I once painted an engine and transmission with an air brush. There was no nook or cranny which wasn't perfect, but wow how long it took!

I've painted several 5.9 cummins engines and I usually use 2 cans of primer and 3 to 4 of paint depending how nice you want it. So you might be looking at 4 to 6 cans of paint?

I figured 3 to 4 cans of epoxy primer and the same for the top coat. The VHT prices are from $10 to $13 per can.
So, I think I'll do it right and buy a gun.

After more research, I may try this company for the paint and maybe,.....their 3 gun kit. I don't need a expensive gun for painting the block, bell, tranny and small jobs around the house.

Or spend a little more for a better brand that I know from the,....old days.

I'll offer that you don't need the VHT paint for your engine & tranny. A good quality primer and compatible top coat will serve you well at half (or less) the cost of the VHT coatings. There're lots of engines painted with epoxy primer & base coat, clear coat or single stage running around. The difference is that rattle can paint is reduced more to flow through that tiny orifice, making it harder to control runs and sags.

I'm confused. Which do you mean, use a paint gun to shoot normal primer and top coat or use any lower cost rattle can brand ?

If you choose to use rattle cans, you do not need to pay for high temp coatings good for up to 2000F. You can buy Rustoleum Engine Paint for $4 a can and it will do just fine - https://www.zoro.com/rust-oleum-engi...oPhg&gclsrc=ds

Ok, I was thinking about it this morning, and I agree with you. If I were painting a turbo, it would be a different story.

I understand we're talking hobby here, and having fun where you can, but you've told us how tight money is, and you've made it clear that you're only going to be painting your engine, tranny, and bellhousing plus some small parts along the way. Does it really make sense to spend $160 on a gun, and then have to spend more $$$ to get your air supply OK with piping & filters, quick connects, and on, and on? Once that's all done you've now got to buy epoxy primer and single stage color, plus thinner, filters, and all of the associated "stuff" to do the job. I would be looking at rattle can colors to find something that I could live with. I'd bet that before you're done you'll invest $300 to $400 when you could get it done for $75 to $100. If you were doing a show car it would be different, but your path doesn't make sense to me, and with that I won't bother you further.

Roger, "bother you futher" take it easy. lol geez.....

I did not mention that today a guy finally,...paid me for a job I did for him, so I'm taking that money and paint the parts the right way.
A neighbor is a plumber and gave me some pipe and can get what ever else I need to plumb the garage. He said having just a small garage with one line, I don't need much. When I figure out which dyer I want he can get it, unless I choose one from a box store and buy it there. I'm not giving up on the rattle can completly yet, but I can buy a blue color paint that is very close match to mine. I can't with a rattle paint. So don't give up on me buddy, just trying to do it right,.... as much as I can anyway.

My local auto paint shop can mix whatever color you want and put it in a spray bomb, maybe a paint shop local to you can do the same? I'd ask around.
