    Torque Converter

Well I should be getting the engine back from the machine shop any day now and will be ready to put this Nova back together. Had the trans checked out and repaired. Found out that the 2800 stall converter was a 3500. The cam specs recommend a 2800. The car is for street use mainly. Is the 3500 too much for the sreet?

Well from what I have read thus far, a torque converter is a special thuingy. They are rated at say 3500rpm for a certain tq, if you have more than that amount of tourqe then they will spin sooner, so I guess it depends on what type of power you are running with that motor. Any more specs or any numbers as far as power/tq? I could be sending you in the wrong direction, but from what I have read, I don't think I am.

    Lightening the torque

I am redoing my 84 Monte Carlo stock car and have been told that I can lighten up my torque converter but was never shown how. Has anyone done this and what should I be looking for?

You can't do it yourself. This has to be done with someone with special machinery. Determine what you're going to do with your car, including cam, compression, carbureation exhaust, gearing, etc., then call someone like B&M or TCI for a recommendation.

My old man tells people that any stall over 3000 rpm is too much for the street. Once you get there and past, the converter is slippling too much and will cause rapid heating.

you sure they didn't say "loosen up" the conv. they can take your conv. and cut it open and make it stall at any rpm you want. Never heard it called lighten up though. I guess it would be lighter.
