    starting solenoid ?

I have a chevy starting solenoid ,my question is there is the B-batt terminal and a S -terminal that is the remote /starting/ wire and we have the R terminal. Is the R terminal hot when the key is in run position or only when the key is in the start position? I want to power up the hei ,if its hot key on /key off power or should I just use the original positive power that went to the old coil from inside the cab?
