    ACME J Rods

This day is never gonna end! I bought $140.00 worth of parts last night, Lifters, Gaskets, Chrome Valve Covers and Air Cleaner. Finished installing new valves and rocker arm on my freshly painted heads and I'm ready to put this thing back together. I think this clock is slooowww.

Update: started putting it back together after a trip to the Auto parts store. Had to order the Carb Spacer and what I think was a Heat Sensor that screwed into the side of the Head? Anyway that took way to long as the parts didnt pull up in the computer and had to be looked up in a book.

Got home and took the old lifters out and inserted the new ones after coating in oil? Is that the correct way to install these?

Wiped everyting down again with degreaser and laid the Head Gaskets down. Got the first Head back on no problem, caught the 2nd and buggered up the gasket. Another trip to the Auto parts store and $18.00 later for another gasket I got the 2nd Head on. Did not tork them down as I forgot to pick up thread sealer.

Tightened up the two new exhaust manifold studs and repainted with high heat paint to touch them up.

Buy this time it was start'n to get dark so I cleaned up and headed off to bed. Couldnt get to sleep as I was going over everything in my head and I remembered I didnt see a Valve Seal on the bent valve I replaced and didnt put one on the new one? Do I need to pull the valve again to put the valve seal on if there wasnt one on the old one? or was there one and it had broken off?

    No but I will.

Ya gotta take the spring(s) off and put the oil seal on the valve(s) or the oil will travel down the guide and smoke/burn in the cylinder..[/B]
Ok I will pull it back off and put in the oil seal.

You DID grind the seat and lap in the new valve didn't cha??

No I just cleaned it up with a wire wheel and installed it?
    Is this a must do?

    Thanks

    Thumbs up

Thought I would give ya guy's an update... Had to take my Accel plug wires back as they were to long after work on Friday. I bought the Accel because they came in yellow which I thought would look good on the motor. You would have thought the distributor was in the back seat these wires were so long?

Saturday rolls around I get up and my wife informs me that I better not open the hood on that car until I fix the leak'n toilet, fix the drain pipe on the air conditioner, pickup my kids instrument for band and sign him up for football.

I get after it and power out on the honey do's. Now I can work on the car and get the new plug wires on and notice I didnt tight'n up the alternator belt. Get that done and go inside for a quick washup before tryin to start her up. Ask the wife if she thinks it will start and without hesitating she says "NO" Ill tell ya what I get no respect. I turn around and the dog's look'n at me for sum attention and I say what about you... think it's gonna start? Wife say's wag your tail if you think it will start? The dog looks at me and I kid ya not, stopped wagg'n its tail and sat down Dang! No body's got any confidence in me

Well there's no turn'n back now and I head off to see what happens Put the key in and turn her over while pump'n the gas a few times and she fires off! Idles a little rough and then I hit the pedal and the engine starts racing. I shut it off happy that it started and knew right away I didnt hook up the throttle springs on the carb correctly. No big deal, I fix it and start her up again. Runs a little rough but runs none the less it runs HAH! All I have to do now is adjust the rocker arms and she should run just fine

Sorry to be so windy but I was happy with myself and wanted to share.

Thanks Streets, just need to get the rocker arms adjusted. Found a thread on this a week or so ago and took the old valve cover and cut the top out. Tried to adjust them last night but was having trouble keeping the motor running long enough to make the adjustments. Had a neighbor come over and he laid on the gas which was spray'n oil all over my freshly painted motor wasn't real happy but what do you expect for free help I ended up giving up and going over to my other neighbors who just picked up a new Late Model dirt track car. I been help'n him pull the motor out of his old one and putt it in this one. I think Ill wait until he can come over and gemme a hand with my Rockers. Should have his car done by Friday so he can race this weekend. Maybe get him over next week to give me a hand.

The problem is keep'n it at a low idle. Car wants to die and when you rev it up and let it settle back down it wants to backfire through the carb and then die? Also started overheaten as I had antifreeze cummn out the overflow? Do you think this is all related to the rockers being to far out of adjustment?
