    302 ideas

Ok, I have a few different options for my 302. I am sure now that I want to run some better heads. I could go with the heads kurts buddy has or buy a different set. I was looking at the world products windsor jr. 180s. They have 58cc combustion chambers, 180cc intake and 1.94/1.60 valves. And they are pretty budget friendly at 409.99 each.
I just need to know if they will be ok for a daily driver. I am concerned with the compression ratio (pump gas). Should I run dished or flat top pistons? and what cam would work well with either choice? I would like to run my stock converter, but would consider a cheap stal. Here is an idea I have.

flat top hyperutectics and stock bottom end
    windsor jr. 180s
magnum comp cam adv. dur 280 .512lift rpm range 2000-6000
    1.6 ratio roller rockers
    performer rpm intake
holley street avenger 670 vac sec
long tube 1 5/8 long tubes
    2 1/4 dual exhuast

Please, make some suggestions. I would rather this get picked to death than build it and have an explosion you gotta love how this list gets more expensive every time I type it

    My suggestion

I think this would be a better combination for several reasons,SBF's by design will run stronger with more exhaust duration than intake and since you will be using this as a daily strong low end and mid-range is important. This cam is a little less pricewise than the Comp so the difference in the heads will equal out. This cam will let you run the 351W and HO firing order also which is a side benefit.Click on : www.summitracing.com and put these part numbers in search: M-6049-X306 (heads) and HRS-220051(cam) The rest of your combo would work very well with this.

What ever you do Run a windage tray in the bottom end.
It keeps the Oil from slapping the crank and slowing it down under hard acceleration.

Thank you both for your input. Thats weird, the 351 has a different firing order? And do you think I could possibly get away with a 625 road demon jr?

I've installed that carb on a very mild cammed 302 with headers, works great!!! Customer was very pleased with it.... I usually run just the plain old Holley 600, but the 625 Demon IMO would be a good choice for your engine, too.

you would be better off with a 600 edelbrock carb.you would get better gas milage and better low and mid range trottle responce. i have a summitt carb (copy of a ford 4100) on my 289 r-1 studebaker v-8(its a studebaker not a ford,) i like it a lot good gas milage and great throttle responce. and autolite 4100 is also a good carb.

I used to run a 302 with the edelbrock rpm performer ally heads which i port matched to the same intake coupled with a edelbrock 600 carb and rpm performer cam it was an excellent package which gave outstanding mpg.
I've not had good experiences with Barry Grant carbs to be honest, I had one that had swarf in it and other similair experiences.

I must admit, as a degreed ME of 33+ years I had never seen the term "swarf" but it readily comes up in Wikipedia and on-line definitions. I have swarf all over the barn floor and workbench from grinding a pair of calipers!!

We in the U.K. refer to that as grinding dust Swarf is usually stuff that comes from machines such as drilling, milling & turning. It looks like long cork screw springs.

And one more thing, If I were to run the comp cam with 268 adv duration, should I run dished pistons? what compression ration would a zero decked 302 get with flat tops and 58cc chambers? And could I run these heads out of the box, or get them worked a little? Ive read that they need a couple things cleaned up. Thanks

I would run flat tops but the deciding factore is what block you have there.
I would stay at 10:1 compression, thats plenty for the Street.
Look over the starter for the numbers, then tell us what they are.
I personally don't like the dished, but thats just me. Kurt
