Actually, most states require a permit to carry a concealed weapon, and in most instances it is not a walk in and walk out procedure. I believe rightfully so. In PA, a concealed weapon permit is required as well, but no license is required to openly carry a firearm throughout the state, with the exception of Philadelphia. (Where carry some kind of weapon (even a pea shooter) would be advisable in most cases.:LOL: ) In PA obtaining a concealed weapon permit still requires paperwork and you must be free of any felony convictions, but otherwise, the restrictions are not hard to overcome.

Concealment in most states means exactly that and in total. Violation will usually bring arrest. People in risky businesses, like Ken, should have the means to protect themselves if they so desire it. If Ken lived in Maryland, the likely hood of his having a concealed permit might be very low. In Pa, it would be no problem. The disparity from state to state can be confusing and problematic, but that what makes this country unique.

It's not just disparity from state to state, around here it's county to county. In LA county it's virtually impossible to get a carry permit. In Orange county you can get one, but it's not easy. In Kern county it's much easier to get one, yet if you do get one it's good for the entire state....go figure....

We have a unique set of laws here in Arizona. Open carry is legal by anyone. Left over from the cowboy days I guess. You can also go to a training class and earn a concealed carry permit if you wish. This includes a thorough FBI background check, so that hopefully no nut cases slip through the cracks. You can refresh the permit each 4 years, by attending class again. It is drilled into you not to brandish your weapon indiscriminately on penalty of arrest and jail time. If you encounter a situation, you can reach for the weapon and put your hand on it, ready to pull, but you had better not be yankin' it out and pointing it at anyone unless you intend to pull the trigger. You also cannot carry into any establishment that serves alcohol or any establishment that is posted "no guns". There was a case here that I remember. On the freeway, a driver we will call the harassee made a stupid move and cut off another car, the harasser. The harasser proceeded to make threatening moves on the harassee. The harassee pulled a pistol and held it up to show the harasser that he was armed. He didn't point the pistol at the harasser, just held it up to show it. Apparently, the harasser knew the law better than the harassee. He got on his cell and phoned the police. When the harassee arrived home, he was promptly arrested and carted off to the gray bar hotel.

For over 20 years, I owned and operated a courier service which, on occasion, took me to questionable places at late hours. I researched at the FBI and found out that I could saw off a 12 ga shotgun, 27 inches overall length, with an 18 1/2 inch barrel. I sawed off my Winchester pump and cobbled up a fixture that mounted to the dash and the transmission hump, sort of like you see in a police car. To me, that was the best of all protection.

To answer those of you who are concerned with a pistol round going through walls and killing neighbors, get yourself a .45 caliber weapon. The .45 round was designed by John Browning to be slow and very powerful, like being hit by a slow bus. You're goin' down. The round is designed to expend all its energy within the body.

I just hate the thought of the whole dang country deteriorating to the state that the only one's safe are those who carry a gun.... I had my fill of guns, shooting, and killing many years back.... I hated it then and I hate it even more now!!! No one will ever convince me that carrying a concealed weapon is a good way to "ensure domestic peace and tranquility".... I guess I look at things differently then most. My final thought and I'll get the heck off this thread so others can celebrate this supposed victory in the Supreme Court... I hope none of you ever have to shoot someone face to face---and live with that memory everyday for the rest of your life........

Dave, let me say this and I'll get off here also, when I came upon this site I looked forward to checking it each day. I have always like your sense of humor, and your knowledge of cars. I have checked your gallery and you will see that I complimented you on your work. I know when you are good at something you really don't need to have someone tell you but I do it anyway. So lets get back to talking about cars and let us know how your granddaughter is doing.:)

I'm happy to see the tone is calming. Dave I totally respect your veiw's having friends who served in Kuwait, the last thing I ever want is to take someone's life, right after not having someone take mine.

Since you asked try John Lott's "More Guns- Less Crime" second edition. He used data from the federal govt. collected over a 10 year span and covers every county in the U.S.. If nothing else it's interesting reading, it shows that crime reduces within 1-2 years in counties after carry laws are enacted while surrounding counties without carry crime increases. In the second edition he covers all the criticism from the first edition.

This is one of those topics where opinions are strongly formed, and no amount of discussion or logical thought from either side is likely to change minds.

So, I've stated my opinion, and I'm done with the topic. No hard feelings with those who take the other side.

No, I'm for it , but you should have to qualify for it, back round check and just common sense.

Yep, that's what I did. FBI check, fingerprints, training course. I also took a course in combat pistol training on my own.

Sorry I misunderstood your position.

The trouble with conceal carry lisence in any state that suggests you cant brandish the weapon without using it......anyone that carry's a weapon is at the mercy of everyone around them. To explain: anyone that has a grudge against someone with a conceal carry lisence simply has to lie and tell the police they were threatened by the said individual. Here in Arkansas, I believe it can be jail time. I too worry about a country where everyone doesnt feel safe without a sidearm. Makes you really think.....what will things be like 20 years from now for our kids.

That the last from me on the subject. I like my guns.....but I like my cars better.

Here is something for people to think about every 17 minutes a person is killed in this Country by a drunk driver. That should be a major concern.
