area is one place I need to get to again and explore further, I have climbed to the top of that hill by the power station and enjoyed the light show at the gardens at night but I sure there is so much more I would enjoy seeing. I have been told that driving the Forgotten Highway from the northeast to the south west is the best way to enjoy it so that is what I will do. My other intention is to drive it in my Bucket as I believe the road is all tarsealed now.
That museum you mentioned would be Nigel Ogle's Tawhiti Museum, yep; a must see.
Allow four hours or more.

Whoever told you the Forgotten Highway is tarsealed all the way is telling you porkies...it's tarsealed from Stratford to Whangamamona...but from there on...it's metal.

There's not a lot of gravel road there,though,, and it's not a bad road,otherwise Dave Kindberg wouldn't have taken the purple slug through there last year,on the way to Turangi..Quote:

The Forgotten Highway mustn't be to bad if Dave drove his car over it as when I was looking at the photos Clive took of it beside some cars at Turangi this year, I was impressed with just how low the whole car is ....Awesome colour too....

Well I drove a Redimixt truck.
Well I drove one of four Redimixt trucks.
Well I drove it for one of three eight hour shifts...so I drove 'my' truck once a day.
Well I had some input!
One of the most boring jobs ever; eighteen loads/shift over the same half mile...
Came pretty close to rolling the truck on that job...my own fault...bored, inattentive, excess speed...because of the mud we kept the diff lock in permanently...that was what saved me...I could power it back on to ten wheels again.
Pretty close though but!
