The good news is; it's running and sounds great. The bad news; it's pumping oil out the rear main seal like crazy. I bought a Fel-Pro gasket kit from Summit and the seal that came with it did not look like the original one. I think the original was a rope seal and the replacement was a mechanical seal. I called Summit, they said it was right and checked with Fel-Pro and they insisted it was the retrofit seal. I went ahead and put it in even though it seemed like it was a little small in the groove. Im really aggrevated about this. So now I guess the motor comes back out.

Well, still a productive day! She runs and sounds good is always a good feeling.. sucks 'bout the oil seal tho.. Are you going to pull the motor because you cannot drop the pan because it will hit the chassis? Do you know of any parts houses in your area that sells something besides Fel-Pro? That's all that is available in my area, we used to have a different company around here called Detroit Gasket. I used them a few times and they worked ok...

We use rope packing at work for pump stuffing boxes. If you get stuck, PM me and I can get most any width.

Bad news on the bad seal, Falcon! Just one of the bad deals about having to put up with someone on a phone bank vs. talking with a tech who's actually doing this stuff everyday! Keep us updated, here's hoping you can get the correct seal without a whole lot of hassle!!!!!

I could get the pan off with the motor in the car but they had told me to put RTV on the back of the seal so I dont think I'll be able to roll it out from under the crank. I might have to pull the crank back out but Im hoping that's not the case. Still, it might be worth a shot to just pull the pan and try it. Pan has to come off either way.

falcon extra work is all and we know we don't like to do it if we don't have to . We i talked to Russ Martin in Cali about the nailhead he said one gasket it set from a manufacturer was the right one . Well got lucky and that is the one that came with the engine .

I use rtv a lot with some of the gaskets when in assembly , I also have some aircraft gasket sealant that is top notch Never have a leak but you will not save that gasket if it has to come off .

I can honestly say I've neve heard of anyone requesting RTV for a main seal! I'm not saying it isn't done nor it was or wasn't recommended.. I just haven't heard that one yet. The rear seal on my FE390 fit loose. It filled the void but wasn't snug like I would've preferred. I did put a dab of RTV on the seal end.. "just because" it made me feel better!

I think you could drop the pan and remove the seal with the motor in place.. depends on how much RTV was used to "glue" it in.. I'll cross my fingers and eat some ice cream for you!

Dont feel bad; I dont fit under the car very well these days, either. I gained 12 pounds on that cruise this summer and still havent been able to get them off.

I just didnt feel like pulling that pan yesterday so I worked on other stuff. I got the grill and bumper back together and mounted my fuel and volt gauges. I had several 3/8" holes in the floor from the three differnt seats I had mounted when this floor was in the other car so I welded them up, hit all the edges with seam sealer, and gave it a final coat of paint. Finally I put it up on jack stands to pull the pan today. Back to work tomorrow; bummer.

I got the old seal out; pretty easy, actually. I had the pan off and seal out in less than an hour. I cant see a thing wrong other than I think putting RTV on the back of the seal was bogus advice. There's little lumps of it stuck to the seal; that may have been causing the issue. Im going to put a new one back in the groove clean and see what happens.

And good news on getting the pan/seal out/off! I'm really curious what the next one is like. The fit and your confidence level in it is what I'm waiting for.

And, no-one can acuse me of being an old Mopar fan but I'm really enjoying your build! I really like the way the dash has come together! It should be a good looking ride with some muscle!

Cool, thanks! Im glad you guys are digging the old four door.
I bought a seal from Mopar Performance and this one fit much better. It's back together, running great, and no leaks! I also got my brackets made to mount the front brake calipers. Those water jet machines sure do some slick cutting.
