    When you machine a piece of metal what comes off is swarf what do you guys call it ???

    I must admit, as a degreed ME of 33+ years I had never seen the term "swarf" but it readily comes up in Wikipedia and on-line definitions. I have swarf all over the barn floor and workbench from grinding a pair of calipers!!

    We in the U.K. refer to that as grinding dust Swarf is usually stuff that comes from machines such as drilling, milling & turning. It looks like long cork screw springs.
