a Q jet would help the MPG but maybe hard to find a good one or core to rebuild. there not hard to rebuild there is guys that will sell you a rebuilt one BUT if you did not go that way a carter or eldelbrock 750/800 cfm would do fine for your rpm . you get it 1/2 running rigth your hands will be full or your pants did you ever run it with out the air cleaner? the air horns are not getting shut off? from the top lid?
