The short answer is resource contention. Your PC sends out a request and the server(s) (where CHR resides) is/are not able to respond within the timing parameters determined by your PC. Now you can increase those timing parameters, but I wouldn’t.

There are multiple variables that can impact this – most of which you cannot control as once a requests leaves your PC you really have no control on the route that the message takes to get to the server. Most often, the routers that control the flow across the Internet use an algorithm derived from a process called OSPS (Open Shortest Path First) to establish a “path” between your PC and the resource you are accessing. This path remains “intact” as long as you have an active session and there is no traffic that is prioritized higher than you on the Internet that needs to acquire bandwidth. Pretty fantastic really, to think our NZ friends enjoy the same response time as those of us in the States when accessing CHR.

The major difference between CHR and the really big “Server Farms” is size and number of big pipes that touch the Internet – thus allowing multiple, simultaneous paths to be established and greatly reducing the likelihood of timing out. Send CHR a bunch-o-money and we too can have the big fast pipes!

It’s also possible that the actual server is down, but such shouldn’t be occurring too often as it is monitored and in most instances will automatically failover or worst case, reboot…

Yep Glenn, that was exactly the explanation I was going to give! Sounds like you understand these darned computers.

Glenn, your analysis is far more elegant, and likely way more accurate than mine. I was just thinkin', look out boys, she's 'bout ta go titsup!
