    Ford automatic overdrive identification.....

Ok, I'm NOT an automatic transmission guy.... But I did end up with an automatic overdrive to put behind my 351W in the pickup---just not having any luck finding a site to decode the tag and see what I have for sure....

The pan has "metric" stamped into it, if that means anything.

    I got the tag off of it;

    Top line: PKA EA
2nd line:043088---I assume this is the date of mfg, April 30, 1988
    3rd line: E9AP EB

Could someone direct me to a site that has the information on what the trans is (I think it's an AOD)

Also, while it's out of the car I'd like to do some service on it. I know to replace the front and rear seal and the filter and fluid... Any suggestions on what else I should check out??

    Thanks in advance!!!!!

    Dave,
The PKA denotes an AOD, non-computer controlled. An AOD-E would be PKC. I found this explanation, too, substituting your designators (you did not have a date code):
    PKA...Transmission model
    EA...Service I.D. level
    043088 ...Serial number
    K25... Build date N/month..25/day (Nov 25th)
    E9AP EA...Assy part number Prefix/suffix..

Thanks a bunch Roger!!!!! Main thing I needed to know was that it was not computer controlled (the controller is about $700.00), so I'll be ok there, I guess! How do I tell if it's a lock-up or non-lock-up converter? One of the local repair shop guys said I might have to do something about that??????

You will also need a tv cable....no, not Time/Warner or Cox! but the tv cable that runs from the trans linkage to the carb or throttle body. It must be adjusted properly or you'll burn up the trans in a couple of miles!

Thanks Randy, just was doing some reading on the TV cable in the links Mike gave me. My C6 needs a bit of work and I was given this AOD (with only 37,000 miles on it), should help the fuel mileage on my old pick-em-up a bit, I hope. The truck is going up for sale soon as it's done, if it were a keeper it would already have a 5 speed in it, I just hate to go "shiftless" this late in life!!!!!

Mike--Lots of good info in the link, thanks for hooking me up!

I dunno about ford, but Chevy 700R4 overdrives have a lockup which can be controlled either with a toggle switch on dash plus a kill switch on brake pedal, else spend the money for a B&M electronic controller. They'll also run with no control, but you sacrifice economy, and it generates heat.

Glad to help Dave. I've known about the site for a couple years but recently become engrossed in it as I lost OD in mine and I think it's time for a re-do..

The AOD-E has electric control to lock out OD and the convertor can be equipped with or without a lockup feauture.

If I had the room I'd go 4R-70W and use a controller to dial in all the shift points.
