Does '37 Buick vacuum wiper motor reverse?
I want to change the vacuum wiper motor on my 37 Buick to an electric motor?
My engine is not running so I cannot check function of the original vacuum motor.
1) Does the vacuum motor reverse direction?
2) Does the electric replacement made by Newport Engineering also reverse direction?
Thanks

Sorry that I can't answer those questions but, you could pickup a length of vacuum hose and run it from your daily driver to the 37...
I've even tested one using the shop vac with a short length of hose and duct taped the vacuum hose to the vac's nozzle. crude but it worked!

Does your motor resemble this?

If yes, there's a "flap" in the body that gets pulled from one extreme to the other, nearly contacting the top on each side of the motor. The shaft turns CCW ~180 degrees, then CW ~180 degrees, so in a way it "reverses".Roger

The Newport units work great, used them on my last two GM rides.

rspears,
Yes it does look like that picture.
Also figured out that since it has a double sided arm off the motor, it must reverse.
The newport motor also has a double sided arm so it must also reverse.
Would someone mind sending have a picture of a Newport installed, or of the install instructions so I can be sure if I have room for the unit with my AC?
Thanks

Mutt,
A quick "google" of "newport electric wiper motor" yielded a ton of information. Here's one on a '55Packard

; the Newport site says that the '37-38 Buick model clears the cowl vent and Heater/AC - https://www.newportwipers.com/options.php ; and says that it bolts to the OEM mounting brackets. Sounds pretty easy - just send them money!!Roger

The original vacuum motor is only 2.25" tall. It fits next to the cowl vent and does not extend below the vent. From what I can tell the Newport unit will be mounted to the same brackets, but is flipped over and extends below the cowl vent a few inches.
This would shift my AC down a few inches which is significant since the dash is only 8 inches high. If I'm right, then I'll probably design a motor off to the side and drive an added linkage.
Thanks

I'd order the Newport motor and see how it all fits. In my experience shifting the motor to the side and adding linkage sounds simple but ends up being a lot harder and adds failure points or slop to the linkage, compromising the operation. Add that Newport could question their warranty coverage for a non-standard installation. Just sayin'....Roger

The Newport motor is reverseable, you can mount it to the left or right, whichever fits better. One position, I don't recall which, tucks it right up against the cowl. I have installed a bunch of them, and never had a problem.Anyone can restore an old car, it takes a man to cut one up

Good to have her home finally, still need to go back and give her another polish after messing with the engine stuff. Made it up to Idaho. Also a local show.
