    Look on the passenger side of the block, just above the starter. You should find a code there, four digits followed by a space, then four more. You'll look at the first two digits of the first group of four, an Alpha followed by a number. A "C" is the '60's, "D" is the '70's, "E" is the '80's and "F" is the '90's. If you find "D4" your engine was built in 1974, or an "E9" is 1989. I would expect crate engines to follow the same format, but I'm not 100% on that.
