    yep the guid plate stop some of the side to side movement of the roller tip on the rocke arm as well as the tracking of the rocker a cross the valve stem .you can have alot of side to side movement if you have the wrong size push rod for guid plates like 5/16 push rods with guid plates made for 3/8 push rods
