Not sure why the link does not work for you - I click it and it opens the window in Wikipedia. Maybe cut & paste it in your browser? The article points out that Cadillac had their try in '81 but it caused them all kinds of warranty problems. Mitsubishi had a version a year later, and it fell out of use until Mercedes brought it out on a V-12 in the '90's, followed by Chrysler on the Hemi's in '04. With oil prices in '08 "...many manufacturers..." turned to variable displacement controls on their larger engines to bring their CAFE numbers down, and to offer more fuel efficiency.
