My folks were from Texas, one from Fort Worth and the other from up by Littlefield in the panhandle area, and we always had blackeyed peas on New Years Day - no cabbage though. Mom would start a pot of dried peas in the morning and let them simmer all day with a ham hock, and it was cornbread & peas for dinner. Good stuff, but we have not maintained the tradition.
