    Hilborn-Style Scoops

I was wondering if it is possible to put one of these on my 84 Chevy out the hood just for looks. If I put a new carb on the 84 then I will put a 2 inch riser, etc and thought it would looks sweet with this out the hood. I understand people with superchargers/blowers run these on their trucks or car but can this be possible on mine without one? I think with this truck I am going to run a Air Gap intake manifold which I think sits about a inch higher than the Performer series one I have now and then a 1 inch (maybe 2) spacer will raise the carb. I don't know, maybe I am being stupid and missing something here but I thought it would be something for looks and with the air filter in it or however these things are set up...
    Any oppinions or info here?
    Thanks!

it all depends on the base you use you can get the short ones or the longer ones. one carb or 2 or blower or injection mounted i like running the dual 4's >long style> one on a single carb just looks better then the <single carb> midgit one. check jegs or summit......scooter. heck i had a hillborn style one on my 79 malibu wagon with a stock 305 with a 142 mini blower on it was for fun BUT IT STILL HAS TO BOLT TO THE CARB!stick your hand up the back and tighten the nut down yes its 5:14 am yes i just got off work yes im tired and heck yes i am rambling

Gasser thanks for the info. I am bit confused on what you said though. I know the single one is small and I would rather have the bigger one so if I get a dual what do I do, just hook up the one carb on it and block the other off? Also do these ones have the air filter inside or what? I dont have a blower or nothing but I will get spacers, etc to make it stick out of the hood a little and though maybe it would be good if there IS a filter in it and that way more air too. I will be putting on an edelbrock carb (not sure what size yet). I am now getting the truck today and picking it up in about 4 hours and found out too that it's NOT a 84, it's an 85 Custom Deluxe. I read the door and it said 12/84 and I didn't think about it but the title says 85 and my father said that it could be made in december of 84 but it's a 85. Either way I can't wait to get it home strip the ugly stuff off it and then this week get those dropped springs on it then I have and go to the alignment shop later. I need new tires on it bad so that will happen next week as well and THEN the alignment.
But yeah, I am pretty excited. Not really a old truck I guess you can say but I like the fact I have NO rust to deal with on this one and I can focus JUST on the paint, interior and motor, not having to cut out metal, weld panels, sand blast, primer, paint, etc.
But yeah anymore info on this scoop is appreciated because I need to get this new carb, intake manifold and filter soon since the truck is all gummed up, hard to start and leaking a bit.

Try googling "Mr. Roadster". They used to make a line of Hilborn-style scoops with the air cleaner built in.

no if you flip it over <the dual 4's one> there are these tabs and the bases screw to them you can take off one base and center it and bolt it in to one carb

Oh ok I see. Now what do I do about a air filter then? Also rain and water getting in there, will that be a problem or do they make covers for them to run in the rain? I hope I'm not just dreaming here or getting over my head but I really think this would be sweet to do.

A forward facing scoop of any kind on a rainy day is not going to work real well. The water is going to get in the engine and also turn the air cleaner to junk. The set up looks neat, but not a real good deal for a daily driver that will be subject to seeing a rainstorm or two. JMO

Yeah well maybe I should just save this for my 48 then since that wont be driven on rainy days. I thought it would be a cool idea and always wondered if it can be in the rain with that. But yeah maybe I should hold off on that? Glad I asked first.
    Thanks guys!

    Shawn............

As for the air cleaner question, there is one per carb inside the housing PLUS a peice of foam sandwiched between two peices of chrome grating ( don't know what else to call it ) that holds the foam in place,

I tried running with the foam and no air cleaner, and then air cleaner and no foam, then both, no difference to me.

I clean the foam if / when it gets dirty ( once so far )and the air cleaners still look new, about 7k on this set up.

Been caught in the rain a few times and it ran the same, but of corse that was not WOT.

Heres the best pic I have showing the foam / grating at the front.

Viking that thing looks good. Yeah I dont know, this thing will be in the rain a lot since it rains a lot here. I may put that on the 48 though. I do need to get a air filter this week for this truck though. The stock one is VERY dirty. Any idea's for a good one?
