My Harley has the same setup. The fob has to be within 12 feet of the bike or it won't start. Since the packaging on a bike has to be small, it might be something to look into. I'm using a cylindrical bike ignition key for on, off, acc and a momentary (spring loaded) toggle for start on one of my cars.
